Esther Clark who was
buried at Hawkshead
in 1830, and was

1773; he married
Mary Bell and had
four sons and two
daughters.

In the name of God,
Amen. This is the last
will and testament of me
John Scales of Outyeat
in Fieldhead Quarter in
the Parish of Hawkshead
and County of Lancaster,
yeoman, being at this
time in poor state of
health but of sound
perfect disposing mind
memory and
understanding, praised
be to Almighty God for
the same, and calling to
mind the uncertainty of
this transitory life do
hereby make ordain
publish and declare this
to be my last will and
testament in manner and
form following:
First, for the payment
of all my just debts,
funeral and testamentary
expenses, I will that
they be paid by my
executor hereinafter
named from and out of
all my real and personal
estate and effects at my
decease.
I give unto my son John
Scales the sum of one
pound and one shilling
to be paid unto him by
my executor herein after
named at the end of one
whole year after my
decease from and out of
all my real estate and
effects having
heretofore advanced him
in the world.
I also give grant and
devise and bequeath unto
my son Rowland Scales
all my customary
messuages lands and
premises that are
situate, standing, lying
and being at Outyeat in
Fieldhead Quarter or
elsewhere in the Parish
of Hawkshead and said
County of Lancaster,
with all their rights,
members and
appurtenances at my
decease, to have and to
hold the same unto him
my said son Rowland
Scales and to his heirs
and assigns forever
under the rents and
fines as are therefore
due and payable for the
same at my decease to
the Lord or Lords
thereof.
I also give and bequeath
to my said son Rowland
Scales all my stock of
cattle, horses, all my
stock of Heath Bred
sheep, all my household
goods and husbandry gear
or whatever else to me
belonging or
appertaining at my
decease, subject and
upon conditions that he
my said son do pay all
my just debts, funeral
and testamentary
expenses and legacies by
me herein given.
I also give and bequeath
unto my grandson John
Scales the sum of five
pounds a year during the
time that he may
continue in my said son
Rowland service, twenty
Gimmer Sheep out of my
said stock of sheep
herein before given to
my said son Rowland
Scales and Poney which
my said grandson
commonly used at the
time when my said
grandson ceases to be in
the service of my said
son Rowland Scales and I
hereby charge my said
real estate and personal
effects therewith.
And lastly I do hereby
nominate and appoint my
said son Rowland Scales
sole executor of this my
will, he paying all my
just debts funeral and
testamentary expenses
legacies and bequests by
me herein before in this
my will given.
Hereby declaring these
presents to be and
contain my last will and
testament, in witness
whereof I, the said John
Scales, the testator,
hath hereunto set my had
and seal this thirtieth
day of December in the
year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred
and thirty (1830)

On the second day of
February in the year of
our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and thirty
two, this will of John
Scales late of Outyeat
in the Parish of
Hawkshead in the County
of Lancaster within the
Archdeaconry of Richmond
in the Diocese of
Chester, yeoman, who
departed this life on or
about the twenty eighth
day of December in the
year one thousand eight
hundred and thirty one,
was proved in common
form and Rowland Scales
of Outyeat aforesaid,
yeoman, sole executor
therein named was sworn
well and faithfully to
execute and perform the
same and so forth, and
that to the best of his
knowledge, information
and belief the whole of
the goods, chattels and
credits of which the
said testator John
Scales died possessed
within the Archdeaconry
aforesaid (exclusive of
what the said testator
might have been
possessed of or intitled
to as a Trustee for any
other person or persons
and not beneficially and
without deducting
anything on account of
the debts due and owing
by and from the said
testator) were under the
value of one hundred
pounds.
