The Will of James Leedes
 

In the name of God Amen the 18th day of August 1626 I James Leedes of Goudhurst in the county of Kent shoemaker being sick in bidy but of a good and perfect memory thanks be to God therefore do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following  viz. first I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God my only maker hoping assuredly of my salvation by the only merits of Jesus Christ my saviour and redeemer and my body I commit to the earth at the discretion of my executor.

Item I give and bequeath unto George Leedes my son my cupboard and a table with the forms to it and two forms to it and a low chest being all in my hall and my best bedstead with the other bedstead in the Owtlett with all bedding belonging to them with a joined chest standing at the bed’s feet and 4 firkins.

Item I give unto Mildred Questenbury the daughter of my daughter Jane the bedstead wherein I do usually lie and the truckle bedstead wherein she doth usually lie with all the bedding thereon lying with the  hanging bolsters pillows coverlets blankets and ropes thereto belonging and 4 pairs of my best sheets and my best green coverlet lying in the chest with my best joined chest a copper cauldron and my best brass stupnet (stew pan) 3 firkins lying at Goodwife Fishendens my best brewing tub and my best keeler (cooler) 6 of my best trugs my new brass kettle and an iron kettle a pair of my best pillowcoats a seamed sheet the half of all my pewter and an iron cobiron.

Item I give to Rebecca Cropwell my daughter’s daughter a great chest standing in the outward chamber.

Item I will that my executor shall pay unto Mr Thomas Lake of Goudhurst within half a year next after my decease forty shillings of lawful money of England to be by him bestowed towards the placing forth of the said Rebecca in some good service.

Item I give unto Joan my daughter twelve pence to be paid to her being lawfully demanded the residue of all and singular my moveable goods before not willed given or bequeathed my debts legacies and funeral expences being first paid and discharged I give and bequeath unto the foresaid George Leedes my son whom I make and ordain my full and whole executor of this my last will and testament and I do nominate and appoint the foresaid

M. Thomas Lake to be overseer of this my will.  James Leeds his mark witnesses hereunto Thomas Lake Sen.   Thomas Lake Jun.
