Notes:

1.   Testatrix, Ann (or Agnes) Phippen was daughter of George Phelps; she married first Stephen White and second Ralph Phippen, and had children by both husbands

2.   Anne White must have been the wife of testatrix’s son Stephen White

3.   Ralph Phippen was testatrix’s son by her second husband, presumably dead when she made her will

4.   Amy and John Giblett were children of testatrix’s daughter Anne Phippen, wife of John Giblett

5.   Katherine Rogers was testatrix’s daughter by Ralph Phippen and the wife of John Rogers

6.   Mary White was apparently unmarried

7.   Anne White was testatrix’s daughter by her first husband and the wife of John White

8.   William Phippen was executor of both his parents’ wills

Text:

In the name of God Amen.  I Ann Phippen of the parish of Pilton alias Pulton in the County of Somerset, widow, being sick in body but of perfect mind and remembrance (praised by God) do make this my last will and testament in manner following

First and above all things I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator Trusting in Jesus Christ my Redeemer that by the shedding of his most precious Blood my sins are forgiven;  and my body I commit to Christian burial in the Parish Church yard of East Pennard

Item, I give to my daughter-in-law Anne White an annuity of three pounds by the year during the life of Mrs. Joane Redwood

And I give to my son Stephen White one other annuity of twenty shillings by the year during the life of the said Mrs. Joane Redwood being the interest of a legacy of fifty pounds given unto me by my son Ralph Phippen and the same now remaining in the hands of John Hedland of Pill in the County of Somerset, yeoman, which said fifty pounds there will be ?five and twenty pounds due to me after the death of the said Mrs. Joane Redwood out of which sum of twenty five pounds I do give and bequeath to my grandchild Amy Giblett the sum of twenty pounds, and to the five children of my daughter Katherine Rogers (that is to say Anne Rogers, Katherine Rogers, William Rogers, Edith Rogers, and John Rogers) the sum of twenty shillings a piece being the remainder of the aforesaid twenty five pounds, and to be paid by the executors hereinafter named one month after the death of the said Mrs. Joane Redwood.

Item I give to my daughter Mary White the interest money of one hundred and twenty pounds after my decease yearly to be paid unto her during her natural life

Item I give to the children of my daughter Anne White the sum of fourscore pounds part of the said sum of one hundred and twenty pounds that is to say to Anne White, Rachel White, John White, Richard White, and Katherine White to be equally divided between them and the survivors of them after the decease of my daughter Mary White at the discretion of the overseers of this my said will hereinafter named

Item I give to my son Wm Phippen’s two children, viz William Phippen and Thomas Phippen, the sum of twenty pounds, part of the said sum of one hundred and twenty pounds, and to be equally divided between them after the decease of the said Mary White at the discretion of my said overseers

And my will and pleasure further is that if the interest money aforesaid be not sufficient maintenance for my daughter Mary that then the other twenty pounds the remainder of the aforesaid one hundred and twenty pounds shall be and remain unto the sole use of my said daughter Mary, and after her decease the same to remain to my Executors if any shall be left thereof

Item I bequeath to my son William Phippen the sum of five shillings

Item I give to my daughter Katherine Rogers the sum of five shillings

Item I give to my grandchild John Giblett the sum of twenty shillings

Item I give to my daughter Mary White one bed with all the furniture thereunto belonging

Item I give to my cousin Anne White my best suite of apparel, and I give to my daughter Mary White all the rest of my wearing apparel

Item I give to Philip Bythesea one warming pan and to his wife ?Dionysia one of the best wroughted cushions now in my house

All the rest of my goods and chattels of what nature or kind soever it be moveable and unmoveable not before given or bequeathed, I do give and bequeath to my son William Phippen and my daughter in law Ann White joint Executors of this my said last will and testament, and to see my honest and just debts and legacies paid and funeral charges disbursed, hereby revoking all former and other wills

And I do desire and appoint my welbeloved friends and neighbours Philip Bythesea and John Rogers to be the overseers of this my said last will, and to be aiding and assisting to my said executors in the due execution of this my said will, and for their pains taken therein I do give to each of them five shillings

This is my Last Will and Testament, and for the better confirmation hereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal the seven and twentieth day of March in the six and twentieth year of his Majesty’s Reign King Charles the Second over England etc., anno domini 1674.   The mark of // Ann Phippen //

Probate was granted in London  6 January 1674/5 to William Phippen and Anne White.
