The Will of John Love
In the
name of God Amen The nynth Day
of March in the yeare of our
Lord God according to the
English Computation one thousand
six hundred fifty and three I
John Love the elder of the
parish of St Olave in Southwarke
in the County of Surrey Cittizen
and Marchantaylor of London
being sick and weake in body but
of sound and perfect mind and
memory praise be given to
Almighty God for it Doe make and
ordaine this my present
Testament declaring herein my
last Will in manner and forme
following That is to say ffirst
and principally I comend my
Soule into the hands of Almighty
God my maker and creatour and of
his sonne Jesus Christ my only
Saviour and Redeemer by the
merrits of whose most precious
blood death and passion I
stedfastly hope to be saved My
body I comitt to the Earth from
whence it came to be decently
and Christian like brought to
the ground and buried at the
discretion of my Executrix
hereafter named And I doe make
and ordaine Suzan my welbeloved
wife full and sole Executrix of
this my last Will and Testament
Item whereas I am seized in ffee
and in one ffreehold Tenement
now in the tenure of Thomas
Remnant sittuate and being in
the parishe of Godalming in the
County of Surrey And whereas I
am possessed and interested of
and in three Leases Viz one
lease of the house wherein I
dwell and certaine other houses
and Tenements neare thereunto in
the parish of St Olave aforesayd
holden of the Colledge of St
Mary Magdalene Oxford One other
Lease granted by William Copley
Esq of certeine tenements
sittuated at or neare
Battlebridge in the sayd parish
of St Olave And one other lease
granted unto mee by one Richard
Terrey of twoe tenements and a
Garden on the northsyde of
horseydowne in the sayd parish
of St Olave And whereas my
eldest Sonne John Love by one
Bond or Obligation bearing Date
the Day before the Date hereof
is and standeth bound unto mee
in the Sume of one hundred
pounds for Payment of threescore
pounds therein is mentioned to
and for the use of Joseph Love
my younger sonne Now concerning
the sayd ffreehold Tenement and
Lease aforesaid and all other my
Estate whatsoever And alsoe
concerning the said bond soe
made to mee by my sayd sonne
John as aforesayd my mind and
will is And first I doe hereby
declare that the sayd Bond or
Obligation soe made is and was
by speciall Agreement betweene
mee and my sayd Sonne John and
that the threescore pounds
payable upon the same is my free
gift to my sonne Joseph for his
portion and Advancement and for
recompense thereof my Sonne John
as alsoe for his owne portion
and Advancement out of my Estate
I doe first give and bequeath to
the sayd John all the dyeing
kettles and all other the
Utensills and Yimplements used
in the trade of dyeing remayning
and being in and about the
Dyehouse and tenement which the
sayd John holdeth of mee behind
my dwelling house aforesayd And
alsoe my leaden Cistern and all
other my household Stuffe and
Goods whatsoever now in the
possession of the sayd John and
remaining and being in and about
the Tenement and Dyehouse which
he holdeth of mee as aforesaid
And I doe also will that my sayd
Sonne shall hold and enjoy all
that the said Tenement and
Dyehouse and the Yard Backside
Shedds dyeing houses Warehouses
and other Comodities thereunto
belonging and now in his
Occupation francke and free
without payeing any rent for the
same from and after my decease
for and during the life of the
sayd Suzann my wife Item I doe
will that my sayd wife shall
hold and enjoy as well my sayd
Freehold Tenement as alsoe all
and singular the tenements
holden by my sayd Lease other
than what is allotted to my
sonne John aforesayd And the
Rents and profitts to receave
and take to her owne use for and
during the tearme of her
naturall life And shee to pay
the Rents payable to my Landlord
out of the same And from and
after his decease I doe give and
devise my sayd lease which I
hold of the Colledge of St Mary
Magdalen aforesaid And all the
Tenements and premises thereby
demised and all my Estate Title
and Interest of in and to the
same unto my Sonne John Love to
hold to him his Executors and
Assignes for and during all the
tearme and time then to Come in
the sayd Leases And my sayd
other Leases granted by the said
William Copley and Richard
Sorrey and the severall
Tenements and premises thereby
holden from and after the
decease of my sayd wife I doe
give and bequeath to my sayd
Sonne Joseph his Executors and
Assignes to hold during the
severall termes then to come of
the said Leases Item I doe give
and devise to my said Sonne
Joseph my said ffreehold
tenement with the Appurtenances
in the parish of Godalming
aforesayd to hold to him the
sayd Joseph his heires and
Assignes from and after the
decease of my sayd wife provided
alwayes and my will is that my
sayd Wife and sonne shall
permitt and Suffer Elizabeth
Trim my Wive's sister to have
possesse and enjoye the Roome
now in her possession and free
way and passage to and from the
same during her naturall life
without payeing any Rent or
other thing for the same And I
doe further declare my mind and
will to be that the severall
Legacies hereby given to my sayd
Sonnes John and Joseph shall be
for and in full satisfaction of
all such Share part and portion
of my Estate as they or either
of them shall or may Claime or
Challenge by the custome of
London or otherwise enjoyning
them my said Sonnes to be well
contented therewith and as soone
as conveniently may be either of
them to give their mother a
release of all part share and
claime of in and concerning
Estate other than what is hereby
willed or bequeathed unto them
And that they live loveingly and
peaceably with her as in dutey
they ought to doe and that they
be alwaies ayding and assisting
unto her in what they may And
loveing and helpfull one towards
the other which my earnest
desire is that they wilbe
carefull to doe and performe
accordingly The Rest & residue
of all my goods household stuffe
plate readye money Credits
Chattels & Estate whatsoever
after my Debts payed my funerall
expences discharged and the
legacies in this my Will
performed I doe wholly give and
bequeath unto the said Suzann my
Wife whome I make my Executrix
aqs aforesayd And I doe nominate
and appoint my loving freinds
Mathew Hopkins of the Burrough
of Southwarke Dyer and Richard
Paxton of the same Scrivener
Overseers of this my Will
heartily desiring their best
care and assistance to my sayd
Wife and Children for which and
in remembrance of my love unto
them I doe give unto them my
sayd Overseers twenty shillings
a peece Vizt to each of them the
sume of twenty shillings And
lastly I revoke all former Wills
by mee made and none of them to
stand in force but this my will
only In witnesse whereof to this
my last Will and Testament
conteining three sheets of Paper
I have sett my hand and Seale
