In the Name of God
Amen. The twenty
fifth day of May in the
year of our Lord God one
thousand six hundred
fifty two, I, George
Phippen of East Compton
within the parish of
Pulton alias Pilton in
the County of Somerset,
yeoman, being sick in
body but sound in mind
and memory (thanks be to
Almighty God) do ordain
and make this my last
will and testament in
manner and form
following
First I bequeath my soul
to God my only maker and
redeemer and my body to
the earth from whence it
came and to be buried in
Christian burial in the
Churchyard of Pulton
alias Pilton aforesaid
near my first wife; I
give and bequeath to the
Church of Pulton alias
Pilton three shillings
and four pence; Item I
give and bequeath to the
poor of Pulton alias
Pilton three shillings
and four pence
Item I give to George
Phippen five pounds to
be paid within one month
after my decease and my
best suit of apparel
Item I give and bequeath
to my son Thomas Phippen
my furnace and brewing
vats and the bed in the
west loft with the
furniture thereto
belonging
Item I give and bequeath
to my son Ralph Phippen
my silver bowl and my
best ?crocks; and to his
daughter Katherine
Phippen one silver
spoon; Item I give and
bequeath to Ralph
Phippen the son of the
aforesaid Ralph the sum
of ten pounds which
remains in his father’s
hand as may appear by
his bond given for the
sum to be paid him
within one year after my
decease
Item I give to the said
Joane Phippen the
daughter of the said
George Phippen one
silver spoon
Item I give to my
kinswoman Hanna ?Cupper
one silver spoon that
came from my uncle

Item I give and bequeath
to Anne my now wife all
my kyne that I dye
possessed of and one
mare and the use of my
household stuff ungiven
as long as she keepeth
herself a widow and
unmarried, except my
best brass pan and
second best feather bed
and the furniture
belonging to him which I
give and bequeath to my
son Robert; and if she
happen to marry or dye
unmarried, then my will
is that all of the
household stuff before
lent unto her shall
remain to my Executor
hereunder named
And my will is that my
said wife Anne shall pay

administration lawfully
authorized by the oath
of Robert Phippen the
natural and lawful son
of the said deceased and
sole Executor named in
the said will to whom
was granted
Administration of all
and singular the goods
chattels and debts of
the said deceased he
being first sworn by
virtue of a Commission
well and truly to
