the name of God Amen the
six and twentieth day of
January one thousand six
hundred and seventeen I
Steven Leedes of
Benenden in the County
of Kent yeoman being
sick in body but of good
and perfect memory
thanks be given to
Almighty God do make and
ordain this my last will
and testament in manner
following First I give
and commend my soul into
the hands of the
Almighty fully assured
by the death and
mediation of Jesus
Christ to have full and
perfect remission of all
my sins and my body to
the earth out of which
it was framed.
Item I give to the poor
inhabitants of Benenden
20 shillings of lawful
money of England to be
paid by mine executor
herein afternamed.
Item I give unto my
three godchildren
Lawrence Wyllard Anthony
Welles and Agnes Girdler
to either of them 3/4d a
year and to all the rest
of my godchildren 2/- a
year to be paid by mine
executors within one
year next after my
decease.
Item I give Margery Day
2/- all the rest of my
moveable goods
whatsoever my debts and
legacies paid and my
funeral duties
discharged I give and
bequeath unto my sister
Elizabeth’s three sons
George Goldinge Richard
Goldinge and Steven
Goldinge which three I
make the only executors
of this my last will and
testament and my will
and mind is that these
mine executors before
they intermeddle with my
lands and goods shall
enter into sufficient
bonds either to each
other to perform my
mind and meaning herein
contained which if any
one of them shall refuse
to do my will and mind
is that he or they so
refusing shall have no
portion or part either
in my lands or goods.
Item I give to my two
sisters Dorothy Basden
and Thomasin Girdler to
either of them 6s/8d a
year.
This is the last will
and testament of me the
said Steven Leedes made
and declared the day and
year above written
touching all my lands
and tenements in the
parish of Benenden in
the county of Kent
Item I give and bequeath
all that my messuage or
tenement and all the
lands and woods
thereunto belonging now
in occupation of Robert
Sharpye and also all
those my lands and woods
lying in the west end of
Benenden and now in the
occupation of Robert
Burre all which
aforesaid messuage and
all the lands
aforementioned with all
singulars appurtanances
I give and bequeath unto
my aforesaid Elizabeth’s
three sons George
Goldinge Richard
Goldinge and Steven
Goldinge and to their
heirs in fee simple for
ever on this condition
that they the said
George Richard and
Steven or their heirs
executors administrators
or assigns or some of
them shall well and
truly content and pay
unto the four children
of Henry Goldinge their
brother deceased four
score pounds of lawful
money of England which
by this my last will I
give and bequeath unto
them that is to say
George Goldinge and to
Henry Goldinge sons of
the deceased Henry to
either of them thirty
pounds a year to be paid
unto them by mine
executor when as the
shall come to their
several ages of one and
twenty years and my will
and mind is that either
of them depart this life
before they come to
their several ages of
one and twenty years
then the survivor shall
receive and enjoy his
deceased brother’s part.
Item I give and bequeath
unto Elizabeth Goldinge
and Agnes Goldinge
daughters of the
aforesaid deceased Henry
to either of them ten
pounds a year of lawful
money of England to be
paid by mine executors
when as they shall come
to their several ages of
eighteen years and if
either the said
Elizabeth or Agnes do
depart this life before
they come to the age
aforesaid then my will
and mind is that the
survivor shall receive
and enjoy the deceased’s
part.
Item I give and bequeath
unto Agnes Allin my
kinswoman forty
shillings a year of
lawful money of England
quarterly to be paid by
even and equal portions
during the natural life
of the said Agnes and no
longer.
