In the Name of God Amen I THOMAS RAPER of
Langthorne in the County of York gentleman in the parish of Bedall [Bedale]
being in good health and perfect memory praised be god for it but
calling to mind the uncertainty of this present life do make and
publish and declare these presents to be my Last Will and Testament
. I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it my
body I commit to the earth to be buried under the blew stone in
Bedall church where my relations lye and as to my personal estate I
give and bequeath to the Poor of Bedall £10 to be distributed at the
discretion of my executrix hereinafter named.
Item I give to my neice ELIZABETH HANKIN the
sum of £50
To my neice JANE FOTHERGILL £50
to my neice MARY RAPER £250
To my neice DINAH LANGSTAFF of Brunton £20
To FRANCES NORTHORP of Brunton daughter of
DINAH LANGSTAFF £20
To RALPH LANGSTAFF of Brunton £20
To EDWARD LISTER of Ascough [Aiskew] £50
To THOMAS LISTER of London £50
To MARY LISTER of Ascough £50
To ANTHONY LISTER dyer £20
To ISABELLA ASCOUGH of Ascough £20
To ROGER GALE Esq and ROGER HENRY GALE Esq to
each of them £20 to buy them mourning
All the rest and residue of my personal estate
I give devise and bequeath unto my neice CATHERINE STRANGEWAYS for
ever and as to all and singular my messuages lands hereditaments and
real estate I dispose of the same as followeth
First I give to my nephew GEORGE RAPER of
Rygate in the County of Surrey one annuity or yearly rent charge of
£50 for and during his natural life the same to be paid out of the
rents and profits of my real estate at the Feast of St Michael and
the Annunciaton of the Blessed Virgin Mary be equal portions the
first payment to ne made at the first of the said Feasts that shall
happen next after my dcease. My will is that in case it is not paid
.... my said nephew may distrain for the same upon all or any part
of my said real estate ...
I do hereby give and devise all my said real
estate to my neice CATHERINE STRANGEWAYS of Langthorne for and
during her natural life and after her decease .... to ROGER GALE
and ROGER HENRY GALE Esq.... during the life of the said CATHERINE
STRANGEWAYS upon trust to preserve the contingent remaindered
hereinafter limitted from being destroyed and after the
determination of that estate then to the first and every other son
of her body .... according to their seniority of age ... provided
and upon the condition that such son or sons and their issue ....
take upon them the surname RAPER and for want of such issue I give
and devise the same to my neice MARY RAPER for her natural life ....
then to her son or sons ... upon condition that such son or sons ...
take upon them the surname RAPER and for want of such issue I give
and devise the same to my nephew GEORGE RAPER for and during his
natural life and after his decease then to EDWARD LISTER of Ascough....
and after his decease to his brother THOMAS LISTER .... and after
his decease to MARY LISTER daughter of ANTHONY LISTER of Ascough ...
and after her decease then to my own right heirs forever. And I do
make and appoint my said neice CATHERINE STRANGEWAYS sole executor
