The four and Twentieth day of Aprill in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand six hundred ffifty and five I John Goaty of Hartfield in the County of Sussex Yeoman being sick and diseased in body but of sound good and perfect remembrance Thanks bee to Almighty God doe make ordaine and constitute this to bee my last will and Testament in manner and forme following that is to say ffirst I commend my soule into the hands of Almighty god in the ? of his only sonne Jesus Christ my only saviour and redeemer And my body to bee decently buried within the churchyard of the parish church of Hartfield aforesaid

Item I give unto the poore of the parish of Hartfield aforesayd ten shillings to be distributed amongst them at the discretion of my executor hereafter nominated and appointed within one month after my decease

Item I give unto Elizabeth my welbeloved wife the bed whereon we usually lye togeather with the Stoddle? boulsterd pillowes curtaines one paire of sheetes and all therunto belonginge And also all her weaving apparell and clothes whatsoever

Item I give and bequeath all and singular my Store? ? plate moveable bondes bills one ? and household stuffe whatsoever unto William Goaty my eldest sonne provided ass? and uppon this cond? That the sayd William Goaty do and shall well and truely pay or raise to be payd All at such times and in such manner and forme as is hereafter nominated ? and declared That is to say the summe of one hundred pounds of good and lawful monie of England unto Easter Goaty my daughter to be payd unto her within one yeare after my decease And also the summe of Twenty pounds unto Stephen Jones my grandchild when e shall accomplish his full age of one and twenty yeares togeather also with twenty shillings by the yeare to be payd yearly unto Richard Jones my son-in-law onto the guardian of my sayd grandchild towards the maintaynance and bringing of him up untill he shall attain to his sayd age of one and twenty yeares ? And also forty shillings by the yeare unto the aforesayd Elizabeth my wife during the terme of her naturall life to be payd her quarterly And also twenty shillings to my sonne John Goaty payable within one month after my decease

Item I constitute ordaine and make my sayd sonne William Goaty sole executor of this my last will and Testament but if my sayd sonne happen to depart this life without issue of his body lawfully begotten Then I give and bequeath all and singular my stoire room Chattel monies plate moveables goods bonds bills ? and household stuffe aforesayd unto my youngest sonne John Goaty aforesayd provided and uppon this condition that hee the sayd John Goaty doe and shall well and truely pay or cause to be payd All and singular my legacies and severall summe and ? of aforesayd in manner and forme as aforesayd and as my sayd sonne William if in case hee had lived should and ought to have done I ? alsoe with ffifty pounds of good and lawfull monie of England unto my grandchilde Stephen Jones aforesayd to be likewise payd him when he shall attain unto his full age of one and twenty yeares aforesayd over and above and besides the legacie of Twenty pounds aforesayd

Item if my sayd sonne William happen to dye as aforesayd then I doe constitute ordain and make my sayd sonne John Goaty sole executor of this my last will and Testament Witness my hand and seale unto every sheete hereof John Goaty his mark sealed and signed in the presence of Alexander Eliott his mark Mary Matase? her marke John Chivrock?
