The Will of Joan Jenkins - Including Inventory

Summary:

Testator:                          Joan Jenkins (1), widow of Bremill, Wiltshire

Daughter and son-in-law: Joan (2) and John Tompson her husband

Son and overseer:            Richard Jenkins (3), clerk, of Frome Selwood

Daughters and executrixes:        Jane, Margaret and Elizabeth Jenkins (4)

Stepson and overseer:      Robert Jenkins (5) of Melksham

Stepdaughters:                 Anne, wife of Robert Haxy, and Mary Jenkins (6)

Signed:                            3 January 1690

Witnesses:                       Henry Willen and Francis Edmonds

Probate:                          Granted 20 October 1693 to the executrixes by John Wilson

Notes:

  1. Testatrix was the second wife and widow of Robert Jenkins (1602-1670), gent, of Bremhill, Wiltshire;

  2. Testatrix’s eldest daughter Joan was baptized at Bremill in 1644 and married John Tompson there in 1681;

  3. Testatrix’s son Richard was Vicar of Frome Selwood (now simply Frome), Somerset, from 1672 until his death in 1702; he married and had twelve children;

  4. Testatrix’s younger daughters Jane (b 1650), Margaret (b 1652) and Elizabeth (b 1657) were apparently all unmarried at her death;

  5. Robert Jenkins (1636-1716) was the only son of testatrix’s husband by his first wife Katherine Salmon (1612-1639); in the will he is called son-in-law which was acceptable at this time for a stepson, but is now considered incorrect;

  6. Anne Haxy (b 1634) and Mary Jenkins (b 1638), daughters of testatrix’s husband by his first wife, are called daughters-in-law in the will, but in modern parlance are stepdaughters.
