The Will of Dame Dorothy Horsey

 

In the name of god: amen  the ffive and twentiethe daye of October in the one and thirtiethe yere of the Raiyn of oure Soueraiyne Ladie Elizabethe by the grace of god Quene of England ffrance and Irelande Deffender of the ffaithe  I Dame Dorothye Horsey widowe late wife of Sir John Horsey knight Deceased beinge sicke in bodie but of good and perfect memorye god be thanked therfore Do make this my laste will and testamt in manner and forme as followethe:  ffirste I bequeathe unto Allmightie god my Soule withe full assurance and perfect hope of a joyfull resurrection and my bodie yf I Dye in Dorsetshire to be buried at Sherbourne in the Isle? of Sir John Horseye my late husband yf in Sommersetshire to be buried in the tombe of Sir George Speake my firste husband in whitetarkington? church Requyringe to have my ffuneralle solemnized in comely manner without anie pompe.  Item I give and bequeathe to my moste Deare and lovinge mother my Ringe with a pointed Diamond.  Item I give to my lovinge Sonne in Lawe Edward Gorge Esquyre one brooch with a blacke Aggate ffower [4] Diamondes and ffower Rubies in yt Allso I bequeathe unto hym my longe Bason and Ewer of Silver all white.   Item I give unto hym my canabie [canopy] of crymsen velvet in the bed chamber with crymsen taffata Quilte bed beddinge hangings wroughte? pillows & all the ffurniture whatsoeuer belongethe to that chamber.  Item I bequeathe to my Lovinge Daughter Elizabeth Chidleigh one paier of borders set with pearles which were myne before I marryed Sir John Horsey.  Allso I bequeathe unto her a Jewell with a Salamander nyne Diamondes and twoe Rubies in hym.  Item I allso give unto her a Jewell for her girdle with a white Aggat twoe Diamondes and twoe Rubies in it and a cluster of pearls at the ende.  Item I gyve unto her one Coller with twelue bigge daizye buttons and also a girdle with ffower and twentie buttons with Daizyes and twoe payer of gould taggs to the same & enameled with white and red.   Item I give unto her one payer of gloves set with the best goulde buttons.  Item I give unto her one Ringe with ffyve pointed and fouer table Diamonds.  Item I give unto her a gowne of playne velvet with tenne Dozen of goulde buttons set with pearle to the same.  Item I give unto her a Dublet of ?? worke with goulde and silver lined with purple taffata and one of my kirtles which she best liketh her Selfe.  Item I bequeathe unto her my cloath bed with the greene rugge and all other ffurniture of Bed and beddinge belonginge to the same in myne owne chamber.  Item I give unto her the hangings of my chamber with clothe chaire and stoole to the same.  Item I bequeath unto my Lovinge Daughter Dorothye Gorge one paier of goulde borders set with pearle which my late husband Sir John Horsey gave me.  Item I give unto her one chayne of goulde set with pearle and filled with pomander which Sir John Horsey gave me.  Item I give unto her one greate cluster of pearls whiche the Lady Margaret Lancany? grace gave me.  Item One bigge tablet with a blacke Agett in yt and nyne great pearles to the same.  Item I give unto her a girdle set with thirtie buttons of goulde set with pearle.  Item I give unto her a payer of goulde tagges enameled with blacke and white.  Item I give unto her a payer of gloves set with goulde buttons.  Item I give unto her a hoope ringe set with twentie Diamonds which was my weddinge ringe to Sir John Horsey.  Item I give unto her one highe bodied gowne of blacke taffata set with tenne Dozen payer of goulde Agletts.?  Item I give unto her one kirtle and Dublet to be taken at her own choise.  Item I bequeathe to my loveinge Daughter in law Elizabethe Speake one payer of braceletts of goulde enameled with blacke and white.  Item I give unto her one Jewell for her necke with a white Saphyre one hundred and three rubies and a cluster of pearls at the end.  Item I give unto her one ?? horne set in goulde to hange at her girdle.  Item I give unto her one girdle with nyne and thirtie goulde buttons and a chayne wounde Abowte upon the girdle and a payer [pair] of goulde taggs to the same.  Item I give to my Daughter Speake One highe bodied gowne of playne velvet set with eighteen Dozen of goulde buttons and a girtle to be chosen by my Daughter Chedleighe.  Item I give to my lovinge Sister Mistress Elizabethe Colbye One rynge with a table Diamond.  Allso one Ringe with an Oppall.  Item I give to my Lovinge Sister Mistress Mary Arnolde One ?? horne with a Diamond set on other side and a pendannte of pearle to the same.  Item I give to her Daughter Edithe Arnolde one tablett of goulde filled with pomander and one Sute of myne Apparrell to be Delivered at my Daughter Chedleighs choise.  Item I give to Marye Chedleighe one of my gentlewomen ffortie poundes in money and a Sute of Apparrell of myne to be Delivered and chosen by my Daughter Chidleighe.  Item I give unto Cerill? Maye a neckelace of white and blacke with a chayne of goulde aboute yt Allso one kirtle and Dublett to be chosen and Delivered by my Daughter Chedleighe.  