The Will of Cecelia Fiennes

 

It being appointed for all men once to die and the time uncertain, I Cecelia Fiennes of the parish of Chipping Barnet in the county of Hertford being in soundness of mind and understanding and perfect health praised be my good God, but advanced in yeares and increasing infirmities of body and sudden seizures doe make this my last will and testament in manner following - First I recommend my soul into the hands of my Almighty Creator that gave it me ...... I committ my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executrix hereafter named without ostenation only put into a leaden coffin and interred in my father’s sepulchre in the church at Newtontony in the county of Wiltshire the place of my nativity and only an addition on the marble monument for my father to be inserted my age and time of death and I forbid all escutcheons or bearers only an acchievement on the door for a month then send down to hang up in the church of Newtontony... after my funeral expences I charge my whole estate Real and Personal with £40 left me as executrix to Mrs Frances Salsberry as her by me proved which is by me that it should be placed in some common fund that the yearly profits should purchase bread for to be distributed to the prisoners at Ludgate and White Chappel which I have done ever since not being able to find some public fund that would be troubled with such a little sum ....

Also I having promised Mrs Corilia Withall when she was married to add to then my gift at my death £50 more to her .

Also William Nutcher that was my servant 15 year I had promised him £20 after 10 years service which at his 15 year promised him £30 more doe here confirm my gift of £50. I give unto my other servants 40s a piece. I appoint 20s a year for 10 years to the private church at Barnet and as I had given them a table cloth and pewter plate for the communion I also give £5 to the Poor of Newtontony the place of my Nativity in Wiltshire.

I also give £5 to the poor of Hackney at the discretion of Mr John Barker, minister of the private church.

As to jewels and plate I give to my executrix except what hereafter shall be limited either in this my will or writing under my hand or seal ....

And as to my neice Reade having given her at her marriage my dressing plate and a buckle of 10 large diamonds she being dead I give what was designed for her to her daughter Mrs Mary Reade my silver warming pan and as I had given her my diamond ring with the crown I now give her my Lord say and Seales picture set in gold and the two pictures set in square ebony frames of my grandmother and grandfather Say and Seale and my Japan cabinet and Neice King a picture Cecilia Snell having given her at her marriage a diamond necklace of 48 large diamonds I now give her a picture of my grandfather Whithed [Whitehead] set in gold I give my Nephew William Snell junior my repeating clock for his closet to remind him time passes I give to Mrs Cecilia Snel junior my silver sup and cover with the Coronet and my ring sett with diamonds and Rubie to be worn by her not altered I give to Mrs Mary Snel colets of diamonds and my diamond tags To my neice Jane King besides the large pearl necklace I gave her at her marriage and stich pillows and quilt I give her my father’s picture set in gold in miniature I give to Mrs Mary King besides the ring of Emeralds and hair I give my diamond buckle to my neice Watson having given her at her marriage a large silver salver and a pearl necklace of three rows she now being dead I add to her eldest daughter Mrs Mary Watson my gold watch. I give to M Mrs Corilia Watson my diamond earings to be worn by her for my sake. I give her also my silver tea kettle I give to Mrs Sarah Morse wife to my Doctor Justinian Morse my seatee of Irish Stich and my single large silver plaite in gratitude to their great care. I give my own servant that attends me at my death all my clothes only what shall except under my handwriting. I give her 6 gilt tea spoons . To my own maid is any such maid has lived 2 years also let it be divided with the cook maid. I give Mrs Mary Wilkinson my mourning ring of sister Harrison. I give Mrs Boaker my mourning ring of my neice Reads and the square locket with NFF and she is to give it her daughter Frances I give my silver canister and silver nutmeg box to Mrs Mary Egot Mrs Morse neice I also give £5 to Mrs Ann Hancock and my Japan tea chest. I give my case of knife fork and spoon and gold thimble to Mrs Eliza Counval ? and my two books of Dr Baits of the attributes of God and man’s uprightness I give to Mrs Philipps sister to my nephew King my book Archbishops in a red leather with gold. I give Mrs Hanna Devise my mourning ring of old Mrs Reads and my book of Mrs Rows I give Mrs Eleanor Catline my mourning ring of my little neice Jane King and my book ?ines on the sacrament I give to Mrs Speed my book of Bishop Wilkinson on prayer.

