In the Name of God Amen I JOHN COATE the elder
of Helme in the parish of Aisgarth and County of York yeoman being
weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory do make and
publish this my Last Will and testament in manner and form
following. First I give to my son CHRISTOPHER COATE of Askrigg
Innkeeper the sum of £25. Also to my son JOHN COATE of Helme the sum
of 5 shillings. Also I give to my daughter SARAH the wife of GEORGE
SCARR of Helme £10. Also I give to my daughter JANE the wife of
JAMES JOHNSON of Skelgill £4. Also I give to JOHN SCARR the son of
GEORGE SCARR £1 but not to be paid to him till he attain 21 years.
Item I will that all the legacys above
mentioned be paid by my executors but not until 2 years next after
my decease.
Item I give and devise unto my son in law
ARTHUR KETTLEWELL of Broadale House near Shaw Coate in the County of
York who lateley married my daughter MARGARET all that my messuage
or dwelling house wherein I now live scituate and being at Helme
together with two stables and 1 garth called Low Calf Garth and all
the household goods and furniture which shall be in the said
dwelling house at the time of my decease as also all my horses cows
and quick goods whatsoever which I shall dye possessed of.
Item I give and devise to my son in law ARTHUR
KETTLEWELL all that close called Banks 2 1/2 acres and half of a
summer pasture called The Faw, one other close called Haggs 2 acres
, close called Braken Spot 2 acres, close called Butts 1 acre, close
called the Foss Ing 6 1/2 acres and 3 cattlegates in Helme Pasture
and also 1shilling yearly rent payable by Thomas Whorton of Grainge
to me out of a parcel of land lying in Skelgill within the
territories of Helme and are part or reputed part of the Manor of
Dale Grange. To Have and To Hold ... subject to the payments of the
several and respective legacys ...
Item it is my will that my dearly beloved wife
MARGARET COATE do as soon as conveniently may be after my decease go
to live with my said son in law ARTHUR KETTLEWELL and also that he
.. ARTHUR KETTLEWELL .. shall and will find and also provide for her
my dear wife MARGARET COATE sufficient meat drink wshing lodgeing
and apparel for and during the term of her natural life.
Lastly I do hereby make and ordain him my said
son in law ARTHUR KETTLEWELL sole executor of this my Last Will and
Testament desiring him to pay all my just debts and Funeral
exepences hereby revoking all other wills by me made in witnesses
whereof I the said JOHN COATE the elder have hereby set my hand and
seal 4 May 1749
