The Will of Sir John Bromfield

 

In the name of God, Amen. I, Sir JOHN BROMFIELD of Suffolk place in the parrish of Saint George Martyr in Southwark in the County of Surrey Being att being att the present of good health and perfect memory (blessed be god for it) ~ do hereby declare to all the world this to be my last will and testament as followeth First for my soule and body I do surrender them into the hands and disposall of god Almighty master and preserver of both when god shall so please to take me out of this sinfull world into his heavenly kingdom which Jesus Christ my redeemer purchased for me and I confidently believe and am well assured I shalbe partaker of after this life is ended And as to the disposall or interment of my body to be buryed within three days after my decease I leave that to my executor with the approbation of my dear wife where they please so and it be done in the stillest tyme of the night by torchlight with the least ostentation or charge that may be And by the fewest of my friends only of nearest relation to accompany my corps to its place of rest And concerning the disposall of what possessions or estate in lands which god hath blessed me withall And of which I am seized And at present am and have a plenarie* power to dispose of I do hereby declare my mynd will and meaning for the settlement thereof as hereafter followeth, That is to say by this my last will and testament in this my own hand writing I do hereby devise will and bequeath unto my loveing and the oldest of my sonnes EDWARD BROMFIELD Esquire And to the ~ heirs males of his body All those my lands Tenements and hereditaments whatsoever, called or knowne by the name of Suffolk Place lying and being in the parrish of Saint Georges and County of Surrey with all the rights members and appurtenances whatsoever to the same belonging. Item I do further hereby devise give will and bequeath unto my Sonne EDW: BROMFIELD all those my Mannors Lordships Royalties Lands and hereditaments whatsoever lying and being in the Counties of Hampshire and Wilts That is to say the Lordships and Royalties of the Pryory and Mannor of Carisbrooke Godshill Freshwater and ~ Wellow in the Isle of Wight and Counties aforesaid, withall their rights members and appurtinances to any of them belonging to my said sonne EDW: BROMFIELD And the heirs males of his body ~ excepting only out of those Lands and hereditaments in the said ~ Isle of Wight as by deed before marriage were heretofore settled on my deare and much honored wife Dame ANNE BROMFIELD and our sonne JOHN and his heirs as by settlement before marriage in the said deed is approved(?). Item I do likewise by this my said will and testament hereby devise give will and bequeath unto my said sonne EDWARD BROMFIELD and the heirs males of his body All that my halfe parte or moyetie** of the Mannor of Hayton & Koymer(?) with all its rights, members and appurtenances lying and being in the County of Sussex And alsoe all that my lands tene-ments and hereditaments whatsoever lying and being in the County of Sussex And alsoe all that my lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever lying and being in the County of Staffordshire called or knowne by the name of the Mannor of Blakenhall als Black- nall to him and the heirs males of his body, And for want of such issue then to the right heirs of me the said Sir JOHN BROMFIELD All which said lands and hereditaments herein above mentioned I doe give and bequeath unto my said Sonne EDWARD BROMFIELD as above said (with this provision And upon this condition notwithstanding my will and meaning is that my sonne EDWARD BROMFIELD (within one year after my decease) do pay unto ELIZABETH BROMFIELD and MARGARET BROMFIELD my daughters and unto GEORGE BROMFIELD my third sonne, the summe of three(?) Thousand pounds That is to say to each of my said daughters one Thousand Pounds a piece for each of them ?????? And untill payment through the full (consideration?) thereof in the (mean while?) for the same for their present mayntenance And in case any of my aforesaid daughters should happen to dye before the other and before the said legacies given & paid then the survivor of them to have the five hundred pounds ?? going to her that is ?? dead And the other five hundred ~ pounds to come unto my said sonne EDWARD BROMFIELD or his assignes for ever And whereas I doe hereby will and enjoyne my sonne EDWARD BROMFIELD to pay unto my sonne GEORGE BROMFIELD the somme of one Thousand pounds yet my further will and meaning is That whereas I have made a settlement of certaine other lands in Staffordshire that is to say, of the Mannor of Barton and Barton Park in Staffordshire upon my sonne CHARLES BROMFIELD as by the said deed of settlement I doth approve yet Nevertheless in case my sonne CHARLES should happen to dye without issue ~ Male and my sonne GEORGE BROMFIELD should be the next heir to his brother CHARLES as by that settlement it doth appeare then my will & meaning is that That my sonne GEORGE BROMFIELD by the enjoyment of Barton and Barton Parke do then disclayme the Legacie of one Thousand pounds if soe: and unto him doe there up(?) repay unto his brother EDWARD BROMFIELD and his assignes The somme of one Thousand Pounds. Item I do hereby give will and bequeath unto my dear wife Dame ANNE BROMFIELD my Coach, horses and paire of ~ harness As also All the bed bedding furniture and other the ornaments whatsoever belonging and being in my own bedchamber att Suffolk Place att the tyme of my death for her use only so long as she shall remayne my widow and continue there her abode and dwelling there with my sonne EDWARD BROMFIELD as is my desire and may be for her comodmentie(?) and to the content of them both not doubting of my said sonne his readiness and willing?? To afford her that accomodation and respect that is due to her as my widdow untill shee shall marry agayne And then I doe give the aforesaid goods as alsoe all other my personall estate whatsoever in money Plate goods and chattells I do hereby give will and bequeath unto my executor hereafter named for the better and more perfect p'formance of this my will and for payment of all debts and Legacies whatsoever due from me which I hope my sonne will satisfie as I desire Lastly I doe hereby nominate and appoynt my said Sonne EDWARD BROMFIELD esquire to be the only Executor of this my last will and testament in confidence he will fully and faithfully so perform the same In witnesse whereof I doe hereunto sett my hand this Fyfteenth day of November in the seventeenth year of his Majesties Reigne King Charles the second Anno Domini 1665.