I give Mrs Withall the mourning ring of Mrs Midlewhaite and that of Mrs Robert my mourning rings of my nephew Harrison I give to Mrs Eliza Orford . I constitute my neice Jane King wife fo Matthias King my whole and sole executrix... etc 6 November 1738

 

Codicil - My misfortune of losing my dear neice King dying before me oblige me to constitute anoher to execute this my will ... appoint Matthias King Esq husband of the deceased 15 Oct 1739.

 

And as my nieces are all amply provided for especially my Neice Read and my neice King therefore shall order all my real and personal estate not limited by this to be all sold, all my furniture and goods (except plate and jewells and books and family pictures which I give to my neice Mary King ) all else to be sold and my marsh land and money in bond or cash... to be paid into the fund for Country Ministers at the discretion of Mr John Barker and Mr Hunt the pastors of the church at Hackney.... 30 July 1740

 

Having reserved in my will ..... I insert here as a direction to my executrix.... I desire Mrs Eliza Bayly wife of Captain Bayly my irish Stich Cushon 8 in number she having two window seat, I gave her of the same and my locket of my neice Kings hair ring and a little locket the christal a little Crakt. I appoynt so many mourning ring to those names on the margen no more

Names in the margin are - Rings to all my nieces and nephews in number 10. To Mr Barker & Mr Hunt and to Dr Wright of Hackney and Mr Morss,. Mr Rawlin, Mr Fisher, Mr Catline, Mr Withall, Mrs Philips, Mrs Bayly, my own maid, 10 more, My Cozen Trtoman, My Cozen Knight 2 more.

I forbid bearers escutcheons and should be glad if Captain Bayly, Mr Withall and Mr Catline might goe with my remains and see it reposed as I have desired [details for her burial and what to do with the bones of her mother and sister ] ....

My sabel muff and tippet I always designed for my Lady Smith now if her daughters Mrs Ann and Mrs Jane will accept them let it and all the fur in the box to make it up be sent them. My 2 gilt tea spoons and 2 silver spoons with CF and my Blake Silk Mantua and Coat to my own maide and all my cloths but what I shall limit hereafter as my green damaske and all pieces of the same my unwatterd Tabby mourning for my neice King these I give to Mrs Withall my old servant and one suite of Linning under and upper one paire of my winter sheet one Damask Table cloth. I give Mrs Wilkinson my blew and gold atlas and let Rachel Cook chuse which of the wraught gowns she likes best my scarlet to Mrs Anne Hancock my velvet to Mrs Mary Eget. Mrs Morrse neice my cook maid one ordinary night gown and some of my ordinary linning. Let my washer woman have my cotton night gown one paire of my ordinary couch sheets and ordinary apron. My silver coffee pot I give to Mrs Philipps my nephew Kings sister and desire she may assist Mrs Withall and my maide in parting my cloth and selling my goods.

All the goods in the house in mine Copper Grate Stove all but the two locks in the kitchen and one Garret The goods at Barnet Mr Morsse possibly will by Bed and Beding Curtain Chairs and Ebony Couch.

I give my Tortishell Cabinet I give my Niece Mary King and my bookcase and my books but what have anybodys Name on the frontispiece. my easy chair English stitch and the covers for two Square Stools the frame the same colours to Neice Read. I give my other easy chair on wheels and the 2 other square stools that have hook and staples to hang on to the chair as a couch to my neice Mary King All my plate not limited as given Let but the Castors be sold being old the produce of all which the sale of my marsh lands and any money on any funds or money in cash after funeral expences which is to be as privett as can be a hearse and one coach and to go out early in the morning and soe the backside of the town to the Western roade all down without ostentation and my debt paid servants wages what remains to be paid into the fund for country Ministers of the descenting denomination

16th April 1741 Appeared personally Jane Wincott and Alice Wincott both spinsters of the parish of St John, Hackney.... who made oaths that they knew well Cecilia Fiennes late of the parish of Chipping Barnet but in the parish of St John Hackney, deceased.... and were well acquainted with her manner and character of handwriting... and do depose that the said CF did write and subscribe the Codicils etc....

 

16th April 1741 personally appeared Matthias King Esq of the parish of St Johns Hackney, sole executor etc......
