In the name of god Amen The first daye of
July: the yere of or lord god A Thousand fyve
hundrethe fourti and nyne / and the thirde yere of the rayne of
our Souerayne Lord Edward the sixt by the grace of god kinge of
Englande ffrannce and Ireland defender of the ffaith and on
earth of the churche of Englande and also of Irelande
[immediately] under god the supreme God I Humfrey Prydeaux
Esquier being of hole mynde pfyt [perfect] of remembrance and in
whole of bodye thanks be to god. mak and ordeyne this my last
will and testament in manner and forme folowing – ffirst I
bequeathe my soule to almightie god my Savio r and
redemer / and to or [our] blessed Lady and to all the
holy company of heaven / And I will that my bodye be buried in
the south ?? of the pyhe [parish] churche of Sutcomb yf it
fortune me to dye ther / or nere vnto yt / Item I giue to the ??
churche of Sutcomb xxvjs vijd / Item I giue to Symon Atken psone
[parson] there …… / Item I will that Edith my wyfe
shall haue all her apparrell wt [with] all maner of
Juells [jewels] as Chaynes Ringes and other necessaries
belonging to her bodie /Also I giue and bequeath vnto the same
Edith A gilt Salt with a cover A cruse with a cover and foote
gilt / A ??ppe for ale wt a cover pcell gilt / two
gobletts wt Armes. and one cover pcell gilt A flat
boll [bowl] wth armes pcell gilt / haulf a dosyn [dozen] of
syluer spoones with smale knappes And haulf a dosyn with rownd
knappes the knapps gilt / all whiche plate except the cruse was
s???tyned Richard pkehowse / Also I giue and bequeathe to the
said Edith my seconde best bedd wh bolster pillowes
sheets blankets and coverlet belonging to the same / And also
the fourthe best fetherbedd newe Bolster Pillowes sheets
blanketts and Couerlet therunto belonging / bothe whiche beddes
were s???tyned Richard parkhouse / And also aneother h?ery bedde
wt almaner [all manner] stuf belonging to the same
for her s??tes / Item I giue and bequeathe vnto the said Edith
my wyfe her Ryding horse saddell bridell and all other apparrell
necessarie for the same / And one other horse wh
saddell brydell and other apell [apparel] for one……. to way…on
her / Item I will that my Executor shall fynde sufficient mete &
drynk to the saide Edith and to one man [servant] and one woman
[servant] the space of one hole yere next and ymmediatly after
my decease / And she to haue the porche Chamber and the closet
seuerally to herself during the same yere / Item I giue and
bequeath vnto Elizabeth my daughter towards
thadvanncement [the advancement] of her mariage two Hundreth
marks sterling to be paid her at the daye of her mariage / So
that she be maried by th aduyse of my wyfe yf she be on lyf
[alive] / and yf she be dedde / then by the aduyse of Richard my
sonne and heire Sr Hugh Pollard Knight Nicholas
Prydeaux my brother and Thomas Hacche my brother in lawe
or by the more pte [part?] of them longest lyving / But yf she
mary wr out their assents or the more pte of them
being on lyve / Then she to haue somythe [something?] towards
her said mariage of the saide two hundreth marks as shalbe
thought convenient by the discrecion of Richard my sonne Sr
Hugh Pollard Knight Nicholas Prydeaux and Thomas Hache or the
more pte of them / Prouided always that yf the said Elizabeth do
pmise? [promise] suche terme right title or interest as she hath
in the manor of Vyall …by Vyaltoy? and Betharffe in the Countie
of Cornewall / That then she to haue but one hundreth mk piece?
of the said two hundreth marks / Item if it fortune my said
daughter Elizabeth to dye before mariage hadd / That

