The Will of John Edwards

 

I John Edwards of Stratford in the County of Essex Gentleman do make this my last Will and testament in manner following (that is to say) I give and bequeath unto Jane Watson Matthews Spinster the daughter of my late Wife and now living with me as my Housekeeper an Annuity of Sixty Pounds of lawful money of Great Britain for and during the term of her natural life to and for her own Sole and Separate use and benefit and not to be Subject or liable to the debts Controul or Engagement of any Husband with whom she may intermarry in any manner howsoever and her receipt alone whether she shall be married or Sole to be a Sufficient discharge for the same And in order to give a fund for the Payment of the said Annuity my Will is and I do direct that my trustees and Executors hereinafter mentioned do and shall sell out a sufficient part of the Long Annuities now standing in my name and therewith or with the Produce of any other part of my Estate and Effects that may be convenient for that purpose purchase in their own names so much Stock either in the three Pounds Per Cent Bank Annuities the three & a half Per Cent Bank Annuities or the Four Pounds Per Cent Bank Annuities as from the dividends or Interest thereof will produce the said Annual Sum of Sixty Pounds and do and shall from time to time pay and apply such dividends as the same shall become due and Payable in and for the Payment of the said Annuity Also I give and bequeath unto the said Jane Watson Matthews the Sum of thirty pounds in Cash to be paid to her within one Calendar month next after my decease And Subject to the raising and Payment of the said Annuity and Legacy I give and bequeath all the said residue and remainder of my Estate and Effects which I shall die possessed of interested in or entitled unto my dear brother Thomas Mostyn Edwards his heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns to and for his and their own absolute use and benefit And lastly I hereby nominate and appoint my said dear brother and Joseph Robinson the Younger of Seething Lane London Lighterman Executors and trustees of this my Will hereby revoking all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Sixth day of June in the Year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and twenty Six   J.
