In the Supreme Court of Judicature at Madras
Be it Known to all Men that on the twelfth day of May Anno Domini One
thousand eight hundred and thirty seven the last Will and Testament of
GEORGE LYS late of Madras Esquire deceased ( a copy of which is hereunto
annexed ) was exhibited read and proved before this Court and
Administration of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits to the
deceased in anywise belonging was and is hereby committed to JOHN ORR
Esquire as the surviving Executor in the said last Will named being
first sworn well and truly to administer the same and to pay the lawful
debts of the deceased and the legacies in the said will contained as far
as the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased shall extend and
the Law requires and also to exhibit unto this said Court a true and
perfect Inventory of all and singular the said Goods Chattels and
Credits and also a just account of all the effects of the said deceased
when he shall be thereto lawfully required given under the Seal of the
said Court at Madras aforesaid this seventeenth day of May One thousand

In the Name of God amen I GEORGE LYS Merchant of Madras being in sound
mind memory and understanding do make this my last Will and Testament
annulling all former Wills I may have made ffirst I will and direct that
after my funeral expenses servants wages and all my just debts shall
have been paid that the remainder of whatever property I may die
possessed be disposed of as follows Second as my two sons WILLIAM De
MONTE and FFRANCIS BRYAN have been provided for and my three daughters
EMILY LOUISA, MARY and HARRIET FRANCES married it is my will that they
do not participate in equal proportions with the others of my ffamily in
the property of which I may die possessed but as hereinafter mentioned
Third I give and bequeath to my Son WILLIAM DE MONTE my Diamond Brooch
Hair Chain and ring I now daily wear ffourth I give and bequeath to my
Son FFRANCIS BRYAN my double cased Gold watch made by Barrand Chain and
key in daily use together with my Gold seal with my family arms fifth I
give and bequeth to my Son STEPHEN DUIL my Gold repeater and Equipage
thereto belonging Sixth To my Daughters EMILY LOUISA, MARY and HARRIET
FRANCES I give and bequeath to each the choice of any out of my Jewels
the rest and residue of my Jewels I hereby will and direct to be divided
equally according to value then between my Daughters EMILY LOUISA,
GEORGINA MARY and HARRIET FRANCES Seventh the rest residue and remainder
of my property I desire may be divided between my Daughter GEORGINA and
my Son STEPHEN DUIL to the extent of ten thousand Rupees each the
residue in equal proportions between my seven children or as may be
living at the time of my death the share of my Son STEPHEN DUIL to be
paid to him on his attaining the age of twenty one yaers or for his
promotion in life as may seem fit to my Executors the interest of such
his hare to be applied towards his education and the proportion to my
Daughter GEORGINA as soon as Executors can realize my Estate the
principal to be secured in trust and the interest as it arises to be
paid to my said Daughter and it is my will and desire that upon the
marriage of my said Daughter GEORGINA that the share of my property to
which she is entitled under this my will shall be settled upon her and
the Children of such marriage free from the control of her Husband and
that in case of my said daughter dying before her Husband without issue
It is my will that the Husband shall enjoy the interest of such money
during the term of his natural life and that upon his death the same
shall revert to and be divided by and between such of my Children or
their Representatives as shall then be living I hereby bequeath to each
of my Executors hereafter named the sum of five pounds sterling for the
purchase of a mourning ring and do appoint my excellent and valued
ffriends EDWARD GORDON Esquire of Madras Merchant and my son in law JOHN
ORR Esq. of the Madras Civil Service Executors to this my will. - GEORGE
LYS /SS/ - Madras 20th January 1831- Signed sealed and delivered where
Stamped Paper is not in use in the presence of J. Savage - J. Flower /
Examined compared and carefully collated with the original will proved
by a Commission from the Supreme Court of Judicature at Madras and
attested to be a true copy - J.Y. Fullerton D. Rg.
Proved at London the 23rd January 1840 before the Worshipful William
Ealverley Curteis Doctor of Laws and surrogate by the Oath of John Orr
Esquire the surviving Executor to whom Administration was granted having
been first duly to Administer.
