This is the Last Will and Testament of me
CHARLES SOWDEN of 98 Beldon Road of Great Horton in the City of
Bradford, Grocer and beerseller. I hereby revoke all wills and
testamentary depositions by me at any time heretofore made.
I appoint my wife ANN SOWDEN and my friend
JOHN HENRY KNOWLES of Liversedge in the County of York, butcher,
hereinafter called my Trustees, to be the Trustees and Executors of
this my Will.
I give all my household furniture and
household effects to my said wife absolutely.
I give and devise and bequeath all my real and
personal estate not hereby otherwise disposed of unto my trustees
upon trust that my trustees shall with the consent in writing of my
said wife during her life sell call in and convert into money the
same or such part thereof as shall not consist of money and shall
with and out of the moneys produced by such sale calling in and
conversion and with and out of my ready money pay my funeral and
testamentary expences and debts and my trustees shall at their
discretion invest the residue of the said moneys with power from
time to time at such discretion as aforesaid to vary such
investments And my trustees shall stand possessed of the said
residuary trust moneys and the investments .... to pay the income
thereof to my said wife during her life subject to the repair and
maintenance in good condition of all my real estate for the time
remaining unsold. From and after the decease of my said wife my
trustees shall stand possessed of the residuary trust funds
As to £40 part thereof In Trust for Mrs ANNIE
WHITHORN the daughter of my deceased brother SAMUEL SOWDEN
As to £30 other part thereof In trust for FRED
ROBINSON the son of my deceased sister Mrs HANNAH ROBINSON
As to £30 other part thereof In trust for Mrs
ROSE ANN HOLGATE the daughter of my deceased sister Mrs HANNAH
ROBINSON
As to £50 other part thereof In trust for
CHARLES ROBINSON the son of my said deceased sister Mrs HANNAH
ROBINSON on his attaining the age of 21 years.
My trustees shall stand possessed of the
remainder of the residuary trust funds As to one fifth part thereof
In trust for my sister MARY ANN LAMB the wife of WILLIAM LAMB
As to one other fifth part thereof In trust
for my sister ELLEN MOUNSEY the wife of TOM MOUNSEY
As to one other fifth part thereof for my
brother THOMAS SOWDEN
As to one other fifth part thereof In Trust
for my brother EDWARD SOWDEN
And as to the remaining one fifth part thereof
In trust for Mrs EMMA FLETCHER, Mrs SARAH ELLEN WOOD, Mrs CLARA
GREEN, Mrs MARTHA ANN JAGGER, SOWDEN BULMER, Mrs LINDA BATES, Miss
SARAH BULMER and JOHN BULMER, the eight children of my deceased
brother JOHN SOWDEN (including illegitimate children) on their
respectively attaining the age of 21 years in equal shares
If however any of the above named legatees
shall die in the lifetime of me or my said wife leaving a child or
children (whether legitimate or otherwise) who shall survive my said
wife and attain the age of 21 years then and in every such case the
last mentioned child or children shall take (and if more than one
equally between them) the legacy or share ... which his her or theri
parent would have taken ....
My trustees may raise any part or parts not
exceeding together one moiety of the expectant share of any infant
beneficiary under this my will and apply the same for his or her
advancement preferment or benefit as my trustees shall think fit.
My trustees may postpone the sale and
conversion of any part of my real and personal estate for so long as
they shall think fit and the rents profits and income to accrue from
and after my decease of an from such part of my estate as shall for
the time being remain unsold and unconverted shall after payment
thereout of all incidental expenses and outgoings be paid and
applied to the person or persons and in the manner to whom and in
which the income of the proceeds of such sale and conversion would
for the time being be payable or applicable under this my will if
such sale and conversion had been actually made.
My trustees shall be at liberty to let or
demise from year to year or for any term of years any real or
leasehold property remaining unsold ....
All moneys liable to be invested under this my
will may at the absolute discretion of my trustees be allowed to
remain in the state of investment in which they may be found at the
time of my decease or may be invested on government securities or
any other stocks or securities .... or may at the absolute
discretion of my trustees be invested on the debentures stocks share
or securities of any Municipal Corporation or Railway Company in
England or Wales or may at the absolute discretion of my trustees be
deposited at interest with the Bradford Second Equitable Benefit
Building Society, the Bradford Third Equitable Benefit Building
Society or any Banker in England.
It shall be lawful for my trustees to pay out
of my estate any call or calls upon my shares which I may at the
time of my decease hold in any Railway or other Company and also to
accept or refuse any new shares or stocks in any such Railway or
other Company which may be allotted to them ....
In witness whereof I have to this my last Will
and Testament ... subscribed my hand this 3rd day of September 1902.

was granted at Wakefield to ANN SOWDEN and JOHN HENRY KNOWLES the

Be it known that CHARLES SOWDEN of 98 Beldon
Road, Great Horton in the City of Bradford, grocer and beerseeler,
who at the time of his death had a fixed abode of 98 Beldon Road ...
died on the 29 September 1902 at 3 Barnes Road, Morecambe in the
County of Lancaster