Item I give unto Jane Baynard one kirtle and Dublet to be Delyvered by my Daughter Chedleighe.  Item I give to Anne Seamer one kirtle and stomacher to be Delivered by my Daughter Chidleighe.  Item I give unto Margaret Groodye my Servante ffive pounds in money.  Item I give unto Margery Bowman my Servante ffive poundes in money.  Item I give unto William Raf? my Servante the beste geldinge I have at the tyme of my Deathe except the blacke geldinge.  Item I give unto my Servante John Arnolde ffortie Shillings.  Item I give unto my Servante Henry Arnolde ffortie Shillings.  Item I give to every one of my Servants men and maydes who Served me before I maryed Sir John Horsey and ar yet my Servants one yeres wages a peece.  Item I give unto every one of my Servants men and maydes which I reteyned Synce I was a widowe laste halfe a yeres wages a peece.  Provided that they whether men or women to whome greater Legaceys ar given before shall not receyve either yere or halfe yere wages.  Item I give all my peticoates kirtles Lynnen apperteyninge to my bodie and my other apparrell of myne and whatsoever belongeth to the same that is not allreadie bequeathed unto Elizabeth Chisley Dorothie Gouge and Elizabeth Speake to be equally Distributed betwene them.  Item I give unto John Chidleigh Robert Chidleighe Bridgett Chidleighe Dorothie Chidleighe and Dorothie Gorge an hundred poundes a peece to be paied with as convenyent Spede as myne Executor can do for theire better maintenance in theire ffather his absence.  And allso I will that the portion given to Mary Chidleighe my gentlewoman be paied within one yere after my Deathe at the fartheste.  Item I give to goodwife Chi?e widowe tenne Shillings.  Item I give to goodwife Gardener widowe ffive Shillings.  Item I give and bequeathe to the parishe churche of Horsleye Mescomb? twentie Shillings To the poore parishoners of whittarkinton forty shillings.  Item I give unto Person [Parson] Arnolde my Rynge with the paynted Turkes?  Item I gyve unto Mistris Byngham Mistris Burkley John Arnolde his wife and Person Arnolds wife to every of them One Rynge enameled red and blacke.  Item I will that the ?? ?? the payer of virginalls the Dozen of ffruite trenchers? with the barley be all restored to my Sonne in Lawe George Speake and any other thinge ?? that he can ?? Demannde.  Item I give to John Popham Esquyer her mate Attorney generall one greyhounde of Silver holding an Acorne for Salte. unto my lovinge Sonne in Lawe George Tremharde Esquyre one of my nests? of biggest Guylfe bowles with the cover.  unto John Williams Esquyre one bowle of the same Neste. unto John ffitziames [Fitzjames] Esquyer the thirde Bowle of the same Neste. unto william Gibbes Esquyer a Bowle of the Same ffashion and biggnes to be boughte and Delivered ?? unto Edward ?? Esquyer one other bowle of the same fashion and bignes to be bought and Delyvered hym.  All which Sixe gentlemen before named togither [together] with my Sonne in Lawe Edward Gorge Esquyer I make myne overseers of this my laste will and testament Desiring them to be Ayders and Assistannts unto my Sonne Hugh Speake whome I make myne whole Executor unto whome I give and bequeathe all other my goodes moueable and unmoueable not bequeathed before whatsoever.  And the better to put hym in mynde of his Dutie to god and the greate loue I beare to hym I Do give unto hym my Rynge with a Rubie and Sixe Diamonds that behouldinge the same he maye the better remember this beforesayed.  And in witness that this is my laste will and testament I the aforenamed Dame Dorothie Horsey have set to my hande and seale the Daye and yere firste abovewritten Dorothie Horsey

Theise beinge witnesses unto this her laste will whose names ar hereunder written John ffitziames George Tremhard E Gorge John williams willm Arnolde Thomas Hesopps  Item I give unto George Chidleighe the eldeste Sonne of my Daughter Chidleighe One Bason and Ewer of Silver of ffortie pounde pryce to be Delivered to hym at the age of One and twentie.  Item I give unto Joane ffoster myne every Dayce gowne and twentye or thirtie Shillinges in money.  Item I give unto Dorothie John Cooke my Servante his Daughter ffortie Shillings.  Item I give to the poor people of Horsey Mefromes? twentie shillings.  George Tremhard E Gorge willm Arnolde  Memorand that theise laste bequests above written under the witnesses to the will nowe set Downe in wrytinge more then an houer after the Deathe of the saied Ladie Horsey by the Requests of the righteseer? ?? full Mr Tremhard Mr John ffitziames and Mr Gorge after the will was opened and read unto them and to Mr Hughe Speake abovenamed for the better remembrance only of that which the said Ladie did by worde adde unto the will abovewritten.  And as for the twentie Shillings given to the poore of Mescomb it was the ffree offer of Mr Hughe Sprake because willm Arnold the writer herof founde? hym that she was myndefull of the poore yet gave nothinge to them.
