In
the name of God, Amen.
The sixth day of August
in the four and
twentieth year of the
reign of our sovereign
lord Charles the second,
by the grace of God of
England, Scotland,
France and Ireland,
King, defender of the
faith, and in the year
of our Lord God one
thousand six hundred
seventy and two, I,
Robert Phippen of West
Holme in the parish of
Pilton in the county of
Somerset, yeoman, being
imperfect in body but of
perfect mind and memory,
praised be God, do make
and ordain this my last
will and testament in
manner and form
following, that is to
say,
Imprimis, I bequeath my
soul into the hands of
Almighty God my maker,
trusting that through
the death and sufferings
of Jesus Christ my
redeemer he will forgive
my sins and receive me
into his heavenly
kingdom; and my body to
the earth to be buried
in Christian burial in
the churchyard near to
my father’s tomb
Item, I give to the poor
of Pilton the sum of
forty shillings to be
paid in half a year
after my decease
Item, I give and
bequeath to my servant
Joan ?Lawrence the sum
of twenty pounds of
lawful English money to
be paid her in one year
after my decease and the
biggest brass ?crock and
my biggest brass ?pan
and my chest in the hall
chamber
Item, I give and
bequeath to my kinswoman
Katherine Rogers’ five
children ten pounds
equally to be divided
between them in one year
after my decease, and in
case either of them die
before the time that
same money to remain
among the rest of them
equally divided

bequeath to my kinsman

William, forty shillings
apiece and to be paid in

them within one year

either of them die

servant Mary Sansom
forty shillings to be
paid here as aforesaid

goods and chattels not
before given nor
bequeathed, I give and
bequeath unto my kinsman

Compton, and I do make
him my whole and sole
executor of this my last
will and testament, he
seeing my debts and
legacies paid and my
funeral expenses of ten
