day of January in the
year of our Lord God
1599 I Christopher
Leedes of the parish of
St.Mildred of the City
of Canterbury being
somewhat sickly but yet
of good and perfect
remembrance I thank God
for it do ordain and
make my last will and
testament in manner and
form following That is
to say first and
principally I commend my
soul unto the hands of
Almighty God hoping and
assuredly believing to
inherit the glorious
kingdom of heaven by the
death and bloodshedding
of Christ Jesus my only
saviour and by no other
means and my body I will
shall be buried in the
churchyard of St.Mildred
in Canterbury near to
the place where my wife
lyeth buried.
Item I give unto the
poor people of the City
of Canterbury the sum
of 20s to be distributed
to such as they shall
think meet whom herein I
shall nominate and
appoint executors of
this my will within one
whole year after my
decease.
And touching all such
lands and tenement as I
have within the City of
Canterbury my will is
and I do give unto
Christopher Leedes the
son of Noe Leedes my son
deceased my two
tenements and gardens
and orchards with their
appurtanances lying and
being in a street called
Wincheap within the said
parish of St.Mildred the
City of Canterbury
aforesaid to be had to
him the said Christopher
and to his heirs forever
at his age of 21 years.
Item I give unto Rachel
Leedes alias Dale my
daughter my daughter my
tenement and garden and
orchard with the
appurtanances set and
being in a street called
Stower (Stour) with the
said parish of
St.Mildred in the City
of Canterbury abovesaid
wherein John Jefferys
now dwelleth to be had
unto her within one year
next after my decease.
Item I do give unto Noe
Leedes the son of Noe
Leedes my son deceased
ten pounds of money to
be paid unto him at his
age of 21 years.
Item I do give unto
Hester Leedes and Mary
Leedes daughters unto
Noe Leedes my son five
pounds apiece to be paid
unto them within one
year next after my
decease.
Item I do give more unto
Mary Leedes abovesaid
twentysix shillings and
eightpence yearly during
her natural life issuing
and joining out of my
greater tenement in
Wincheap before given
unto Christopher Leedes
her brother wherein
Henry Nelson now
dwelleth to be paid unto
her quarterly by even
portions that is six
shillings and eight
pence every quarter or
within six days after or
else it shall be lawful
unto and for the said
Mary to enter the said
tenement and to distrain
and for to take a
distress for the same.
Item I do will that
Rachel Dale my daughter
shall have her dwelling
in my lesser tenement in
Wincheap aforesaid and
before given unto
Christopher Leedes
during all her natural
life and further I do
will and my meaning is
that Mary Leedes
aforesaid shall also
have her dwelling in the
tenement so long as she
shall keep herself
unmarried and neither of
them to pay rent for
their said dwelling
during the time
aforesaid they well and
duly keeping the
reparations of the said
tenement and gardens.
Item I do give more unto
Mary Leedes my second
featherbed and bolster
to it and the joined
bedstead whereupon the
said bed now lyeth.
Item I do give unto the
six children of
Katharine Leedes alias
Haythorne my daughter
that is to Christopher
Haythorne Margaret
Haythorne Sibill
Haythorne Henry
Haythorne Elizabeth
Haythorne and Jane
Haythorne twenty pounds
of money equally divided
between them by even
portions that is to
either of them three
pounds six shillings 4
pence to be paid unto
Christopher Haythorne
within two years next
after my decease and to
Margaret Haythorne
within two years next
after my decease or
before if she shall
happen to be married and
to the other four at
their several ages of
eighteen years.
Item I do give unto John
Fyshe son unto John
Fyshe my son in law my
silver and gilt
saltseller with a cover
and my great andirons
which are now in his
fathers occupying to be
had unto the said John
Fyshe at the age of
twenty and six years.
Item I do give more unto
Christopher Leedes
aforesaid all such
moveable goods as are
mine and now in my
greater tenement in
Wincheap and in the
occupation of Henry
Nelson whereof the said
Christopher hath an
inventory more I give
unto him my greatest
brass pot and my copper
kettle to be had unto
him at the age of 21
years. The residue of
all my goods and
chattels whatsoever my
debts and legacies being
first paid and contented
I give them wholly unto
John Fyshe my son in law
and Elnor his wife which
John and Elnor I do make
constitute nominate and
appoint executors of
this my last will and
testament and I do also
nominate and appoint
Jasper Wreake overseer
of the execution of the
same and for his pains I
do give unto him twenty
shillings these being
witnesses,
