In
the name of God, Amen.
The third day of October
in the one and twentieth
year of the reign of our
sovereign lord Charles
the second, by the grace
of God of England,
Scotland, France and
Ireland, King, defender
of the faith, I, Thomas
Phippen of East Compton
in the parish of Pilton
alias Pulton in the
county of Somerset,
yeoman, being sick in
body but of perfect mind
and memory (praised be
God), and well knowing
the certainty of death
although the uncertain
time thereof, do make
this my last will and
testament in manner and
form following
First, I bequeath my
soul into the hands of
Almighty God my creator
trusting in Jesus Christ
my redeemer that by the
shedding of his most
precious blood my sins
are forgiven
And for the temporal
estate which it hath
pleased God to bestow on
me here in this world, I
do give and devise them
in manner following
First, I do give and
bequeath unto my
daughter Rose Phippen
all the household goods
that is now in my house
at West Compton, and one
box, one coffer and one
chest with all the
linens and woollen that
is now therein which was
her mother’s, one flock
bed, one coverlet, two
blankets, two ???, one
bolster and other things
thereto belonging (only
the bedstead excepted),
two pewter platters,
which was one of them
her grandfather’s and
the other her mother’s
maiden platter, and six
small pewter dishes or
platters, one ??? and
two barrels, one chattel
lease of two parcels of
land called Stickhayes
granted by Hugh
Fortescue, esquire,
lying in West Compton
aforesaid, for four
score and nineteen
years, if Rose Phippen,
John Jennings and
Richard Day or any or
either of them shall for
so long live, in
consideration whereof I
do grant and allow that
the said Rose shall pay
unto my daughter Jane
Phippen the sum of fifty
pounds when and at what
time she shall
accomplish the age of
fourteen years, and in
case the said Rose shall
die without issue, then
my will is that my
daughter Jane shall have
the said chattel during
the term then to come
and unexpired
Item, I give and
bequeath unto my two
sons George Phippen and
Thomas Phippen all my
plow harness and to be
equally divided; and I
do give unto my son
George three score
pounds and to my son
Thomas Phippen three
score pounds to be paid
when the come to age;
and my will further is
that if my executrix and
overseers shall buy my
tenement at East Compton
into the said George and
Thomas then the money to
be deducted out of their
said portions of three
score pounds apiece
Item, I give and
bequeath unto my son
Robert Phippen three
score pounds and that it
be put out to ??? by my
overseers in three years
after my decease for the
benefit of the said
Robert till he shall
accomplish the age of
one and twenty years
Item, my will is that
the for the six score
pounds given to my sons
George and Thomas that
my executrix shall keep
it during the term
unless they shall buy
the said ?living or that
my said executrix marry
within the said term,
then forthwith I do
appoint my overseers to
take it into their
custody or to order it
according to their
discretion as may be for
the behoof of the said
boys
Item, all the rest of my
goods not before given
nor bequeathed, I do
give and bequeath unto
my wife Jane Phippen and
do make her my sole
executrix of this my
last will and testament
And I do make ??? and
appoint Robert Phippen,
my brother, and Robert
Warford, my
brother-in-law to be my
overseers, and for their
pains I do give them
twelve pence apiece
