The Will of Richard Hopkins

 

In the Name of God Amen I Richard Hopkins of Cholsey in the County of Berks Gentleman being somewhat indisposed of Bodily Health but of sound and disposing Mind and Understanding praised be God for the same do make and declare this my Last Will and Testament in Writing in manner and form following First and Principally I commend my Soul unto God who gave it me hoping for eternall Bliss in the Kingdom of Heaven through the above Mouths and Intenssion of my ? Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ and my Body I commit to ye Earth from where it was taken to be devoutly buried at the discretion of my Executor herein after named And as touching such such worldly Estate as the Lord in Mercy hath bestowed upon me I do give and dispose thereof as followeth

Imprimis I order and direct that all my just Debts shall with all possible speed after my Decease be paid and satisfied by my Executor hereinafter named And whereas I being seized or possesed of divers Copy hold or Customary Lands Tenements Hereditaments and premisses lying and being within the Manor of Steventon in the County of Berks and having made a Surrender of all my said premisses avoiding low Custom of ye said Manor To ye life and behooss? of such person or persons and for such life Intents and purposes as I by my Last Will and Testament in Writing to be me duly executed in the presence if three or more credible Witnesses shall direct or appoint Now in pursuence of ye said Surrender and by virtue thereof and of all or any other power to me belonging I do hereby give devise direct comitt and appoint all and every my said Copyhold or Customary Lands Tenements Hereditaments and phinfor? whatsoever situate lying and being in Steventon aforesaid or show how in the County of Berks unto and to the life and Behess? of my blood Son Francis Hopkins his Heirs and Assigns for ever avoiding to the Custom of the said Manor of Steventon In by it? nevertheless and charged and chargeable with the payment of the severall Legacys or sums of money hereinafter named (that is to say) with the payment of the sum of one hundred pounds a piece of lawful money of Great Britain unto my two Sons John Hopkins and Thomas Hopkins and with the payment of the sum of four hundred and fifty pounds of like lawfull money unto my Daughter Martha Hopkins which said sums respectively I do hereby give and bequeath unto my said Sons and Daughter and do order the same to be paid unto them respectively within one year next after my Decease and also with the payment of the sum of one hundred pounds of like lawfull money unto my Grandaughter Mary Baker which said sum I do hereby give and bequeath unto her and do order the same to be paid unto her at the age of one and twenty years if she shall be then living and in Case my said Grandaughter shall happen to dye before she shall attain her said age and shall leave any Brother or Sister living Then and in such case I do give and order the sais one hundred pounds to go and be paid to and divided amongst all such Brothers or Sisters if more than one equally and if but only one Brother or Sister then unto such only Brother or SIster to be paid unto him her or them respectively at his her or their respective age of one and twenty years But in Case my said Grandaughter Mary Baker shall happen to dye before she shall attain her said age and shall have neither Brother or Sister Or in Case such Brother or Sister shall happen to dye before he she or they shll attain his her or their said age Then and in such case I do order the said one hundred pounds to remain unto my said Son Francis Hopkins his Heirs and Assigns and do hereby discharge the said phinfors? from the payment thereof

Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Joseph Hopkins all my household Goods and Furniture which I have at Cholsey farm and I do also forgive him all the Inbruct? due to this heir upon his Bond which he gave me for Eight Hundred pounds whereof he hath paid me four hundred pounds in part

Item I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Martha all and singular my Goods and Furniture of Household now remaining and being in and about my Dwelling house in Housy Law in Cholsey aforesaid

Item all thesum? and residue of my Goods Cattle Chattells Ready money Debts owing and personall Estate wahatsoever not herein before by me given and disposed of (my Debts Legacys and Funerall and Testamentary Expeses being first paid and discharged) I give and bequeath unto my said Son Francis Hopkins whom I do make and ordain full and sole Executor of this my Will and Testament hereby revoking all former Wills by me made either by WOrd or in Writing and declaring this to be my last Will and Testament only and no other In Witnesse whereof I the said Richard Hopkins have to this my last Will and Testament containing two Sheets of Paper to the first Sheet sett my Hand and to the second my Hand and Soul this twenty ninth day of May in the year of our Lord 1749
