Text:
In
the name of God, Amen.
I Richard Pether, alias
Pedder, the elder of
Preston in the County
Palatine of Lancaster,
linen weaver, being weak
in body but of sound and
disposing mind and
memory do for the
settling of my temporal
concerns make and ordain
this to be my last
[will] and testament as
follows
And first I will that
all my just debts,
funeral expenses and the
charge of the probate of
this my will be paid off
and discharged firstly
out of my personal
estate
Item, I do hereby give
devise and bequeath unto
my wife Ellen and her
assigns during her life
the house I now live in
standing in the
Friargate in Preston
aforesaid with the
buttery and room over
the same and also the
use of my household
goods (except as is
hereafter mentioned)
To
my son Paul Pedder the
sum of sixty eight
pounds
To
my daughter Jennet, now
wife of John Hodgkinson,
the sum of sixty pounds
To
my daughter Ellen, now
wife of Peter Hodgkinson,
the sum of sixty eight
pounds
To
my son Peter Pedder, his
executors, admons [?]
and also a close of
ground in Preston
aforesaid called Bell
Founders’ Field which I
hold by lease under
Henry Fleetwood Esquire
during all my whole
estate and interest
therein
To
my son Philip Pedder,
the sum of fifty pounds
To
my son-in-law Thomas
Holden the sum of twenty
pounds
To
my said wife Ellen the
sum of twenty five
shillings to be laid out
for her in a black gown
and hood
To
my executors hereafter
named the sum of five
pounds to be by them
distributed to poor
housekeepers within
Preston aforesaid at
their discretion
And it is my will and
mind that if my personal
estate falls short of
paying off and
discharging my debts,
funeral expenses and the
legacies by me above
bequeathed, then in such
case I do hereby charge
the same upon and my
will and mind is that
they be paid off and
discharged forth and out
of my real estate
Item, I do hereby give
devise and bequeath unto
my son Richard Pedder,
his heirs and [?] also
charged and chargeable
as aforesaid, all the
rest, residue and
remainder of my real and
personal estate of what
nature or kind soever as
also one chest with a
?desk or ?chest of
drawers in [?]
And I do hereby desire
that my executors do lay
a new grave stone over
me and I do hereby
revoke all former wills
by me at any time
heretofore made
And lastly I do hereby
nominate and appoint my
said son Richard, and
James ?Earleston of
Clifton, yeoman, to be
joint executors of this
my will
