James Lumsden, servant to the Countess of
Shaftesbury of Saint Giles 1773
I JAMES LUMSDEN now servant to the Countess of Shaftesbury do hereby
nominate Mr JOHN BURGEN? carpenter to be my sole executor In Trust
for the sale of my Cloathes etc and the payment of my just debts as
undermentioned I leave the said Mr BURGEN three Guineas for his
trouble and also my Suit of second Mourning my plain Hat bob wige
and Great Coat if the Cloaths the Mourning do not suit him I desire
he will accept of four Guineas and let them be sold but he to have
the Hat G Coat and Wig. The Money found at my decease will be put
into his hands by Mrs HOLLAND and my desire is he will pay my debts
as under ~
Mr Douglas & Lambert Taylors facing Mays Buildings St Martins Lane -
£17 11s
Mr Chambers shoe maker in Pall Mall - £4 14s
Mr Sherwood hatter in Conduit Street, about £1 6s
Mr Walls carver in Leicester Square for 2 or 3 small picture Frames,
if he will take anything.
The Cloaths Press in the Steward’s Room is mine with what is in it -
there is also in the Cellar within the pantry 4 old pictures the one
of Fireworks with the picture of a Cottage and figures to be sent
from hence I beg the favor of Mr JOHN COMPTON to dispose of and to
accept of the Shipwreck Chancers? Head and the Sea piece for his
trouble he will give Mr BURGEN the Money the little pictures brings.
My watch is a good one with a new Gilt Case and two seals set in
gold one a large cypher on bloodstone cast above 2 ½ Guineas there
will be found among my Linen a Gold Stock Buckle quite new and a
fine Farthing of Queen Anne. Mr JACOBS my Ladys Silversmith will
advise Mr BURGEN about disposing of the above to the best advantage
when Mr BURGEN has found it convenient to comply with what I have
desired about which ther can be no hurry. What cash remains in his
hands he will divide into three parts and give two parts of it to
Mrs ELEANOR BU?..N to be heard of at Mr FITZPATRICKS the very next
door to this house and tell her I desired as a dying man that she
would not part with it too readily to give her the money at his
house the other part to be returned to Mrs HOLLAND who has my
directions for the disposal of it three Books bound in Blue and Gilt
called the Characteristicks and Dr Clarkes proposed alteration of
the ?..? Prayer will be found in the Cloaths Press within the pantry
to be done up and given to Mrs HOLLAND for Mr ?BOWER?
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 11

In the Name of God Amen I JAMES LUMSDEN do hereby make this my last
will and testament. First I recommend my soul to Almighty God who
gave it humbly hoping for Redemtion from my sins through the Merits
of my Blessed Saviour and redeemer Jesus Christ. I desire to be
buried with only common decency and that the Expence may not, Church
dues and the Ground excepted, much exceed what is mentioned in the
inclosed Memorandum. I request the favor of mr READ to dsitribute
two Guinease to the most necessitous poor after my Funeral. I leave
to Mrs HOLLAND, Mrs LAVENDER, Mr READ and Mr GRAHAM 1 Guinea each in
lieu of a Ring As soom as I am confined to my Bed I beg Mr READ will
take the key of my writing desk and secure what money he finds
about. And when my Funeral charges etc is paid I give what remains
to Mrs HOLLAND for Mr BURGEN.
29 Jan 1773 which day appeared personally Thomas Nowarth of the
parish of Saint George Hanover Square , carpenter and William Mason
of the same parish .. and being severally sworn.... made oath that
they were well acquainted with James Lumsden late of the parish of
Saint Giles... deceased for several years before ... and also with
his manner and character of handwriting ....
This will contained in two Testamentary papers marked No 1 and No 2
was proved at London on the 4 February 1773 ... by the oath of John
Burgen executor named in the said will ...
