The Will of John Ledis
In the name of god Amen the 2nd
day of March in the year of our
Lord 1534 I John Ledis of the
parish of Ikham in the county of
Kent whole of mind & of good
remembrance make my last will &
testament in form & manner as
followeth First I bequeath my
soul to Almighty God and to the
whole company of heaven and my
body to be buried in the church
of Ikham. And for my tythes or
offerings negligently forgotten
I bequeath to the high alter 3s
4p and to the repairs of the
church of Ikham or to any other
thing therein to be done by the
advice of the church wardens and
other of the said parishes. I
bequeath £10 And to the
repairing of or mending of the
Highway called Charbyll Lane I
bequeath £20 and for my soul’s
health I will that my executors
do for my soul the day of my
burying design 12 masses in the
Church of Ikham. And at my
months mind in the said church
desire 30 masses And likewise at
my years mind dirge and 30
masses. And then after the said
years mind I will that in other
10 years end yere be done for my
souls with remembrances of my
father & mother Geffrey & Alyce
dirge 5 masses in the said
church of Ikham And then to be
remembered the souls Of Thomasin
my wife & her children And to
the sons of God & Saint John the
Evangelist I will there be
bought by my Executors a cloth
for the cross in processions On
high days the price of the cross
cloth to be £20 or better but no
less price And for the repairing
or mending of the changing or
making of the bells. I bequeath
13s 4d To my daughter Julyan I
bequeath £20 also a brass pot of
4 gallons a ship chest 2
platters a saucer and a basin
and the said sum to be paid at
my years mind. To Alyce my
daughter to her marriage I
bequeath £20 a latten basin a
chafing dish 2 candlesticks of
pewter 6 plates a spit a brass
pot of 5 gallons a chest the
greater of that be in my parlour
a stuppy(stupnet) of brass a
chafer of brass the less brass
pot A cupboard with an almeyne a
sheet named a christening sheet
a table cloth of dynper the best
pillow Also a kettle of 2
gallons or more And of all other
stuff not bequeathed if she
desire any part thereof I will
that she have it Also to her I
give my featherbed the silver &
taper the Blankets 2 pair of
sheets and the coverlet also of
7 silver spoons I will the said
Alyce have 4 of them. To Elinor
my daughter the wife of Henry
Dale
I bequeath
in money £20 which I will be
delivered & paid unto her at my
years mind.
To Alice the daughter of my son
John Ledis I bequeath & give £5
also a brass pot of 3 gallons A
great Kervy(heavy) chest a pair
of sheets a candlestick a plate
& saucer. To Eden the daughter
of my said son John Ledis I
bequeath & give 5 marks and if
any of his 2 daughters die
before the age of 23 years I
will that the said childs part
be given wholly & all to the
longer liver And if none of them
live to the time of 23 years of
age then I will the said sum of
money thus willed unto the rest
& remaining the disposing of my
executors.
To Elizabeth my daughter the
wife of William Webb I give &
bequeath in money £5 A great
brass pot of 8 gallons and also
a silver & a tester with 3
curtains of white and all other
moveable stuff in my house not
bequeathed I will she have it if
both executors be willing
thereto and to her I five 3
silver spoons and the said sum
of money to be delivered & paid
to her at my years mind Also to
Jane Finlay servant to William
Webb I bequeath In money 13s 4p
to be paid at my year mind To
William Webb and to his wife
Elizabeth my daughter I give &
bequeath my tenement in Ikham
parish with 3 yards of land
lying or being in Cottman field
and also
A plot of
pasture in Ikham parish named
Horseleese and more over to him
My obytt as it is beforesaid the
space of 10 years with dirge & 5
masses any year after my decease
I will & give to the said
William Webb the smith forge in
Ikham Street with all the tools
and implements belonging thereto
and if the yearly form thereto
the said William Webb or his
assigns shall find And do that
my yearly obytt be kept and
Performed the span of the said &
years With dirge & 5 massess in
the church of Ikham as it is
beforesaid And if There be any
change of my good money or Money
worth left beyond my bequests My
debts paid & my will performed I
will that my executors bestow it
as they shall think best for my
souls health and for this my
last will to be performed I
order & make my executors
William Webb of Ikham Parish and
Alice Ledis my daughter. An the
overseer of the same I ordain &
make Mr John Frankens & Mr John
Gason the Elder Of the parish of
Ikham. And I give and bequeath
to each of them for their labour
