of the Will of John Stemp dated
the 10th January 1670-71
In the name of God Amen the
tenth day of January in the
XXIIth yeare of the raigne of
oure sovaigne Lard Charles the
second by the grace Of God of
England Scotland France and
Ireland King defenderof the
faithe I John Stemp of
Ovingdeane in the County Of
Sussex Clerke being weake in
body but of sound & perfect
minde & disposing memory thanks
being therefore given to
Almighty God; doe make and
ordaine theis last will &
testament in Writing in manner
and for me following First I
give & bequesth my soule into
the hands of Almighty God my
Creator wth an assured hope of
salvation through the merette &
passion of Jesus Christ my
blessed saviour and Redeemer &
my body I comitt to the earth to
bee decently buried neere my
loving wife in the Church of the
parish of Southover in the said
County at the discretion of my
Executor hereafter named Item I
give and bequeath unto my loving
sister in law Mary the wife of
Sir Robert Colbrand Baronett the
sume of Five pounds of lawful
money of England Item I give and
bequeath unto my sister in law
Frances Brinckley now the wife
of Brinckley merchant one Twenty
shilling piece in gold And to
his sister in law Marlta
Colbrand spinster a ten shilling
piece of Gold And to his sister
in lawe Jane Kerburne widow a
ten shilling piece of gold Item
I give & bequeath to the poor
people of the parish of
Southover aforesaid the sume of
Ten pounds of lawful money to
bee paid and distributed amongst
them at the discretion of my
overseer hereafter named All the
rest of my goodes chattels &
personal estate unbequeathed (my
debts legacies & funerall
expenses being first paid and
discharged) I give and bequeathe
unto my loving Nephew Thomas
Townsend of the Saboy in the
County of Midd r Esqre whome I
make sole Executor of this my
Will And as a touching &
disposing of that reall estate
wherewilt it halt pleased God to
bless mee I give & devise unto
my said loving Nephew Thomas
Townsend All that my Messuage or
Tenement out houses backsides
garden & orcharde thereunto
belonging commonly called the
Pond garden seituate lying and
being in Southover aforesaid To
have & To hold the Messuage
gardene premisses unto the said
Thomas Townsend for & during the
term of his natural life without
impendinmt of Wast And
imediately from & after his
decease Then I give and devise
the same premises unto the first
sonne of the body of thesaid
Thomas Townsend lawfully
begotten & to be begotten and to
the heires males of such first
begotten sonne lawfully to bee
begotten And for default of such
yssue I give & devise the same
premisse to every other sonne of
the body of the said Thomas
Townsend lawfully to be begotten
and to the heires males of his
or their bodyes lawfully coming
successively after the order a
course aforesaid that is to say
preferring each sonne as hee
shall bee in priority of birth &
the heires male of his body
before the other & heires males
of his body in witnes whereof I
have hereunto sett my hand and
seale the day and yeare above
