The Will of William Gould
In the Name of God Amen I William Gould
superannuated Gunner from His Majestys Ship the San Joseph at this time
by the will of God Prisoner of War to the Enemies of my Country in the
hospital (at the Isle of ffrance being sound in mind although weak &
reduced in body) do declare this to be my last will and Testament & do
hereby revoke and cancel all & every other Testamentary Deed relating to
the disposal of my Property after death which I may at any time
hereafter have proceeded from me I give & bequeath to my dear sons
William Gould my older boy & Charles Jones Gould my younger boy now or
late both of them in the Naval Service of his Britannic Majesty All the
property of every kind species or description whether in Land houses
money Goods & Cloaths etc of which I may die possessed or to which I may
be intitled at the time of my decease to be divided between them in
equal portions of this property I desire to specify particularly about
two years wages or pension as Gunner of His Majestys Ship San Joseph
aforesaid my wages for the Hound of London Merchants Snow. of which Mr
Chas London was Master & in which….I had the misfortune to be captured
in March 1809 and lastly all my Cloaths or other Personal Property which
may be about my person at the time of my decease I beseech my late
Commander aforesaid Mr Charles London to take on himself the disposal of
such property of mine as may be found at the dole of ffrance to dispose
of it to the best advantage in order that my two sons aforesaid may
receive the greatest possible benefit from it but should it have pleased
Almighty God to have taken from this world either one of my two sons
aforesaid in such case I bequeath all my Property not only as is above
described but also all other to which I may be intitled at the time of
my death to the survivor of my two Children but in case it should have
pleased Almighty God to have taken to himself my two sons aforesaid then
I give and bequeath all my Property not only as is above described but
also all other Property I may die possessed of or be intitled to unto
the Chest at Chatham for the relief of wounded Seamen in order to give
good utility to the execution of this my last Will and Testament by
giving references to the two boys above named it may be necessary to
state that William Gould was in July 1808 on board his Majestys ship
Dryad & that at the same period Charles Jones Gould was on board his
Majestys ship San Joseph lastly I appoint Mr Charles London late Master
of the Snow Hound aforesaid Exor of this my Will and Testament & I do
hereby given him full power and authority to obtain procure & recover
for the use of my two sons aforesaid or the survivor of them in the
Event of one being dead or in the event of both being dead for the use
of the Chest of Chatham aforesaid all & any such sum or sums which now
are or may at the time of my decease be due to me but in case Charles
London aforesaid should decline this unprofitable executorship I give &
grant to both my Sons or the survivor of them the same powers of
executorship as delegated to Mr London by the last paragraph in the will
or both being dead I appoint the Trustees of the Chest at Chatham Exors
of this my will in behalf of the charitable trusts entrusted to them In
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this twenty fourth
day of December in the Year of our blesses Saviour 1809
