The Will of John Usher
In the Name of God Amen I John Usher Quartermaster and
Mariner of the Ship Good Hope of and from Calcutta to London being of sound
and disposing mind but weakly in body and ever mindful of Eternity do make
this my last Will and Testament Vizt I give also bequeath my soul to God
from whom it came and my body to be disposed of in Christian burial
according to the usage and custom observed at Sea on such occasions As to my
earthly property whether real or personal consisting of wages which are or
may be due to me at the time of my decease clothes trinkets money etc etc
All and every thing sundry and particular I give and bequeath to my dearly
beloved half brother Matthew Duncan of Greenock N. 23 his children or heirs
as the case may be should he not be in existence at the time of carrying
into effect this my Will and Testament And moreover for the due performance
and carrying into effect this my said Will and Testament I do hereby
nominate and appoint Hugh Mc Dougall Captain’s Steward of the aforesaid Good
Ship Hope to be my executor for causing these my last wishes to be duly and
honestly performed according to the instructions herein and otherwise given
to him. In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my hand this twelvth day
of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty
