In the Name of God Amen I CHRISTOPHER CLARKSON
of Richmond butcher in the County of Yorkshire being of sound mind
and knowledge do make this my last will and testament as follows. I
resign myself to my Creator in all humble hope of being happy with
him in futurity as in the disposal of an all infinitely merciful and
wise being . As to my remains my will is that if I die at Richmond
it be interred in Richmond burying ground in a decent humble manner
being carried by Butchers my fellow labourers in trade to each of
whom I order a pair of black gloves and a glass of wine : If I
happen to die at any inconvenient or distant place my will is that
my remains be interred in the nearest burying ground adjacent
decently and humbly.
Item I hereby declare and appoint JOHN
CLARKSON butcher my fifth son my sole executor if my survivor of
this my last will and testament authorizing him hereby to possess
and enjoy my money in Trade only (and no moneys which I have out
upon interest estate cattle utensils whatsoever and wearing apparel
after my death : Videlicet my house standing at the Bottom of
Frenchgate and my Field adjoining the road leading to the Clink Pool
both free from any incumbrances) To hold the said premises unto and
to the use of my son JOHN CLARKSON his heirs and assigns upon terms
and condistions as follows.
Item I give and devise to my dear loving wife
MARY CLARKSON for her natural life (and widowhood and no longer) my
house standing at the bottom of Frenchgate with the Furniture in the
said house and £20 a year to commence payment at my death and to be
paid every half year to herself. Likewise my fifth son JOHN CLARKSON
my executor to pay to my said wife MARY CLARKSON at my death £10 to
buy Mourning.
Item I now consequently proceed to declare
what my last will and testament is further .... my fifth son JOHN
CLARKSON butcher to pay my said dear and loveing wife MARY CLARKSON
£6 annually and half yearly for her natural life chargeable from the
close leading down to the Clink Pool and likewise £4 annually and
half yearly ... from the money and stock in hand he receives at my
death . Furthermore she my said dear and loving wife MARY CLARKSON
is herself to receive £5 annually from the Corporation of Richmond
that sum being the annual interest for the sum of £100 of mine in
their hands. Furthermore she may said dear loving wife MARY CLARKSON
is herself to receive the £5 annually or half yearly from the person
or persons into whose hands the £100 will be deposited ...
Item in case the interest of the £200
mentioned above should be lower ... my said dear loving wife MARY
CLARKSON must submit to take that interest ... and in case my dear
loving wife MARY CLARKSON should marry again it is my will that she
forfeit every claim and right to the interest of the above £200 and
likewise every claim ... in my said house at the bottom of
Frenchgate and likewise to the furniture in the said house she my
said dear loving wife MARY CLARKSON shall have only power to demand
of my fifth son JOHN CLARKSON butcher my executor £10 a year for her
life chargeable upon my field joining the lane leading down to the
Clink Pool ....
Item I give at my dear wife MARY CLARKSON's
death to my eldest son the Reverend ANTHONY CLARKSON of Derby and to
my youngest son Mr CHRISTOPHER CLARKSON now a Lieutenant in Lord
Fauconberg's Regiment of North Riding Volunteers £200 to be divided
equally betwixt them ... [instructions re the £200 and when it was
to be paid] ...
Item and furthermore it is my last will and
testament that my fifth son JOHN CLARKSON butcher my executor do pay
one year after my dear loving wife MARY CLARKSON's death £50 to my
eldest son Reverend ANTHONY CLARKSON of Derby and likewise £50 to my
youngest son Mr CHRISTOPHER CLARKSON now a Lieutenant in Lord
Fauconberg's Regiment of North Riding Volunteers chargeable on my
field ... or upon my house ... and it is my last will and testament
that what moneys are sent over in future from America and which fall
to my share jointly with my two sisters namely Mrs JANE CLARKSON of
Richmond in the County of York and Mrs ? CAMES ? of London the said
sum of money shall be equally divided among my three sons all whom
are mentioned above ... I have written the above seriously and
deliberately and have herein disposed of my small estate money and
effect honestly and according to the dictates of my conscience
abilitys and without partiality sensible and well knowing that I am
to give an account of this writing and deed hereafter at an Awful
Tribunal hoping that my wife and sons will please gratefully to
accept what I have done for them as a small memorial of my. This is

my own seal 13 September 1782
