In the Name of God Amen I WILLIAM KIPLING of
Bowes in the County of York do make and publish this my Last Will
and Testament in manner following First I give and devise and
bequeath unto my son WILLIAM KIPLING and his heirs the following
lands that is to say two Low Fields and one High Field now occupied
by John Whitfield as also the allotment of land in the West Pasture
and on the Moor of Common I likewise give to my son WILLIAM the
house I live in after the decease of my wife his mother and also a
house on the south side of the Town Street of Bowes called Jenny
House with the garth or Croft ... chargeable with one annuity or
Rent Charge of £40 a year to be paid by him to my wife during her
natural life by half yearly payments of £20 each the first payment
to be made within the space of one calendar month after my decease
and the second payment after six months .... But it is my will and
mind ... and I do direct that if my son WILLIAM should happen to
die without issue ... then the above messuage lands and tenements
.... shall be equally divided amongst my three other sons (viz)
THOMAS ROBERT and RICHARD KIPLING share and share alike ..... Next I
give and bequeath unto my said son WILLIAM KIPLING and my said son
RICHARD KIPLING .. the lands called Hutchinson's and Wilkinson's
Pastures ... but if my son WILLIAM die without issue ...... to be
equally divided amongst my three other sons (viz) THOMAS ROBERT and
RICHARD KIPLING share and share alike ..... I also give devise and
bequeath unto my son THOMAS KIPLING one Low Field now occupied by
William Copeland and lands called the Rigg now tenanted by James
Alderson together with the dwelling house now occupied by Charles
Sayer I likewise give and devise and bequeath unto my son ROBERT
KIPLING .. lands called the Ings and Mire Kells and the dwelling
house now occupaied by Mr Parker..... I likewise give and devise and
bequeath unto my son RICHARD KIPLING .... the farm called Under
Killmonds now occupied by William Bailey as tenant I likewise give
and devise and bequeath unto my daughter HANNAH KIPLING all the land
and houses now in the occupation of William Bayles as tenant I give
and bequeath unto my Dear and loving wife over and above the yearly
rent charge of £40 ... the free use and enjoyment of the house I
live in for her life together with the garden ... I likewise leave
her the use and enjoyment of all my household furniture plate and
linen .... and after my wife's decease the household furniture and
linen be equally divided between my two daughters MARGARET JACKSON
and HANNAH KIPLING share and share alike to my son in law Mr JACKSON
of Lartington £5. All the rest and residue of my Real and personal
estate ... I give and devise unto my dear loving wife and my son
WILLIAM KIPLING and I do appoint them joint executors of this my
Last Will and Testament revoking all other wills by me made In
witnesses whereof I have hereby set my hand and seal this 25 August
1777
