In the Name of God Amen I JOSEPH COATES of
Richmond in the County of York gentleman do declare this to be my
Last Will and Testament. First I commend my soul into the hands of
Almighty God and my Body I desire may be decently buried at the
discretion of my executors hereinafter mentioned and as to all my
real and personal Estate and Effects good and chattels I give and
dispose of them in manner following that is to say I give and devise
and bequeath to ELIZABETH COATES my dear loving wife ROBERT ATHORPE
of Richmond Esquire LEONARD HARTLEY of Middleton Tyas Esquire all
and singular my Freehold and Copyhold lands tenements and
hereditaments situate and being at Richmond, Northallerton and
Borrowby in the County of York excepting that my Capital messuage
called Borrowby House with the land hereditaments and premises there
unto belonging and presmises belonging the said Copyhold above
devised having been already surrendered to the use of my last will
together with all my Personal Estate .... that they may after my
decease sell ... any of my Real and Personal Estate, not above
declared to be excepted for the most money ... to pay all my just
debts funeral expences and such legacies as I by my last will shall
give and bequeath or as were given and bequeathed by the Last Will
of my late Uncles JOSEPH SNOWDEN and METHUSALEM SNOWDEN which are
not yet become due ....
Item I give and bequeath to my daughters
ELIZABETH and ANN £10 each over and above their respective shares of
£500 given them by the last will of my late Uncle METHUSALEM SNOWDEN
.... at age of 21 years or the time of marriage which shall come
first ...
Item I give devise and bequeath to my younger
daughters ROSAMUND and MARY £100 each to be paid at the respective
times and under the like proviso ... and whereas my Uncle METHUSALEM
by his Last Will and Testament devised that such small legacies as
he should order ... might be paid ... he directed 20 shillings a
year might be for ever distributed to the Poor of the Corporation of
Richmond the week before Christmas ... therefore I order and direct
the yearly payment of 20 shillings be particularly charged upon and
paid out of my close or parcel of ground ... in the township of
Richmond called Poultris Croft for the charitable purpose above
mentioned ....
Whereas I have in this my will above excepted
against the sale of my Capital Messuage Borrowby House with lands
and premises ... I hereby devise the same to the use of my dear wife
for the term of her natural life to whom I also give and devise all
the residue and remainder of my real and personal estate .... I
likewise nominate and appoint my wife executrix together with ROBERT
ATHORPE and LEONARD HARTLEY ... hereby revoking all former and other
wills ...

spinster; Jonathan Baynes of Richmond but now of London gent ; John
Thompson of Richmond.

COATS executrix and devisee in Trust on 2 January 1748 (1749 by
modern calendar)
