The Will of Alice Brain

 

In the Name of God Amen I Alice Brain of Chipping Norton in the County of Oxford Spinster being sick and weak in Body but of sound Mind Memory and Understanding praised be God for the same and calling to Mind the Certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say ffirst and principally I recommend my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God my Creator hoping and steadfastly believing through the Merits and Intercession of my Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ for a happy Resurrection to Life Eternal and my Body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried with Christian Burial at the Discretion of my Executor herein after named and my Worldly Estates and Effects I dispose of in manner following ffirst I give and bequeath unto my Brother Thomas Brain the sum of five hundred pounds of lawful Money of Great Britain Also I give and bequeath unto my Sister Mary Brain the sum of five hundred pounds of like lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid her by my Executor hereinafter named within one Month next after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my Kinswoman Jane Brain daughter of my Brother Thomas Brain the sum of two hundred pounds of lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid her by my Executor when She shall have arrived to her respective age of twenty one Years and my Will is that my Mother Jane Brain shall receive and take to her own Use the Interest of the said two hundred pounds during her Life and immediately after her decease then I give the Interest of the said two hundred pounds unto my said Brother Thomas Brain until my said Kinswoman shall arrive to her respective age of twenty one Years Also I give and bequeath unto Ann Hunt my Mothers Servant Maid the sum of five pounds I give and bequeath unto the poor of Long Compton the Sum of twelve pounds to be distributed amongst them in such Manner as my Executor shall direct and think fit All the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Goods Chattels Moneys and Effects after payment of my just Debts Legacys and ffuneral Expences I give and bequeath unto my said Mother Jane Brain and the Same to dispose of as she shall think proper and I do hereby appoint my Brother Thomas Brain sole Executor of this my Will hereby revoking all other Wills by me at any time heretofore made In Witness whereof I the said Alice Brain the Testatrix have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the sixth day of May in the Year of our Lord 1765 Allice Brain
