The will of John Joplin of Cragg - Cragg is a
bit vague, but it is near Lartington in Teesdale, and within the
parish of Romaldkirk in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The family at
Lartington Hall were Roman Catholic so I wonder if the reference to
the priest is a RC priest ?
In the Name of God Amen I JOHN JOPLIN of Cragg
in the North Riding of Yorkshire being weak in body but sound in
mind and memory do make this my last will and testament as followeth
.... I order that my just debts shall be paid out of my real and
personal estate by my executors JOHN HUNTER of Cotherston and
WILLIAM HOGGET of Cragg. I give and bequeath unto Mr Bradsha [sic]
priest at ?Cyff? in the North Riding of the County of Yorkshire my
silver watch and best Blue Sute of Cloths and my Lin shifts and
allso I give unto the aforesaid Mr Bradsha £2 12s a year during his
natural life. I allso give and bequeath unto my heir at law £5. I
also give and bequeath unto my other relations next the heirs the
sum of £10 equally to be divided amongst them share and share alike.
I allso give unto WILLIAM son of THOMAS and JANE SMITH £10 which
shall be paid when he attains 21 years. I allso give and bequeath £5
amongst the other five children of the aforesaid THOMAS and JANE
SMITH equally to be divided ... and all the real and coppyhold
estates I have at Startforth and Barnard Castle, at Bowes Cow Close
and at Cragg I give and devise the same unto the aforesaid JOHN
HUNTER and WILLIAM HOGGETT ... and all the rest residue and
remainder ... I give and devise and bequeath unto my executors named
above .... In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal
this 3rd January 1784
