In dei nomine amen The viijth
daie of the moneth of february in the iijth year of
the Reigne of our Soueraigne lorde kinge Edwarde the Sixte by
the grace of god kinge of Englande ffraunn [France] and Irelande
defender of the faithe / and in earthe of the churche
of England and Irelande the supreme hedd / And in the yere of
our lorde god a Thousande fyve hundreth fourtie and Nyne / I
Edmonde Walsingham knight being hole of mynde and in good
memory thanks be to Almightie god do make ordeyne and declare
this my testament and Last will in manor and forme
folowing / ffirst I bequeathe and comende my soule vnto
Almightie god my Creator Redemer and maker of the
worlde / And my bodye to be buried in the pshe [parish] churche
of Cheselhurste in the Countie of Kente / or els where yt shall
please Almightie god / But if god send for me [within] Twentie
myles of the said pshe then to lye in the Tombe within the
Chappell there Where my self haue vsually siten / And also I
giue and bequeathe to the pishe churche of Cheselhurste aforsaid
if my bodye be there buried fourtie shillings / Also I will that
my sonne Thomas and his heires and all other heyres after
hym and his heires, whiche shall happen to be owners of my
Mannor House and Landes in Cheselhurst aforesaid shall bestowe
yerely forever xijs. to be distributed and deuyded [divided] in
forme folowing. in the lent season yerely that ys to say to
xxijs. of the poreste [poorest] folkes being householders within
the said pishes of Cheselhurste ffosescraye and poles Craye to
[every] house vjs. viz. ijs. in brede ijs. in redde
hering and ijs. in white hering yerely in the Lent / To be
Distributed by myn Executours and ouseers [overseers] / And I
will that my Executours and Overseers shall Imploy and bestowe
vppon bridges and highwayes most vsede [used] and that shall
haue most nede to be mended wtin the pisshe of
Cheselhurst fourtie shillings / Also I giue and bequeathe to one
William my kynnesman nowe in the custodie and keping
of John Sutton my lease for terme of yeres yet to come of Tytyng
[tithing] besides Gyleforde in Surrey the lease of Standground
in the Countie of Huntyngton. with all my right tytle and
interest from the same / Also I giue and bequeathe to the same
William my Annuyte [annuity] or Anniall [annual] rent of Seven
poundes with all my interest right and title in the same the
whiche was yerely paide vnto me by Walter Cromwell alias
Willyams / and nowe paid by th’executoures of Sr
Richarde Cromwell knight / oute of the Howse and cyte [city?] of
the late Monnastorie [monastery?] of Thorne and other Landes
belonging to the said Late Monnestery / As more large may appere
by apayre [a pair] of Indentures together with a grannte of the
same Annutie made by the said Walter Cromwell / Also I giue and
bequeathe to the said Willm certeyn Landes
the whiche I bought in Wales of Morgyn ap precard lying and
being / in the lordshippe of Beell with all the hole stock of
mares and coltes theron / To haue to hym and to his heyres of
his bodye Lawfully begotten / And for default of suche yssue the
same Landes in Wales to remayn to the right heyres of me foreuer
/ Also I will that Thoms Saunders my sonne in Lawe his
Executours and assignes shall yerely from yere to yere receave
pceve [?] & take vpp all the profytts and revenues of the said
loanes of Standgrounde tytyng to gether wt the saide
Annuitie / and also the hole yerely rents and proffytts of all
the saide lands and stocke in Wales with all other suche Leasses
as I haue within the Realme of Englande not hereafter willed
given by this my Last will and testament / And all the same
rents proffytts and revenues to Imploy and put in stock to his
most profytte and advantage towards his fynding vntill the said
William comyth to the Age of xxi yeres / Then I
will myne Executours and Overseers as my trust is in them to see
all the said stock and profytts of the premisses ouer and
besides his Scoling [schooling] and fynding / Delyuered to the
said William According to the trewe [true]
meaning of this my last will and testament / And ferder
[further] I will and myn expresse mynde and intente ys that
Thomas Saunders my sonne in Lawe shall haue the order rule
educacion correction & govnement of the said
William Vntill he shall accomplishe the
full yeres of xxj. taking necessary allowance for his Scowling
[schooling] learnyng Reayment [raiment] meate and drynk and
other necessaries / And if it shall fortune the said
William to dye before that he shall come
to the full age of xxi yeres or at any tyme after having then no
child of his bodye Lawfully begotten or lyve Then I will that
the said leases of Standgrounde tyting and the yeres of the same
/ And the said yerely Annuitie or Annuall rente of vij? for to
gether with the hole stocke and profytts of all other Leases
then receaved to the use of the said William
shall fully and holye [wholly] Remayne and be delyvered vnto
Thomas Walsingham and Walsingham Saunder yonger sonne to
Thoms Saunder my sonne in Lawe / Also I giue to Thomas
Combes Richarde Badgeroste / Humfrey Badgeroste my sonne
Morgayne my brother Ayloff and Anthony Ashely to euery of them
one suche of my garnaments [garments?] as myn Executours and
Overseers shall think most meate [meet] for them Also I will
that dame Anne my welbeloued wyfe shall haue the moyte
[moiety] and half of my houshold stuf within my house at ?? (??
