1648/9 and had a
large family; the
daughters’ baptismal
dates are: Agnes,
1627; Elizabeth,
1629; Dorothy, 1632;
Sybil, unknown;
Grace, 1638; and
Barbara 1646.

Will:
In
the name of God, Amen,
the eighth day of June,
Anno Domini 1647, I,
William Mackreth of
Sawrey infra in the
parish of Haukeshead,
sick [but] perfect in
mind and memory, praised
be God for the same, do
ordain and make this my
last will and testament
in manner and form
following;
First and princ[ipally]
I give and freely commit
my soul into the
merciful hands of
Almighty God my maker,
trusting through the
merits of Christ Jesus
my saviour to have full
remission [and]
forgiveness of all my
sins; and my body to be
buried in my parish
church of Haukeshead;
Item, it is my mind and
will and I give and
bequeath all my
messuages, lands,
tenements and parcels of
tenements whatsoever, as
well ancient as bought
and purchased, ??? which
I am now in possession
of unto Agnes, my wife
[???] and during the
full term and space of
three whole years next
after my decease for and
towards the bringing up
of my children; and
after the expiration of
the said three years I
give and bequeath all my
said messuages, lands,
tenements and parcels of
tenements as well bought
as ancient in Sawrey
infra and ?of ?whose
within Claife ??? the
said Agnes her third,
and unto Edward Mackreth
my son and to his heirs
and assigns forever, he
the said Edward my son
paying and discharging
??? ??? my said bought
grounds the sum of one
hundred and twenty
pounds unto my five
youngest daughters,
Elizabeth, Dorothy,
Sybil, Grace and Barbara
in manner following: viz,
thirty pounds unto my
daughter Elizabeth
within four years next
after my decease, and to
my daughter Dorothie the
sum of thirty pounds
within five years next
after my decease, and to
my daughter Sibell the
sum of twenty pounds
within six years next
after my decease, and to
my daughter Grace the
sum of twenty pounds
within seven years next
after my decease, and to
my daughter Barbarie the
sum of twenty pounds
within eight years next
after my decease, and
?enter sufficient
?security to my
supervisors hereafter
named or unto myself in
the time of my life if
conveniently it can be
done;
Item, it is my mind and
will that my said son
Edward shall come to the
possession of the one
half of all my said
tenements and bought
grounds at the end of
two years next after my
decease if he can agree
with Agnes my wife for
the same and if the
security be entered in
manner as aforesaid;
Item, whereas I have
sold my rights of one
tenement at the ??? in
Sawrey extra late in the
possession of William
Braithwaite my
father-in-law, late
deceased,, unto William
Sawrey son of Francis
for the sum of four
score and five pounds
(excepting one dale of
woods and ??? the
?hollow cork and another
in the Hockehow ???) it
is my mind and will and
I give and dispose of
the said four score and
five pounds as followeth,
viz, if ??? unto my two
daughters Elizabeth and
Dorothy, either of them,
twenty pounds apiece and
to my three youngest
daughters Sibell, Grace
and Barbarie the other
forty and five pounds
equally amongst them,
and that the same be put
forward for their use;
Item, I give unto my
daughter Agnes the sum
of three score and ???
pounds to be paid unto
of my goods if she
marries or makes choice
of a marriage with the
consent of my wife
Agnes, if not an
abatement to be made at
the discretion of my
supervisors;
Item, I give unto my son
Edward my plough and
plough gear and all the
loose boards over the
house in lieu of his
child portion unto ???

Item, I give unto
William Braithwaite my
son-in-law all my right
and title of peat moss
at the high moss as it
is marked;
Item, I give all the ???
goods moveable and
immoveable unto Agnes my
wife whom I make the
executrix hereof, my
debts, legacies and
funeral expenses first

this condition tat Agnes
my wife at the end of
the said three years
shall dispose of the
