Notes:

1.   Robert Phippen (d 1672) was a son of George Phippen (d c1659)

2.   Katherine Rogers (c1640-c1698) was testator’s niece, daughter of his brother Ralph (d 1667), and wife of testator’s executor John Rogers

3.   Joan Whiting’s kinship to testator is not known

4.   William Phippen was testator’s nephew, son of his brother Ralph

5.   George Phippen was testator’s brother

6.   Jane Phippen was the wife of testator’s brother Thomas (d 1670)

Text:

In the name of God, Amen.  The sixth day of August in the four and twentieth year of the reign of our sovereign lord Charles the second, by the grace of God of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, King, defender of the faith, and in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred seventy and two, I, Robert Phippen of West Holme in the parish of Pilton in the county of Somerset, yeoman, being imperfect in body but of perfect mind and memory, praised be God, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say,

Imprimis, I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker, trusting that through the death and sufferings of Jesus Christ my redeemer he will forgive my sins and receive me into his heavenly kingdom; and my body to the earth to be buried in Christian burial in the churchyard near to my father’s tomb

Item, I give to the poor of Pilton the sum of forty shillings to be paid in half a year after my decease

Item, I give and bequeath to my servant Joan ?Lawrence the sum of twenty pounds of lawful English money to be paid her in one year after my decease and the biggest brass ?crock and my biggest brass ?pan and my chest in the hall chamber

Item, I give and bequeath to my kinswoman Katherine Rogers’ five children ten pounds equally to be divided between them in one year after my decease, and in case either of them die before the time that same money to remain among the rest of them equally divided

Item, I give and bequeath to my kinsman William Phippen of Pennard and his son William, forty shillings apiece and to be paid in one year after my decease

Item, I give and bequeath to my kinsman George Phippen of Shepton Mallett five pounds of lawful money of England and to be paid in one year after my decease, and all my wearing apparel, and that to be delivered to him in half a year after my decease

Item, I give and bequeath to my kinswoman Joane Whiting five pounds of lawful English money to be paid her as aforesaid

Item, I give to my sister-in-law Jane Phippen’s four children four pounds to be equally divided among them within one year after my decease, and if either of them die before the time, that to be divided equally among the rest that shall be then living

Item, I give to my servant Mary Sansom forty shillings to be paid here as aforesaid

Item, all the rest of my goods and chattels not before given nor bequeathed, I give and bequeath unto my kinsman John Rogers of West Compton, and I do make him my whole and sole executor of this my last will and testament, he seeing my debts and legacies paid and my funeral expenses of ten pounds to be ???

And lastly I do ?intreat and appoint my welbeloved friends Philip Bithesea and Robert Curles to be my overseers in the performance hereof and for their pains I give them twelve pence a piece

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written the mark of Robert Phippen

Sealed and published in the presence of us  Thomas Warde,  the mark of Samuel Bedford, otherwise Reeves

 

Probate is in Latin, dated 4 December 1672, granted to John Rogers, executor
