Christopher Leedes of
the parish of St. Mary
Magdalen in the City of
Canterbury woolendraper
sick and weak in body
but of good and perfect
memory God be praised do
make and ordain this my
last will and testament
in manner and form
following First and
principally I yield and
render my soul unto
Almighty God the father
the son and the Holy
Ghost my maker redeemer
and sanctifier and my
body to the earth to be
buried in the churchyard
of St Mildred’s in the
City of Canterbury as
near unto the place
where my grandfather
Leeds lieth as
conveniently it may.
Item whereas after the
decease of my loving
mother Joan Phillips I
am to have the sum of
three score pounds of
good and lawful English
money of my said
mother’s gift unto me
which said threescore
pounds is now in the
hands of Mr. John Warham
of Wingham in the County
of Kent Gent I do give
and bequeath the
aforesaid threescore
pounds after my mother’s
decease unto Noe Leedes
my brother.
Item I give unto my good
friend Mr James Master
of the City of
Canterbury a copper
kettle.
Item I give to my said
brother Noe Leedes a
brass pot and a stupnett
to be delivered unto him
at his age of 24 years.
Item I give and bequeath
unto Sibill Haythorne
Elizabaeth Haythorne
Jane Haythorne and Henry
Haythorne the children
of mine aunt Katherine
Haythorne 20 shillings a
piece to be paid to them
and either of them as
they shall severally
accomplish their ages of
24 years by my executors
hereafter named.
Item I give and bequeath
unto Thomas Phillips and
Joanna Phillips the
children of Mr David
Phillips vicar of
Waltham my father-in-law
and of my mother Joan to
either of them £10
apiece to be paid in
manner and form
following that is to say
unto my brother Thomas
Phillips at his age of
21 years and unto my
sister Joanna at her age
of 18 years or day of
marriage which shall
first happen.
Item I give unto my
uncle John Fyshe of the
precinct of the
cathedral and
metropolitan church of
Christ Canterbury the
sum of £10 of good and
lawful English money to
be paid unto him within
four years next after my
decease by my executors
and if my said uncle
shall happen to die
before such time as the
said ten pounds shall
grow due and payable
then the said £10 pounds
to be and remain at the
time aforesaid to his
heirs executors or
administrators.
Item I give unto my
cousin James Leedes of
East Sutton in the
County of Kent clothier
the sum of five pounds
of good and lawful money
of England to be paid
unto him the said James
Leedes within five years
after my decease.
Item I give to John Dale
son of my cousin John
Dale the sum of three
pounds of lawful English
money to be paid unto
him by my executors at
his age of 21 years.
Item I give unto my good
and loving Master
William Whitinge of the
City of Canterbury
woolendraper as a small
remembrance of my
dutiful affection
towards him 40 shillings
and unto my cousin John
Fyshe son of my uncle
John Fyshe aforesaid £5
the which said William
Whitinge my master and
my said cousin John
Fyshe I constitute
ordain and make the only
and sole executors of
this my present last
will and testament and
as touching the
disposition of my lands
and tenement situate and
being in the parish of
St.Mildred’s in the City
of Canterbury this is
the last will and
testament of the
aforesaid Christopher
Leedes.
First I give and
bequeath unto my two
aforenamed executors and
to the longest lived of
them two one annuity or
yearly rent charge of £4
of good and lawful
English money during the
term of the natural life
of my sister Mary Bowman
the now wife of Francis
Bowman to be issuing and
out of my greater
tenement situate and
being in Wincheape in
the parish of St.
Mildred’s in the City of
Canterbury and to be due
and payable quarterly
out of the said tenement
unto my foresaid
executors and if the
said rent charge of £4
by the year shall happen
to be behind and unpaid
in part or in all the
above space of fourteen
days after such time or
times as the same or any
part thereof shall be
due and ought to be paid
that then it shall be
lawful for my aforesaid
executors or their
assigns into my said
greater tenements to
enter and distrain and
the distress or
distresses there so had
and taken to bear drive
and carry away and the
same to keep and
distrain until such time
as the said rent charge
of £4 and the arrears
thereof if any be shall
unto my foresaid
executors or their
assigns be well and
truly satisfied
contented and paid.
Item I give and bequeath
unto my brother Noe
Leedes my two tenements
situate and being in the
street commonly called
Wincheape near and found
without the walls of the
City of Canterbury
together with all the
gardens outhouses and
appurtenances unto them
belonging the greater of
the said tenements being
now in tenure and
occupation of Mr.
William Knight and
commonly known by the
name of the Queen’s Head
and the lesser tenement
being now in the tenure
and occupation of Susan
Dines widow to have and
to hold the said two
tenements together with
all the gardens
outhouses and
appurtanances unto them
belonging unto the said
Noe Leedes at his age of
24 years and unto his
heirs and assigns for
ever And if the said Noe
Leedes shall happen to
decease before he shall
accomplish his said age
of 24 years then I will
and appoint that the
said two tenements shall
be sold by my executors
or the survivor of them
and the money thereof
coming (after my debts
and legacies shall be
paid and discharged to
be divided into two
equal parts the one part
or parts to remain and
be to the children of my
sister Hester deceased
the late wife of David
Drayton if they shall be
then living equally
divided between them and
the other part or parts
to be and remain unto my
sister Mary Bowman the
wife of Francis Bowman
and unto her children if
she shall have any
equally to be divided
between them.
Item I give and bequeath
unto my master William
Whitinge and my cousin
John Fyshe my executors
all the rents issues
profits and revenues of
my foresaid two
tenements until my
brother Noe Leedes shall
attain and come unto his
said age of 24 years
they paying my debts and
legacies and discharging
my funeral expences and
keeping my said two
houses in witness
whereof I the foresaid
Christopher Leedes have
hereto set my hand and
seal the day and year
first above given.
Memorandum that before
the ensealing of this
will the testator did
give and bequeath unto
John Petit(?) the son of
John Petit of Waltham 20
shillings to be paid
unto him at his age of
one and twenty years by
his executors.