vesselles tobbes [tubs] vates [vats] troives [?] barrettes great
standerds and one garnyshe of pewter vessell there onely
excepted and refues to Thomas Walsingham my sonne) All whiche
said moite and one half of houshold stufe before rehersed and
appoynted to the said Dame Anne / I wold shulde egally [equally]
be deuyded [divided] by the indeferent [indifferent]
discreacions of [Sir Thomas] Barnerston: Thomas Saunders
and two other of the said Dame Annes frendes / and after whiche
devision [division] so made except before excepted / I will that
Thomas Walsingham my sonne remove & voyd from thense [the use?]
all the other pte of napery Linyng [linens] and peater [pewter?]
/ at all tymes at his pleasure And I will forder [further] that
the same Thomas my sonne pmytt [permit] and suffer all the
residue of his parte of housholde stuf aforesaid to remayne and
be in the said house of yokes / thertobe resonabley vsed and
occupied by the said Lady Anne during her lyf naturall without
wasting distructyng and spoylyng of the same / all whiche parte
and portion of houshold stuf before appoynted to the said Thomas
Lynnyng Naperey and peater vessell (only excepted / I will shall
be delyuered to the said Lady Anne by Inventorie indentyd
betwene the said Thomas and her / in advoyding of all manner of
contencion / And if it happen the said Thomas Walsingham to dye
withoute Issue of his bodye Lawfullye begotten / Then I will and
my full mynde ys that all my goodes and Cattalles remayning at
Scadbery be egally devided betwene my daughters my brother
Aylyffe children & the said William /
Item I will that the same dame Anne Gray my wyfe shall haue all
suche goodes Juylles [jewels] and plate as she brought vnto me
fully and holly / and all suche houshold // stuf of hers as she
brought remayning at the black ffryers or ells where / and all
other stuf of myn that she brought not remaynyng at the black
ffriers at the tyme / all the bay salte [?] nowe there being and
all myne Apperell only excepted / And yf it happen me to dye
after our Lady daye next comyng / or after Mighelmas [Michaelmas]
daye next / then my vxy [?] will and mynde ys that the said Dame
Anne shall receave ffourtie poundes of M~ Drewre as of my free
gift wtoute comptrolment of myne Executours / over
and beside Sixe siluer Trenchors. wh all suche
Chaynes Juylles [jewels] and Rynges whiche she hath of myne (my
greate chayne the chayne of the Trinitie and my fflagyn chayne
only excepted and alwayes reserved to my sonne Thomas All whiche
said Juyles Tranchars and Ryngs (except before excepted / I do
absolutely give to the said Lady Anne / Myche trusting to her
gentell remembrance towards my Children as they shall shewe
cause to her / Item I will and give to the said Dame Anne all
her leases of her lodging and gardyns of the black ffriers at
London in as Large and ample manner as she hold them before
mariage with me / any clause mater article or centence within
this my Last will and testament to the contrary not wtstanding
/ And further I will and give to Thomas Walsingham my sonne all
my lease and terme of poles Cray whiche I holde of Sr
Chrofer [Christopher] Danby knight being dede / And my lease
also of Darteford in Kent I giue vnto the said Thomas Walsingham
/ And if it fortune my said sonne Thomas to dye withoute yssue
male of his bodie Lawfully begotten / Then I will all my Landes
in Cheselhurste poles Cray Sainte Marycray ffosescray and
bromley shall remayne to ffrannces Walsingham my brothers sonne
and to the heyres males of his bodye Lawfully begotten / And for
default of suche Issue male of the bodye of the said ffrannces I
will that all the said landes and tents [tenements] shall
remayne to the right heyres of me the foresaid Sr
Edmonde [forever] / And I will and give to my sonne Morgayne
