The Will of George Mead

 

The last Will and Testament of George Mead of Buckhorn Weston in the County of Dorset Gentleman
I give and devise my messuage or tenement farm and lands called or known by the name of Sandley in the parish of Gillingham in the county of Dorset the same being copyhold of inheritance and which I bought of the Trustees of the late William Read Esquire deceased and have surrendered to the use of my Will and all other my lands and tenements (if any) in the said parish of Gillingham And also my close or piece of meadow or pasture land called or known by the name of Little Elm in the parish of Buckhorn Weston aforesaid with their rights members and appurtenances unto my daughter Sarah Burt the wife of Thomas Burt her heirs and assigns for ever.
I give and devise all and every my messuages lands and tenements situated lying and being in the parish of Buckhorn Weston aforesaid (accepting my said close or piece called Little Elm) and I also give and devise my close or piece of land called Pipland in the parish of Kington Magna in the said county of Dorset which I bought of Mr Thomas Dowding together with their rights members and appurtenances unto Charles Gatehouse of Buckhorn Weston aforesaid Gentleman and James Parsons the younger of Horsington in the county of Somerset yeoman and their heirs Upon Trust to pay and apply the rents and profits thereof unto my daughter Martha Bowles the wife of James Bowles to and for her own peculiar use and benefit for and during the term of her natural life exclusive of her said husband and not subject or liable to his debts intermeddling or control and her receipts alone and notwithstanding her coverture to be a sufficient discharge and discharges for all payments thereof And upon and after the decease of the said Martha Bowles my said daughter In Trust for all and every the children of her my said daughter their heirs and assigns for ever as tenants in common and not as joint tenants if more than one and if but one such alive only then In Trust for such only child his or her heirs and assigns for ever with benefit of survivorship in case any or either of such children shall happen to die before the age of twenty five years and without issue And also in case all and every the child and children of my daughter the said Martha Bowles shall happen to die before the said age of twenty five years and without issue then In Trust for my own right heirs for ever. And all my household goods and furniture monies and securities for money and all other my goods chattels personal estate and effects whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my two daughters the said Sarah Burt and Martha Bowles equally between them share and share alike as tenants in common as aforesaid And it is my Will and request that my Trustees and Executors do and shall attend assist direct and order the division of my said household goods and furniture between my said two daughters and that such their direction and order therein shall be final and conclusive to all parties. And I do constitute and appoint the said Charles Gatehouse and James Parsons Executors in Trust of this my Will hereby revoking and making void all former and other Will and Wills heretofore made I do publish and declare this Writing contained in two sheets of paper to be my last Will and Testament And lastly it is my Will and I do hereby declare that my said Trustees and Executors or either of them their heirs executors or administrators shall not be answerable or accountable for any loss of or in the said Trust Estates and Effects unless the same be occasioned by any voluntary or wilful neglect or misconduct Nor the one of them for the other nor for the acts deeds receipts or defaults of the other of them And also that they my said Trustees and Executors their heirs executors and administrators shall or may in the first place retain and have all such costs charges and expenses as they or either or any of them shall lay out expend or be put unto in or about the Trusts hereby reposed in them or in the execution of this my Will In Witness whereof I the said George Mead have hereunto subscribed and set my hand and seal this seventeenth day of March in the year of our Redemption one thousand eight hundred and twenty.
 

This Writing contained in two sheets of paper
was signed and sealed by George Mead the Testator
and by him published and declared as and for his last
Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his
presence have subscribed our Names as Witnesses thereto

A Codicil to be annexed to the last Will and Testament of George Mead of Buckhorn Weston in the county of Dorset bearing date this 17th day of March 1820 and to be taken as part thereof

I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Burt wife of Mr Thomas Burt the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid in one year next after my decease and I do charge my lands and tenements in the parish of Buckhorn Weston aforesaid with the payment thereof and for the purpose of making my two daughters more equal. In Witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed and set my hand and seal this seventeenth day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty.
 

This Writing was signed and sealed by the
said George Mead and by him published and
declared as and for a Codicil to be annexed to his
last Will and Testament and taken as part
thereof in the presence of us who have subscribed
our Names as Witnesses thereto in his presence

Memorandum that on the 9th day of September 1820. On which day Charles Gatehouse and James Parsons the younger came before me and made Oath that they would well and faithfully administer the Goods and Chattels of the deceased and that the same did not amount in value to three hundred pounds
