The Will of Robert Cockeram
|
In the name of God Amen I Robert
Cockeram late of Eglesston within
the Isle of Purbeck and County of
Dorset gent being in good health and
of perfect memory prayse be given
unto Almighty God do make and ordain
this my last will and testament in
manner and form following vide first
and principally I give and commend
my Soul unto the hand of Almighty
God my maker and Redeemer and my
body I commit to the earth to be
buried where it shall seem fit to my
executrix whom I shall hereafter in
this my last will and nominate and
appoint Now as touching the
disposing of my land goods and
chattels my will is as followeth
(that is to say first I give and
bequeath unto the parish Church of
Tyneham within the Isle and County
aforesaid the sum of ten shillings
and to the poor people of the said
place I give the sum of ten
shillings to be distributed amongst
them by the discretion of my said
executrix within short time after my
burial Item I give and bequeath unto
my son Dennys Cockeram and his heirs
all my land tente and hereditaments
whatsoever with their appurtenances
in Sherborne Newlands Oborne and
Castle town within the said County
of Dorset Item I give and bequeath
unto my daughter Elizabeth all my
meadow land tente and hereditaments
in Eastholme in the said County of
Dorset with their appurtenances
whatsoever to have and to hold unto
her and her heirs forever Item I
give and bequeath unto my said
daughter Elizabeth the sum of two
hundred pounds provided always that
if it shall happen my said daughter
Elizabeth to dye before she shall
come to the full age of sixteen
years then my will is and I give and
bequeath one hundred marked parsell
of the same legacie of two hundred
pounds unto Katherine Cockeram my
granddaughter one of the daughters
of my son William Cockeram And my
will is also that ….the residue of
the said legacie of two hundred
pounds shall be equally divided to
and amongst the residue of the
children of my son William and of my
said son Dennys Cockeram which shall
be living at the time of the death
of my said daughter Elizabeth Item I
give and bequeath unto Avice Talbott
my grandchild being the daughter of
my son in law William Talbott the
sum of one hundred pounds which
legacie I will and do appoint shall
be payd by my said executrix unto
Richard Byles of Child Ocford in the
said County of Dorset Gent and
Bruine Cockeram clerk my nephew
within one year next after my
decease And I do desire my good
friends Richard Byles and Bruine
Cockeram to lett out the same
carefully for the best profit they
must lawfully make of same
until the said Avice shall
accomplish her age of sixteen years
And at her age of sixteen years to
pay unto her the said sum of one
hundred pounds together with such
profit as they have thereof made or
to deliver unto her such assurance
as they have taken for the same and
provided always that if it shall
happen the said Avice Talbot do dye
before she shall come to the age of
sixteen years then my will is and I
give and bequeath the said sum of
one hundred pounds together with
such profit and have been thereof
made by the said Richard Byles and
Bruine Cockeram to and amongst the
children of my said sons William and
of the children of my said son
Dennys Cockeram which shall be
living at the time of the death of
the said Avice Talbott so dyeing
before her age of sixteen years by
even and equal parts to be divided
among them Item I give unto Bruine
Cockeram clerk parson
of Sandwich the sum of five
pounds Item I give unto Bartholomew
Cockeram the son of my brother John
Cockeram the sum of five pounds Item
I give unto Rachel Spencer my
servant ten pounds Item I give unto
Richard
Forssey my servant forty
shillings Item I give unto every of
my godchildren six
shillings a piece which said
legacies I will to be payed within
one whole year next after my decease
And whereas my son William Cockeram
together with other sureties stand
bound unto me and unto my brother in
law Richard Srovill and unto
Benjamin Byles my brother in law in
the sum of eight hundred pounds for
the sume
payment of four hundred
pounds lawfull money of England unto
such …..
and persons as I shall by my last
will and testament
limit
or appoint the said sum of four
hundred pounds being payable by the
same bond within one year next after
my death now I do limit and appoint
the said sum of four hundred pounds
to be paid unto my said executrix
for the better enabling them to pay
all the legacies herein by me
described and bequeathed and for the
better performance of this my last
will and Testament And I do hereby
further give devise and bequeath
unto my said executrix the said sum
of four hundred pounds and the full
and whole benefit of the same bond
Item I give devise and bequeath unto
Anne my beloved wife for the term of
her life all that my toft of land or
tenement and garden containing by
estimation half h. yard of ground
(be it more or less) together with
the houses at the east and west ends
thereof lately erected and built by
John Harding and by me of him
purchased together with all other my
lands tentes and hereditaments
situate and being within the parish
of the Holy Trinity in Wareham in
the said County of Dorset and which
I lately purchased and bought of the
said John Harding unto to me and my
heirs and after the decease of the
said Anne my wife I will that the
said toft of lands tentes garden and
all other the said premises.in
Wareham aforesaid shall go and
remain unto my said daughter
Elizabeth and the heirs of her body
lawfully to be begotten And for
default of such issue then I will
that my toft of land tentes garden
and other the said premises in the
parish of the Holy Trinity in
Wareham aforesaid shall go and
remain to the said Avice Talbott and
to the heirs of her body lawfully to
be begotten and for default of such
issue then I will that the said toft
of land tentes and garden and other
the premises in Wareham aforesaid
shall go and remain unto my right
heirs forever and whereas there is a
defective title
lately found out of the said
toft tentes and garden and other the
premises in Wareham aforesaid which
is not as yet conveyed unto me and
my heirs as is intended and promised
Now my meaning is and I do hereby
direct that the same shall be
conveyed unto my said wife daughter
and grandchild in such manner as is
before limited for the better
strengthening of their estate and
for the better performance of my
intent and meaning herein before
expressed And whereas I have a lease
for divers years yet to come.by
time of

do give and bequeath all my said …

intent

and seal the eleventh day of July in
the fifth year of the reign of our
Sovereign Lord Charles by the grace
of God of England Scotland France
and Ireland King Defender of the
faith Anno dom One thousand six

read unto the above named Robert
Cockeram who did allow thereof and
publish and declared the same to be
his last will and testament and in
token thereof did sign the same with
his own hand and set his seal