all my lease and interest of Marterhill in the Countie of Surrey
wt thendentors [the indentures] of the
said Lease / And also my full mynde intent and will ys that all
my Sernntes [servants] shall haue meate drynk and Lodging in my
Mannor House at Cheselhurste / one quarter of ayere [a year]
next after my decease / yf they will so longe tak yt so that
they do from tyme to tyme delygently [diligently] their
[service] and attendannce vnto the said Dame Anne and to my
sonne Walsingham and the rest of my Overseers when they come
thether / And I will and give to euery one of my [servants]
whiche haue ben wt me aboue one yere half ayeres
wages / And some them to haue a quarters wages or lesse by the
appoyntment and discretion of myn Overseers / And what order [soever]
myn overseers shall take therin / I will my sonne Walsingham
shall pforme [perform] the same accordingly / And I will and
give vnto Bakrs wydowe all the money she doth owe me because she
ys very power [poor] / And to Humfrey Bagecrofte I give also all
the money he doth owe vnto me And vnto John Coke myn olde
[servant] I give yerely during his lyf ffyve poundes vjs vijd to
be paid to hym quarterly by even porcions by my sonne Walsingham
by ye discreacions of my overseers / And vnto Gellybromle my
[servant] for his honest service above his wages of half ayere.
I giue vj[£] xijs iijd / And vnto my lady my wyfe I giue foure
horses and one olde gelding / And to Margaret Corkrell her
mayden whiche never toke wages I giue ffyve pounds And to
ffraunnces Hall an other of her maydens I guie fourtie shillings
/ And to George Horskeys [?[ I giue a bay stoned nagge and
twentie shillings in money wt aquarter of barley /
And to Robert Scot twentie shillings in money / and half a
quarter of barley / And to euery of my daughters a syluer potte
their names wrytten in them / And to Greysell Watton [servant]
to yong myster Peckham I giue Tenne poundes whiche I would
shulde be delyuered to her / and ymployed by her frendes towards
[the advancement] of mariage / Item to Gouldfrode my [servant] I
guie xxs And the Residue of all my goodes Moveables and
vnmoveables not specially bequeathed nor Lymited within this my
present Testament / as cons??yng my last will my funeralles and
buryalles fynished / my debtes paide my legacies fulfilled
Accordingly / I will that they shall remayne to my saide sonne
Thomas Walsingham Whome I make ordeyne and constitute my sole

concernyng my last wyll / and that he fully accomplishe euery
thinge herein coteyned [contained] according to his bondon
[bounden] dewtie / And the trust I haue put in hym and the trewe
meanyng therof wt the advyse of my said welbeloued
wyfe my sonne in Lawe Thomas Saunder and my sonne in Lawe
Sir Thomas Barnerdyston knyght Whome I make constitute and
ordeyne my supervisours and [overseers] of this my testament
concernyng my last will / And I will that my said sonne
Thomas Saunder shall haue for his paynes taking my black
satten gowne furred wt marteryns / And my sonne Sr
Thoms Barnerdystone for his paynes taking / my gowne of M?rry
veluet ffurred with Sables / And yf any ambyguite dowte or
question happen to growe or ryse vpon any clause worde centence
or matter conteyned wtin this my last will and
testament / Then my full mynde and intent ys that the same
beconstrewyd [be construed] exponded [expounded] and declared by
the said Thomas Saunders and suche as he shall call to
counsell for the same in advoyding all contention expenth and
stryffe that might els arise the vppon [thereupon] / In witnes
whereof to this my present Last will and testament I haue
subscribed my name with myne owne hand and put to my seale the
daye and yere first aboue writen. Revoking and renounsing all
other willes and testaments heretofore at any tyme by me the
said Edmonde made spoken written or declared [per?] me Edmnde
