The Will of Francis Hopkins
In the name of God Amen I Ffrancis Hopkins of Steventon in the County of Berks Carpenter being in good health of body and of sound mind and memory (praised to God for the same) Do make ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following. And whereas by a certain Surrender made & taken on the date of those presents?, I have surrendered into the hands of the Lords of the said Manor of Steventon according to the customs of the same Manor all that my Messuage or Tenement with the orchard & Close to the same belonging And also four acres of land in the fields of Stenventon aforesaid (viz) In a furlong called Great Midling furlong one acre in the North field abutting upon widefurrow Richard Hopkins North one other acre in Moorditch of arable land in the fields of Steventon aforesaid (viz) in Moorditch furlong one acre in Upper Stowe one acre and in Midle furlong one acre with the appurtanances. And also All those my two half acres of arable land lying in the Southfield of Steventon aforesaid (viz) one half acre in a place called Tatling furlong A piece of Land of Richard Weston on the North Side thereof & the land lots? of Walter Doo & now of Richard Hopkins on the South part, And the other half acre in a certain place called Midle furlong the lands of Richard Hopkins of both sides thereof, with the appurtanances - To the use and behooffs of such person or persons & his or their heirs & assignsm And Subject to such trusts charges provisions Conditions intents & purposes as I the said Ffrancis Hopkins in or by my last Will & Testament in writing attested by three or more credible Witnesses Should direct or appoint. As in and by the said Surrender relation being thereunto had more at large may appear. Now I the said Ffrancis Hopkins by virtue of the powers and authorities to me reserveds in and by the said Surrender, or of any other powers to me belonging do hereby give devise direct and appoint all and Singular the said messuages or Tenement Orchar those and dour acres of land herein first mentioned and the said two low cossons?, with their & every of their appurtances (except the new built bay or space of building Buttery and Staircase lately erected at the east end of the said Messuage) unto my son John Hopkins his heirs and assigns for ever At and under the yearly Quitrant? of two Shillings payable to the Lords of teh fee. And I the said Ffrancis Hopkins by vertue of the powers & authorityes aforesaid, Do hereby give devise direct & appoint All that the said New built Bay or Space of building Buttery and Staircase lately erected at the East end of the said Messuage, And also the said three acres of arable land, And the sd. two half acres of arable land herein last above mentioned, with their & every of their appurtanances, unto my Son Richard Hopkins his heirs and assigns for ever, At & under the yearly Quitrent? of two Shillings, payable to the Lords of the fee. Item I give & bequeath unto my said Son Richard, the bed bedstead curtains vallions and coverings to the same, now being in the chamber in the said New built Bay or Space of building. Item I give to my Daughter Mary Doo the Sum of One Shilling Item all the rest & residue of my goods chattells tools Stock personal Estate and Substance whatsoever (after the payment of my funeral Expenses and all such debts as I shall owe at the time of my decease) I give and bequeath unto my said Sons John Hopkins and Richard Hopkins to be equally divided between them Share and Share alike. And hereby revoking all and every will & wills by me at anyy time or times heretofore made or declared wither by word or writing I do hereby nominate constitute & appoint my said Sons John Hopkins and Richard Hopkins Joint Execs of this my last Will & testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the five and twentieth day of January Anno Dmi One thousand Seven hundred twenty and seven.
