In the name of God amen,
this 2nd day
of June 1723, I, Timothy
Dewell of Lidyard
Tregoze in the county of
Wilts, Gent, being of
perfect mind and memory
(praised be God for it),
calling to mind the
mortality of my body and
knowing that it is
appointed for all men
once to die, do make and
ordain this my last will
and testament in writing
in manner and form
following:
First, I commend my soul
into the hands of
Almighty God my maker,
trusting through the
merits of Jesus Christ
my only saviour and
redeemer to be made
partaker of everlasting
life and of a joyful
resurrection, and
resigning my body to the
earth whereof it was
made to be buried in
Christian and decent
manner with a tomb of
stone upon my grave;
And as touching such
worldly estate and goods
wherewith it hath
pleased God to bless me
in this life, I give and
bequeath the same in
manner and form
following:
Imprimis, I give and
bequeath unto my brother
Charles Dewell all my
lands and tenements
lying in the tythings of
Eastcutt and Westcott
within the parish of
Swindon in the county of
Wilts which my father
gave me and was my
mother’s jointure and is
now in the tenure and
occupation of Ralph
Thorn; I do give my said
brother Charles Dewell
during his natural life,
provided always and on
condition that he pay
yearly unto my brother
Henry Dewell during his
natural life the yearly
sum of twenty pounds per
annum to be paid him
half yearly and free
from all taxes, and
after the decease of my
said brother Charles
Dewell I do give and
bequeath all those lands
and tenements to my
nephew Charles Dewell,
son of my said brother
Charles Dewell, to him
and his heirs for ever,
provided always and upon
the same condition that
he and his heirs pay
yearly the aforesaid
annuity of twenty pounds
per annum to my said
brother Henry Dewell
during his natural life;
and furthermore my will
is that if my said
nephew Charles Dewell
happen to die before his
father, then I do give
and bequeath all those
lands and tenements to
my nephew Timothy
Dewell, son of my said
brother Charles Dewell,
to him and his heirs
forever after the
decease of his father,
he and his heirs paying
the aforesaid annuity of
twenty pounds per annum
to my brother Henry
Dewell during his
natural life;
Item, all the rest of my
lands and tenements in
the tything of Eastcott
in the parish of Swindon
aforesaid, which I
bought of John Wilde and
is now in the tenure and
occupation of Thomas
Iles and Francis Hore I
do give and bequeath to
my brother Charles
Dewell until his son, my
nephew, Charles Dewell
arrives and comes to the
age of four and twenty
years, and then I give
and bequeath all those
last mentioned lands and
tenements to my said
nephew Charles Dewell to
him and his heirs
forever; and furthermore
my will is that if my
said nephew Charles
Dewell shall happen to
die before he comes to
the age of four and
twenty years, then I do
give and bequeath all
those last mentioned
lands and tenements to
my nephew Timothy Dewell
to him and his heirs
forever when he comes to
the age of four and
twenty years;
Item, I give to my
brother Henry ten pounds
of good and lawful money
of Great Britain to be
paid him within twelve
months after my decease,
and two silver salt
cellars called plate
salts and a gold ring;
Item, I give to my niece
Elizabeth Dewell,
daughter of my brother
Henry Dewell one hundred
pounds of lawful money
of Great Britain to be
paid her when she comes
to the age of thirty
years or within twelve
months after her
marriage, which shall
first happen, and I
likewise give her my
silver cup marked
E.S/T.D and a gold ring;
Item, I give to my niece
Ann Dewell, daughter of
my brother Henry Dewell,
fifty pounds of like
lawful money to be paid
her when she comes to
the age of thirty years
or within twelve months
after her marriage,
which shall first
happen, and I likewise
give her my silver cup
marked D/R.A and a gold
ring;
Item, I give my nephew
Charles Dewell, son of

paid him when he comes
to the age of four and

five guinea piece of

candlesticks and
snuffers, and my set of

my nephew Charles Dewell
when he comes to the age
of four and twenty years
and my gold stone ring;

nephew Timothy Dewell,

of one thousand pounds
of good and lawful money
of great Britain to be
paid him when he comes
to the age of four and
twenty years, and I
likewise give him my

ring for her care she
took of me in my
illness;

brother Thomas Dewell’s
seven youngest daughters
each five pounds and to
my niece Elizabeth
Dewell, eldest daughter
of my said brother
Thomas Dewell, I give
her twenty pounds, to be
paid her and her sisters
within twelve months
after my decease and out
of the money they owe
me; and I further give
my said niece, Elizabeth
Dewell, the eldest
daughter of my brother

silver sugar box and a

And I give my friend Mr.
Jonathan Rogers and his
wife each a gold ring;

as they come to the age
of one and twenty years;

Hunt of Reading and her
two granddaughters my
cousin Holsted’s each
three pounds to be paid
to each of them within
twelve months after my
decease;

Bridget Ives of the
parish of Acton in the
county of Middlesex, who
formerly lived with my
uncle Dr Saunders and my
brother Richard Dewell,
I give her forty
shillings a year during
her natural life;
Item, I give to the poor
of the parish of Lidyard
Tregoze in the county of
Wilts the sum of twenty
pounds to be put out to
use and the interest
thereof yearly be given
to the poor of the said
parish against every
Christmas day forever;
