The Will of John Brown
In the Name of God Amen I John Brown of Hall
within the parish of Chard in the County of Somerset Clothier being of a
Sound Mind Memory and understanding Do make Ordain Publish and Declare
this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following / that is
to say / First I Give and bequeath unto my Loving Wife Betty Brown the
sum of Ten Pounds to be paid her by my Executors hereinafter named
within the space of Three Months next after my decease, And also all the
Household Goods and Furniture which was her’s before her intermarriage
with me Also I give unto my Daughter Martha Brown the sum of Three
Hundred and fifty Pounds to be paid her with lawfull Interest for the
same from the day of my death at the rate of five pounds Per Centum Per
Annum by my said Executors within six months next after my decease And
Whereas in and by one Indenture Tripartite bearing date the Twenty Ninth
day of June in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty
five and made between me the said John Brown of the first part, the said
Betty my now Wife / then called Betty Sharland / of the Second part and
Thomas Knight then of Nailbourne in the Parish of Herrington / since
deceased / John Coles then of Bishops Lydeard / since deceased / and
John Haddon of Staplegrove in the said County Gentleman of the Third
part, being or purporting to be a Settlement made previous to my
marriage with the said Betty It was thereby Declared and Agreed that the
said Thomas Knight John Coles and John Haddon or the survivors of them
his Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns Should stand Seized
Professed or (?)ed of a Moiety of the sum of Six Hundred Pounds therein
mentioned and thereby vested in them or of the Lands and Premisses to be
therewith purchased In Trust (after the death of the survivors of me the
said John Brown or the said Betty my wife in case of failure of issue of
our Marriage) & for the only Use and Benefit of the Heirs Exors
Administrators and Assigns of me the said John Brown Now I do hereby
Give Devise and Bequeath the Sum of Two Hundred Pounds as part of the
sum of Three Hundred Pounds / being the moiety of the said sum of Six
Hundred Pounds / or a proportionable part equivalent to that Sum of the
Lands and Premises to be purchased ( in case any such purchase shall be
made) unto my said daughter Martha Brown her Heirs Executors
Administrators and Assigns And I do also Give and Bequeath the sum of
One Hundred Pounds other part of the said sum of Three Hundred Pounds or
a proportionable part equivalent to that Sum of the Lands and Premises
to be purchased ( in case any such purchase shall be made) unto my Son
Samuel Brown his Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns And I do
hereby declare direct and appoint that the said John Haddon (the now
surviving trustee) his Heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns shall
after the death of the survivors of me the said John Brown and Betty my
