The Will of Valentine Stevens
In the name of God Amen I Valentine Stevens of the Parish of Great Rowlright in the County of Oxford Stone Mason being of parfect sound mind memory and understanding blessed be God do this day make publish ordain and appoint this my last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows which is to say first I will that all my just and lawful debts and burial expences be paid and discharged by my Executors hereinafter named Then I give and bequeath unto my nephew Robert Stevens of Rowlright All my wearing apparel Also I give and devise unto my said Nephew Robert Stevens for and during his natural life all that my Messuage or Tenement in which I and my said Nephew Robert Stevens now dwell situate standing and being in the Parish of Great Rowlright aforesaid he the said Robert Stevens keeping all that my said Messuage or Tenement with All and every the Appurtenances thereunto in good and tenantable repair during his natural life And from And after his decease I give and devise All the said Messuage or Tenement And Premises above mentioned unto my kinsman Robert Stevens the Younger Son of the said Robert Stevens Above mentioned but if it shall so happen that the said Robert Stevens the Younger shall dye without child or children lawfully begotten then and in such case I give and devise All the said Messuage or Tenement And Premises above mentioned unto my kinswoman Sarah Stevens Daughter of the said Robert Stevens the elder and sister to the said Robert Stevens the Younger and to her heirs and Assigns for ever Also I give and bequeath unto my said kinswoman Sarah Stevens a living in the above mentioned Messuage so long as she shall remain single and unmarried Also I give and bequeath unto my said kinswoman Sarah Stevens the sum of ten pounds of lawful money of Great Britain Likewise I give and bequeath unto my kinsman Robert Stevens the sum of ten pounds of like lawful money I give and bequeath unto my kinswoman Martha Stevens of Brackley and Grandaughter of my Brother John Stevens the sum of ten pounds of like lawful money I give and bequeath unto my Nephew Timothy West the sum of thirty pounds of like lawful money I give and bequeath unto my Nephew William West the sum of thirty pounds of like lawful money Also I give and bequeath unto my Niece Ann Busby the sum of thirty pounds of like lawful money I give and bequeath unto my kinswoman Elizabeth Richardson Daughter of my said Nephew Timothy West the sum of five pounds of like lawful money
I give and bequeath unto my kinswoman Elizabeth
West Daughter of my said Nephew William West the sum of five pounds of
like lawful money I give and bequeath unto John Dixton of Churrington
son of my Niece Mary Dixton the like sum of five pounds of like lawful
money I give and bequeath unto my Niece Ann Haynes my bed and bedstead
then I give and bequeath unto my two nephews namely Timothy and William
West both of the Parish of Swerford or their executors or Administrators
the sum of Eighty Pounds which said money is now out upon an indenture
of mortgage of a Messuage or Tenement And Premises At Hooknorton in the
County of Oxford belonging to one Richard Haynes which said Money I give
unto the said Timothy West and William West upon trust for such uses
intents and purposes hereinafter mentioned (that is to say) that they
the said Timothy West and William West or their executors or
Administrators shall lett the said money out to interest upon Good
Security Or shall lett the same remain where it is in trust that they
shall take and receive the interest arising and ....pay the same Yearly
unto my Kinswoman Ann Haynes Wife of the aforesaid Richard Haynes if she
shall desire the same Nevertheless I give and bequeath unto my said
Kinswoman Ann Haynes free liberty and full power to dispose of the above
mentioned eighty pounds at her decease in such a way and manner as she
shall think proper And my will and desire Also is that if it shall so
happen that that there shall be any of the money which shall have been
lost so that the same cannot be recovered by my Executors hereinafter
named or otherwise fall short so that there shall not be enough to
discharge my funeral expences and legacies herein above mentioned then
and in such case my Will and desire is that such defishanceys shall be
made up out of the legacies hereinbefore bequeathed unto the said
Timothy West and William West and Ann Busby And that they shall bear an
equal Share in Case of any such loss or defishancey And I do hereby
charge my Executors hereinafter named with the payment of my just debts
legacies And burial expences out of my personal estate within twelve
calendar months after my decease And if it shall so happen that any of
my legatees above mentioned shall dye before he she or they shall have
received their legacy then my will is that the legacie of such legatee
so dying shall be equally divided between their children share and share
alike And for want of such child or children then to the Brothers and
Sisters of such legatee so dying And Lastly I do hereby constitute
Ordain and Appoint my said Nephews Timothy West and William West Joint
Executors of this my last Will and Testament In witness whereof I have
hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty forth day of January One
thousand eight hundred and three The mark X of Valentine Stevens
