In
the name of God Amen.
The twenty fourth day of
May Anno Domini one
thousand six hundred
sixty seven and in the
nineteenth yeare of the
reign of our sovereign
Lord King Charles the
second by god’s
providence over England,
Scotland France and
Ireland etc.
I
Ralph Phippen the elder
of Little Pennard in the
Parish of East Pennard
in the County of
Somerset, yeoman, being
sick and weak of body
but of perfect mind and
memory (the Lord’s holy
name be praised) and
knowing the uncertainty
of this life and being
desirous to settle my
estate do make this my
last will and testament
in manner and form
following, viz
First and principally I
commend my soul to
Almighty God my creator
assured by believing
that I shall receive
full pardons and free
remission of all my sins
and to be saved by the
precious death and
merits of my blessed
saviour and redeemer
Christ Jesus; and my
body to the earth from
whence it was taken to
be buried in the
Christian Burial place
of the parish of Pilton
in the said County there
to lie near my father
and mother in such
decent manner as my
executor shall think
meet and convenient
And as touching such
worldly effects as the
Lord in mercy hath lent
me, my will and meaning
is the same shall be
employed and bestowed as
hereafter by this my
will is expressed; and
first I do revoke,
renounce, frustrate and
make void all and every
will and wills either by
word or written by me
formerly made and do
hereby declare and
appoint this to be my
last will and testament
Item I give to my wife
the same moiety or
halfendeal of my
tenement as I now dwell
??? in being the same
parte which she had
formerly, for and during
her natural life and two
?cows and one ?mare
Item I give and bequeath
to my son Ralph Phippen
my two chattel ?leases
and all the estate
therein contained
together with the fee
simple of ??? of the
said two chattells
?forever situate lying
and being in manor and
parish of Ditcheat in
the said county of
Somerset to be had and
held to the said Ralph
Phippen my son
immediately upon my
decease and to his heirs
and assigns for evermore
Item I give and bequeath
to my said son Ralph
Phippen the reversion of
White ?tenement which I
lately purchased of Mr
John Farbin together
with the same ?bargain
as I have of my
son-in-law John White by
articles of covenant for
the said Ralph to have
and hold the same
bargain performing all
and every the said
articles of covenant
Item I also give and
bequeath to the said
Ralph my son the sum of
twenty pounds to be in
lieu of that ??? pounds
which my father and his
grandfather gave him and
the same to be paid to
the said Ralph when he
shall attain to the age
of one and twenty years,
he then the said Ralph
upon receipt thereof to
give my executor
releases also a release
to Robert Phippen my
brother for the said ???
pounds which was to him
given by his grandfather
Item I give to my
daughter Catherine the
wife of John Rogers one
three year aged ?heifer,
and also I do give to
her two daughters Anne
and Catherine the sum of
five pounds apiece to be
paid to them as they
shall attain the age of
one and twenty years or
their day of marriage
which first shall happen
Item I give to William
Rogers my grandchild the
sum of five pounds to be
paid to him as soon as
he shall attain the age
of one and twenty years
Item I give to my
brother George Phippen
all my wearing apparel
Item I give to the poor
of the parish of East
Pennard the sum of
twenty shillings
Item I give to the poor
of the parish of Pilton
the sum of twenty
shillings
Item I give and bequeath
that halfendeal or halfe
part of the ?tenement
that I now live in which
was to me assigned over
by George Phelpes my
father in law together
with the reversion of
the whole to William
Phippen my son whom I do
hereby make and ordain
to be my sole and whole
executor of this my last
will and testament that
after my funeral
expenses debts and
legacies discharged and
paid my my will is that
all my chattel leases,
chattel goods, debts,
bills, bonds, household
goods and all and all
manner of goods and
utensils whatsoever now
belonging to me in what
hands or in what place
soever they may be found
being not herein upon
??? my last will and
testament given and
bequeathed shall remain
and be to my executor as
his own proper goods
without any manner of
contradiction
