In
the name of God Amen.
The twenty second day of
June Anno Domini 1714,
I, Ellen Scales of
Thwaitehead in the
parish of Colton and in
the county of Lancaster,
widow, sick in body but
of perfect mind and
memory, praised be
Almighty God for the
same, do make and
declare this to be my
last will and testament
in manner following
First, I give my soul to
God that gave it me,
hoping through the
merits of Christ death
to have full pardon of
all my sins, and my body
I commit to the earth to
be decently buried at
the discretion of my
executors hereafter
named
And for my personal
estate I devise and
dispose of the same as
followeth
Imprimis, I give to my
son John Scales the sum
of five pounds of good
and lawful money of
Great Britain
Item, I give to my
granddaughter Ellen
Scales the sum of eight
pounds of good and
lawful money as above
mentioned by every and
equal portions
Item, I give to my
granddaughter Ellen
Scales my box and all
that is in it
Item, I make my
daughter-in-law Agnes
Scales sole executrix of
this my last will and
testament, she paying
all my just debts and
funeral expenses and
legacies above mentioned
Supervisors, I desire
and appoint Myles
Drinkall of Rusland and
Reginald Strickland of
Rusland, desiring them
to see this my will
performed and my
executrix to ?content
them for their pains

The first part of the
bond is in Latin. It
binds Agnes Scales of
Thwaitehead in Colton,
Lancashire , widow, and
Miles Drinkall of
Rusland in the same, in
the amount of £100 and
is dated 3 June 1715.
The remainder is in
English as follows:
The condition of this
obligation is such that
if the above bounden
Agnes Scales shall and
do well and truly
execute and perform the
will and testament of
Ellen Scales, widow,
late of Thwaitehead in
Colton, deceased, and do
pay all her debts and
legacies so far as her
goods will extend and
the law shall bind her;
if also she do exhibit
into the registry office
a true and perfect
inventory of the
deceased’s goods and
personal estate and give
the court a true and
just account of her
acting in the premises
when she shall be
thereunto lawfully
called; and lastly do
keep indemnified the
above named Lord Bishop
of Chester, his
commissary and all other
his officers and
ministers against all
persons by reason of the
premises, that then this
obligation to be void.