bequeathe to Margaret Trobridge my daughters daughter to
be paidde and [delivered] her at the daye of her mariage / And
other…..I giue and bequeathe vnto ffredinad [Ferdinand]
Williams my nephewe to be paide and delyvered vnto hym when
he comyth to th age of xxiij [?] years / Item I giue vnto
John Lenard my suite foure good Justmit kee [cows] with
their calves if they be not wayned [weaned] at the tyme of my
death / Item whereas I am possessed of and in a lease of the
Tuthyng fyshe of the parishe of Padstone in the Countie of
Cornewall for the terme of fourescore yeres and more / as hit
more playnly apperts by a dede lately made to me the saide
Humfrey by the late pryp? and So?ement of Bodmyn vnder their
?enent seale and allowed in the Kings Court of Angmentancy?
vnder his greate seale / I giue bequeath & assigne all the said
lease by this my last will vnto William Prydeaux my sonne
Jane his wyfe and to the heires of their body lawfully
begotten. And he to begyn to take the profitts of the same at
the feast of th anniversary of our blessid ladye the ?ongon next
and ymmediatly after my deceas and yf it fortune them and the
issue of their two bodies to dye before thend? and terme of the
said Lease / That then I giue and bequeathe assigne all suche
yeres. that shalbe then to come of the same graunt to suche as
shalbe then my rightheires / Item I will that my Executor sonne
Homfrey brought merth according to my degree / And that euery
poo[r?] creature at the tyme of my death widal the moneth mynde
to haue two pence in almes / And all other to haue mete drynke
or dole? at the [discretion] of my Executor or Overseers / Item
I will that my heyre and Executour kepe contynu? ?ally household
at Thubourghe the space of one hole yere next after my decease /
And all servants? that be in wage at the tyme of my death shall
haue meat & drynk till the moneth daye be past / Item I guie to
euery of them one haulf yeres wage [over] and aboue all suche
wages as shalbe dew vnto them at th ende of the quarter as shall
fortune me to dye in Item I will that my wyfe gaue a blacke
gowne and a blacke kertell / And that [every] of my children
being at my burying or moneth myn day to haue a blacke gown /
and eny other [servant] being in wages / and all other my
bayliff whiche I haue vsed to gere? h?dy? vnto to ?? ?? ?? And
euery woman [servant] to haue ?? petition? / Item I charge my
heyre that he suffer ??? my wyfe. Thomas Prydeaux. And all other
my ?? to myon? all suche graunts? and feafes as I haue made
them. or hereafter shall make them / be yt by my feaffement dede

graunt or grauntes as is made them or any of them according to

the lands be intayled or in Jointoure or in vse vppon payne of
my course And as he shall antis?ive ? at the dredefull daye of
Jugement / Item I will an Inuentorie be taken ymmediatly after
my deceas of all my goodes plate stuf of household and all other
maner goodes and cattall (both ?? door and without / And that to
be praysed [appraised] by four indefferent psons as my Executour
or ouerseers shall appount / And an Indenture therof to be made
th one pte to of the saide Indenture to remayne with my home? /
and th other parte wt my Overseers / And yf my home
do vexe Edith my wyfe. Thomas my sonne / or put out any of my
tenants or defete them of such estate graunt or ?? with as I
haue made or hereafter may make vnto them or to any of them
other then for nowe keping of the continu??? coprised? inther?
leases or lease graunte or grauntes copie or custome / Then I
will that my said goods be solde by my Overseers. whome I do
then make and ordeyne by this psent my Executours And thereby
discharge the said Richard / And then then they to paye all my
debts and ?? and to se that my Last will in euery thing pformyd

recompensed according to suche cost or hurts as they haue therin
sustayned for not myoyeng ther efrate? or efrats / Item I will
that my heyre shall paye yerely towards the fynding of
Elizabeth my daughter yf it fortune Edith my wyfe to dye
before the said Elizabeth be maried. three poundes sixe
shillings and eight pence sterling / and he to fynde her meate &
drynk as longe as she fareth with hym vnmaried. till she haue
sufficient advanncement to the there yerely vagle? of ……… / Item
I will that my Executour se all suche legace to be pformed
whiche be not don. at the tyme of my death / as is to be pformyd
by the last will and Testament of my late brother Richard
Prydeaux [which] made me his hoole [whole] Executour Item I
will that my sonne Richard shall fynile [finally?] my Nevee
[nephew?] fferdynand well and honestly mete drynk and clothe as
longe as he listeth to tarry with my said sonne Richard / Item
any Ambiguite contrariete or any mysscrehersall dowt or
doublenes be founde in any of the said artycles ??etified wtin
this my saide will and testament / that then I will the said do
note to be interpreteate reformyd and amendyd by th admyse of
Symon Atkyns pson of Sutcomb and Edith my wyfe to whome I haue
more playnly declared my mynde by mony so that the same may be
executed according to the true intent and mynde of me the said
Humfrey Prydeaux / the residue of my goodes my funerall do me ?oth
honestie accordyng to my degree my debts paide and Legacies
pformyd. I giue and bequeath vnto Richard my Sonne and heire
apparent to maynteyn hospitable and Rychaushold. to praye for my
soule and all other my Annsetters [ancestors’] soules and all
Cristen soules / Whom I make and ordeyn by this my last will my
hoole Executour / Item I make and ordeyn my Overseeers of this
my pnte [present] will my brother Nicholas Prydeaux Robert
Prydeaux clerk / and Thomas Hatche my brother in lawe / And I
giue and bequeath to every of them a black gowne for ther paynes
and labor in the premisses / Thies? bring next ? Symon Atkyns my
goostly [ghostly, i.e., spiritual] father Nicholas Prideaux my
brother Edmond Sperott Thomas Gyffarde of Halfeloxy Esquier John
Stowell? and others / In wytnes wherof . I haue subscribed this
