The Will of Bartholomew Keeling
I Bartholomew Keeling
Rector of Tiffield in the County of
Northampton being in good health and sound
Mind and considering the uncertainty of Life
do make appoint and constitute this my last
Will and Testament in manner following
revoking hereby and making void all former
Wills at any time by me made at any time
ffirst I give and bequeath the sum of ffive
pounds to each of the three persons next
undernamed that is to say to Sarah Wesley
the Wife of Shadrach Wesley of this my
parish of Tiffield Elizabeth Wesley their
Daughter and Robert Curtis the Elder of
Tiffield aforesaid I also give and bequeath
the like sum of ffive pounds to my Servant
if he shall be in my Service at the time of
my decease I also give and bequeath to my
Maid Servant Hannah Wadley the sum of Twenty
Pounds and for both my aforesaid two
servants if they shall continue in my
Service for a space of time competent and
considerable enough and approve themselves
useful and worthy I intend to make further
provision I give and bequeath to my late
Servant William Pratt a Guinea I also give
and bequeath to my Cousin Mary Carlile of
the City of Coventry Twenty Pounds and to
her Son Keeling Joyce of the said City the
sum of Twom Hundred Pounds and to each of
her other children two guineas All the
aforesaid Legacies to be due and payable at
the expiration of one year to be computed
from the day of my decease i give and
bequeath to the aforesaid Elizabeth Wesley
the Daughter of Shadrach Wesley and Sarah
Wesley of Tiffield aforesaid of whose good
Understanding and ingenious and amiable
Disposition as I have a well grounded
Opinion and very favourable Sentiments I
Trust she will continue worthy of being
distinguished by my particular regard and by
a timely becoming Exemplary and Christian
Religious Life and Conduct verify my good
Opinion of her and do Credit to my
Liberality towards her in order to the
advancing of her Condition I give and
bequeath I say unto the said Elizabeth
Wesley the Sum of ffive hundred pounds which
said sum of ffive hundred pounds my Will and
discretion is shall be reserved and well and
sufficiently secured to her and for her Use
and Benefit by my Executors acting under
this ,y Will until the first day of January
which shall be in the Year of Our Lord one
thousand seven hundred and ninety five and
then be paid unto her the said Elizabeth
Wesley together with the Interest thereof
that shall have grown Due from the time of
my decease But in case of the decease of her
father Shadrach Wesley before the said year
of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and
ninety five then and also in case of any
Extraordinary and Just reasonable exigency
and Occasion not otherwise or without such
exigency during her Father's Life time my
Will is that upon her request and
application the Interest thereof shall be
paid her as it shall become due before her
Father's decease or before such
extraordinary and Just and reasonable
Occasion for her requesting and applying for
it and the said Elizabeth Wesley shall also
have power to dispose of the said Sum of
ffive hundred pounds by her Will or
appointment as she shall think fit as she
shall have attained to such Age as renders
capable by Law of making and executing a
Will in case of her decease before the Term
or time at which the same is ordered to be
paid to her I Also give and bequeath unto
the said Elizabeth Wesley the six Chairs
with blue ornamented Camblet Seats and
likewise the Oaken Chest of Drawers and the
looking Glass usually standing on the large
Chest of Drawers in my own Bed Chamber and
also the Bureau vineered with Ash in the
same Bed Chamber and the Chest of Drawers
standing by my Bedside and the small glazed
Chest or Cabinet now or usually kept in the
light Closet within my said Bed Chamber and
the large Chest of Drawers standing in two
several parts in the two best Garretts and
also all my Tables Chairs and Trays made of
either Mahogney or Wallnut Wood and the
small Mahoganey stand occasionally used for
setting a Dish or Plate upon at Dinners and
any one of my Corner Cupboards and of the
looking Glasses in the Parlours which she
shall make choice of And the Dutch Tea
Kettle and Lamp and the Prints of the
History of Don Quixote with the fframes and
Glasses thereunto belonging and the Prints
in the little Parlour with the fframes and
Glasses I also Will and order that all such
Books shall be given and delivered to her
the said Elizabeth Wesley as shall appear to
have been designed and allotted for her by
