I John Lede of the
parish of Benenden being
whilst in perfect mind
make my testament and
last will in form
following First I
bequeath my soul to
Almighty God and unto
all the saints of heaven
and my body to be buried
in the churchyard of
saint George of Benenden
aforesaid also I ordain
and bequeath to the high
alter there for my
tithes and offering
forgotten and
negligently witholden
12d.
Item I ordain to the
light of our lady a
taper price 4d. to burn
as long as he will
endure.
Item I will and ordain
to Thomas Lede my son
all my lands and set
lying and being in the
parish of Benenden
aforesaid other
elsewhere in the county
of Kent under this
condition that is to say
that the said Thomas his
heirs executors and
assigns pay or cause to
be payed to John Lede my
son 10 marks to be fully
paid to the said John to
his heirs or assigns
within a year of my
decease.
Item I will the said
Thomas shall pay or
cause to be payed to
Christopher Lede my son
10 marks to be payed to
the said Christopher to
his heirs or assigns
within 2 years next
after my decease.
Item I will the said
Thomas shall pay to
James Lede my son 10
marks to be payed to the
said James to his heirs
or assigns within 3
years next after my
decease.
Item I will the said
Thomas shall pay to
Richard Lede my son 5
marks to be payed to the
said Richard to his
heirs or assigns within
4 years after my
decease.
Item I will the said
Thomas shall pay to
Edward Lede my son 5
marks to be payed to the
said Edward to his heirs
or assigns within 5
years next after my
decease.
Item I will the said
Thomas shall pay or
cause to be paid to
Harry Lede my son 5
marks to be paid to the
said Harry to his heirs
within 6 years of my
decease.
Also I will that the
said Thomas shall pay of
cause to be payed to
Alice and Joan my
daughters 5 marks to
either of them (end of
page 1) to be paid at
the day of their
marriage and if it
happen the said Alice or
Joan to die before they
be married then I will
the one to be the others
heir and if it happen
they both to die before
they marry then I will
the said money to them
bequeathed to an honest
priest to sing on the
said church of Benenden
by the space of a year
for my soul my wifes
soul and for all
Christian souls.
Item I will and bequeath
to John Lede the son of
Bartholomew Lede 13s 4d.
to be payed to the said
John when he cometh to
the age of 20 years.
Also I will and bequeath
to Margaret Lede the
daughter of William Lede
15s 3d. to be paid at
her marriage.
Item I bequeath
Elizabeth Robert my God
daughter 4d.
Item to Elizabeth
Kechenoure 4d.
Item to John Lede the
son of Richard Lede 12d.
item I bequeath to
Thomas Lede, John Lede,
Gregory Lede the sons of
Christopher Lede a cow
provided always if it
happen the aforesaid
Edward Lede or Harry
Lede my said sons to die
without heirs of their
bodies lawfully begotten
before the time of
payment of the aforesaid
money to them before
assigned then I will and
brother to be others
heirs.
Also I will and bequeath
to Alice Lede and Joan
Lede my said daughters
all my stuff of
household except my
great cauldron and all
my tubb the which I will
remain to Thomas my son.
Item I bequeath to Joan
Webbe my servant a cow
the best I have.
Item I bequeath to John
Lede my son my best gown
my best doublet and my
best hose.
Item I BEQUESTH TO
Richard Lede my next
best gown.
Item I bequeath to Joan
Lede the daughter of the
said Richard Lede a
kettle and a pair of
(may be canvass shoes or
sheets).
Item I bequeath to the
buying of a mass book to
serve in the church of
Benenden 12d.
Item I bequeath to Alice
my daughter my baking
yerne (i.e. baking
irons).
Item I bequeath to Joan
my daughter an old
chest.
Also I will that John
Sharpe Richard Sharp and
John Willard me
feoffiers shall deliver
my said land and
tenenment with
appurtances to the said
Thomas Lede my son at
any time (end page 2)
after my decease so that
the said Thomas find
sufficient surety to my
said feoffers for the
payment of the abovesaid
money to my said sons
before assigned the said
residue of all my goods
not bequeathed or
assigned my debts and
bequests first paid I
bequeath it to
Christopher Lede and
Thomas Lede my sons the
which Christopher Lede
and Thomas Lede I make
and ordain mine
executors of this my
present will. This
witnessed by Sir John
Clerk parish priest of
Benenden John Sharpe
William Woodland and
Edward Lede.
