The Will of John Gilbert
In the Name of God
Amen I John Gilbert of the Parish of St Mary
Overy Bankside Southwark being in health of
body and of a sound Mind Memory and
Understanding Praised be the ffather son and
God the holy Spirit for the same do make
publish and declare this to be my last Will
and Testament in manner following that is
when I die to be interred in the vault of
Rotherhithe Church as near as Possible to my
dear Wife Ann Maria Gilbert and Lett to Mr
Preston my undertaker bury me let me have a
plain decent ffuneral I give leave and
bequeath to my Son William Gilbert the Sum
of Two Hundred Pounds which he has in Trade
for his own use I give leave and bequeath to
my daughter Elizabeth Gilbert the Sum of Two
Hundred Pounds which my Son William Gilbert
holds of my Property in his hands I give
leave and bequeath to my Grand daughter
Elizabeth Allom the Sum of Two Hundred
Pounds which my Son Benjamin Gilbert now
holds in his hands of my property I give
leave and bequeath to my Son Benjamin
Gilbert the Sum of Two Hundred Pounds which
is in the ffunds of ffour per cents to be at
his disposal and for his own use I likewise
leave and bequeath to my Son Benjamin
Gilbert the Interest of Eight hundred pounds
in the ffour per Cents for his life and I
likewise leave to my Son Benjamin Gilbert
All my ffurniture of every description Books
Drawers and Book Cases I likewise leave and
bequeath to my Son Benjamin P Gilbert all my
Wearing Apparel of every description and
likewise my Uncle Humble’s Mourning Ring and
in case my son Benjamin Gilbert dies without
Children I likewise leave to my daughter
Sarah Gilbert for her life the interest in
the ffour Pr Cents which is eight hundred
pounds of Twenty Pounds Pr Year I say Twenty
Pounds Interest of my eight hundred pounds
in the ffunds of ffour per cents that is in
case they have no Children But in case they
have Children the eight hundred pounds
Principal and Interest to go to their
Children But in case they have no Children
the Interest and Principal to go to my Grand
daughter Elizabeth Allom at the death of
Uncle and Aunt Gilbert I likewise leave and
bequeath to my Grand daughter the remaining
Interest at the death of her Uncle Twelve
Pounds per Year Interest of my Stock in the
ffunds of ffour per cents I likewise make
choice of Mr Preston my undertaker as my
Executor I leave and bequeath to my friend
Mr Preston my Executor ffive Guineas for his
trouble out of my Estate I desire my friend
Mr Preston to collect my Book Debts in if
any should be owing me and likewise dispose
of my Stock of Linen drapery and hosiery to
the best advantage and divide the Property
between my two Brothers that is my two Sons
if any should be in hand after my debts and
ffuneral Expences are settled and if my
Grand daughter Elizabeth Allom don’t chuse
to accept her Grandmother’s Turnip Watch as
she was pleased to call it let her make it a
Present to her Aunt Gilbert but her
Grandmother bequeathed it to her at her
death and if you my Children or any of my
Christian ffriends should wish any Minister
to make any Improvement on the death of a
poor Sinner chuse Mr Townsend if agreeable
to you I leave the Minister one Guinea Hat
Band and Gloves Lett the subject on which I
would wish him to Preach from be Thanks be
to God who giveth us the Victory through our
Lord Jesus Christ I think it is in the first
book of Corinthians Chapter the 15th Verse
the 57th this I declare to be my last Will
and Testament this 20th day of July 1809