any Writing under my Hand I also further
give and devise to the said Elizabeth Wesley
and the Heirs of her Body lawfully begotten
and for default of such then to her and her
Heirs and Assigns forever all that part or
portion of my Estate in this my Parish of
Tiffield in the County of Northampton as is
described in and by the Will asnd Testament
of ffrances Gilbert late of Tiffield
aforesaid Widow Signed Sealed Published and
declared by the said ffrances Gilbert as
such on the ffourteenth day of April which
was in the year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and forty nine in and by the
Words next following that is to say All
those my two Messuages or Tenements with the
Appurtenances situate in Tiffield aforesaid
and also all those my several Pieces or
Parcels of Arable Land Ley Meadow and
Pasture Ground lying and being dispersed in
the Common and Open ffields of Tiffield
aforesaid and also all those two Closes
situate lying and being in Tiffield
aforesaid commonly called or known by the
Name of the Wood Closes all which said
Premises were lately in the Tenure or
Occupation of Robert Goodspeed and now of
Richard Curl his Undertenants or Assigns and
were purchased by John Gilbert my late
Husband deceased of Robert Neale Knight and
Cockerill or some or one of them and were
given and devised to me by the last Will of
my late Husband and all which said Premises
(excepting the Spinney adjoining to the
Homestaed which said Spinney hath been and
is in my own Occupation and is intended to
be included and comprised in the devise of
this part of my Estate to the said Elizabeth
Wesley) have been since the decease of the
said ffrances Gilbert in the occupation of
the aforesaid Richard Curl then of William
Garlick Calvert then of John Bailey then of
John Whitton and now of Shadrach Wesley
ffather of the said Elizabeth Wesley
successively the House belonging thereto now
being inhabited by Thomas Pratt Blacksmith
as Undertenant to the said Shadrach Wesley
But I charge these premises with the Payment
of an Annuity or Yearly Sum of Ten Pounds
out of the Rents and Profits thereof to
Sarah Wesley the Mother of the said
Elizabeth Wesley in case of her surviving
her Husband Shadrach Wesley for and during
the Term of the natural Life of the said
Sarah Wesley the first payment to be made at
the Expiration of one Year to be computed
from the date of the decease of her said
husband Shadrach Wesley I give and devise
unto Brook Bridges Clerk Rector of
Kislingbury in the County of Northampton all
that my Manor of Tiffield aforesaid in the
County of Northampton and all and every my
Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditaments
and Real Estate not hrein before devised
with the Appurtenances situate lying and
being in the Parishes of Tiffield and
Towcester or elsewhere in the County of
Northampton To have and to hold to the said
Brook Bridges for and during the Term of his
natural Life and from and after his Decease
I give and devise the same Premises to
Margaretta Bridges the youngest Daughter of
the said Brook Bridges and Elizabeth Wesley
aforesaid Daughter of Shadrach Wesley and
Sarah Wesley of Tiffield aforesaid and to
the Survivor of them But I do charge this my
said Estate also with the Payment of an
Annuity or Yearly Sum of Ten Pounds to Sarah
Wesley the Wife of Shadrach Wesley of the
Parish of Tiffield for and during the Term
of her natural Life in case of her Survivng
her said Husband Shadrach Wesley and
becoming a Widow the said Annuity to
commence and be payable from the day of the
decease of the said Shadrach Wesley in like
manner as another Annuuity of the like sum
hereinbefore mentioned and continue payable
from that time whether the decease of the
said Shadrach Wesley shall happen during the
possession of the said Brook Bridges or of
the said Margaretta Bridges and Elizabeth
Wesley until the decease of the said Sarah
Wesley And I give and bequeath unto each of
my Executors hereinafter named who shall Act
as such under my Will the Sum of one Hundred
Pounds And all the Rest and Residue of my
Estate and effects whatsoever not
hereinbefore disposed of and which shall not
be found to have been otherwise disposed of
by some future Codicil or Codicils to be
divided equally between my Executors acting
as such under this my Will And I do hereby
constitute and appoint the aforesaid Brook
Bridges Rector of Kislingbury in the County
of Northampton and Michael Clare Rector of
Maidford in the same County Executors of
this my Will requesting them to act as such
