This is the last
Will and Testament of me George
Griffin of Ivinghoe in the County of Buckingham Gentleman I
nominate constitute and appoint my nephew Alexander Griffin son
of my brother William and my nephew William Griffin son of my
brother John and my nephew Thomas Griffin son of my brother
William joint Executors of this my Will and I give to each of my
said Executors the sum of thirty pounds for the trouble they may
have in the execution of the Trusts of my said Will And I direct
that I may be decently interred in the Burial Ground of the
Chapel at New Mill in the Parish of Tring by the side of the
Grave of my former wife or as near thereto as conveniently may
be I give and devise unto my said nephew Thomas Griffin the
son of my brother William all that my Copyhold messuage or
tenement situate and being in Ivinghoe aforesaid with the Garden
Orchard and appurtenances to the same belonging now in my own
occupation And also all those my four Copyhold Cottages or
Tenements and premises with the appurtenances situate at
Ivinghoe aforesaid belonging to the aforesaid messuage and now
in the several occupations of James Treacher Thomas London Ann
Wotton and Elizabeth Griffin widow All which premises I bought
of Ann Horn except a small part of the orchard in my occupation
which I bought of Mr George Meacher To hold to him my said
nephew his heirs and assigns upon condition nevertheless to
permit and suffer my wife Lydia to occupy and enjoy the messuage
wherein I now dwell with the house adjoining it in the
occupation of Elizabeth Griffin widow and the woodhouse yard
garden and appurtenances thereto belonging as now occupied by me
except the orchard and large barn for the term of her natural
life or so long as she shall choose to reside therein or any
part thereof she keeping the same in repair but upon her
quitting the occupation thereof her interest therein shall
cease I give and bequeath to my said wife Lydia the use &
enjoyment of all my household goods ffurniture plate linen china
woollen and household items and goods for the term of her
natural life or so long as she shall continue to reside in the
said messuage and premises at Ivinghoe and after her decease or
upon her quitting the occupation of the said messuage and
premises I give the same to my said nephew Thomas Griffin his
heirs and assigns Also I give and bequeath to my said wife the
legacy or sum of one thousand two hundred pounds to be paid by
my said Executors within six months after my decease but in case
my said wife should die before me then I give and bequeath six
hundred pounds part thereof to her son Thomas Butcher of Tring
in the County of Hertford Grocer and the remaining six hundred
pounds I give and bequeath to her grandchildren Elizabeth
William and Lydia the children of her daughter Elizabeth Hughes
equally to be divided between them share and share alike and if
either of them should die in my lifetime leaving any child or
children then I give and bequeath the respective shares of such
of them as shall so die to their respective children equally
between them And if any of them die in my lifetime leaving no
child or children then I give and bequeath the same to the
survivors or survivor of the said grandchildren I give and
bequeath unto my said Executors the sum of two hundred pounds
upon trust to invest the same at interest in their names either
on Government or real securities in England and to pay and apply
the interest dividends and annual produce thereof unto my niece
Mary Ann the wife of Charles Pain of Chesham in the County of
Buckingham for and during the term of her natural life for her
sole & separate use and benefit and free from the debts or
engagements dominion or control of her husband and the same
shall either be paid into her own hands for which her receipt
shall be a good discharge or be otherwise applied as she from
time to time by writing under her hand shall notwithstanding her
coverture direct But she shall have no power to alienate or
dispose of such interest or annual produce or any part thereof
by anticipation and every such direction so far as the same may
relate to any interest or annual produce not actually accrued
due at the signing thereof shall be absolutely void and from and
after her decease I give & bequeath the said sum of twp hundred
pounds and the Stocks ffunds & securities upon which the same
may be invested unto her daughter for her own absolute use Also
I give and bequeath to the three daughters of my late niece
Sarah the late wife of Ebenezer Daniels of Luton in the County
of Bedford the legacy or sum of ffour hundred pounds equally to
be divided between them share & share alike And if either of
them shall die in my lifetime then I give and bequeath the share
of such of them so dying to the survivors or survivor of them
Also I will and bequeath to the widow of my late brother Henry
the sum of fifty pounds To the wife of my late brother Daniel
the sum of fifty pounds To my sister Elizabeth fifty pounds and
to my servant Sarah Kempster if she shall be living with me at
my decease fifty pounds All which legacies I direct shall be
paid within six months after my decease And all the Rest Residue
and Remainder of my personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever
and of what nature sort or kind soever after payment thereout of
my just debts ffuneral and testamentary expenses I give and
bequeath unto the children of my three brothers John William
and Daniel and the children of my sister Elizabeth equally to be
divided between all such children share and share alike and in
case either of such children shall die in my lifetime leaving
any child or children then I give and bequeath the share of such
child so dying to his or her child or children And my will is
and I direct that my said nephew Thomas Griffin shall pay to the
children of his sister Elizabeth Watson one hundred pounds
equally to be divided between such children and to be paid to
them within six months after my decease Provided always and I
declare that every legacy or share of the said residue
hereinbefore bequeathed to any person who at the time of my
decease shall be under the age of twenty one years shall be a
vested interest in such person being a male on attaining the age
of twenty one years and in a female on attaining that age
marrying which shall first happen and be paid to him or her at
such time or respective times of vesting And if any such person
being a male shall die under the age of twenty one years or
being a female shall die under that age and without having been
married and so often as such event may happen the original share
of every such person so dying and also what may have accrued to
him or her by survivorship shall go and accrue to the surviving
brothers and sisters or brother or sister (if any) of such
person so dying to be equally divided amongst them if more than
one and vest and be payable in like manner as his her or their
original share or shares or as near thereto as may be provided
also and I will that it shall be lawful for my said executors
and the survivor of them and for the executors or administrators
of such survivor from time to time to pay and apply the interest
or annual produce of the expectant portion or portions to which
any such person shall for the time being be presumptively
entitled under this my will for or towards the maintenance or
education of such person until the same portion or portions
shall be payable and to accumulate and improve any surplus of
such interest or annual produce and that all such savings and
accumulations of interest shall be added to and go in all
respects as part of the principal monies producing the same
respectively Provided always and I direct that the Trustees and
Executors of this my Will or either of them shall not be
answerable or accountable for any other monies or effects than
such as shall actually come to their respective hands under this
my Will nor for any Banker broker or other person entrusted with
the receipt or possession of any monies or effects in the course
of executing this my Will or the Trusts thereof nor for the
defect or insufficiency of any security or fund upon which any
monies shall be put or invested nor for any other loss
misfortune or damage which may happen to my Estate or to their
Trusts or ffunds or any part thereof unless the same shall
happen or be occasioned by or through his or their respective
wilful default And that one of my Trustees and Executors shall
not be answerable or accountable for the other of them but each
of them with or for his own acts defaults or receipts only their
joining in receipts for the sake of conformity notwithstanding
And I do likewise declare my will to be that it shall be lawful
for my said Trustees and Executors or either of them or their or
either of their executors or administrators to deduct retain
allow and discharge in the first place by or out of the monies
which shall come to their respective hands under or by virtue of
this my Will all costs charges damages and expenses which they
or either of them shall or may sustain expend or be put to in or
about the execution of this my Will or in any wise relating
thereto And hereby revoking all former Wills by me made I do
publish and declare this to be my last In witness whereof I
have to each of these four sheets of paper set my hand and to
the last of them affixed my seal this twenty second day of
September one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven

Calverley Curteis Doctor of Laws & Surrogate by the Oaths of
William Griffin and Thomas Griffin the nephews two of the
executors to whom admon was granted having been first sworn duly
to administer. Power reserved of making the like grant to
Alexander Griffin the nephew also the other executor when he
