In the Name of God Amen I
THOMAS BOWMAN of Little Russell Street in the parish of St George
Bloomsbury in the County of Middlesex Schoolmaster being of sound
and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will
and testament that is to say first I recommend my Soul to God and my
Body to be decently buried at as small expence as can be according
to the discretion of my Executors hereinafter named and as for such
worldly effects wherewith I give and bequeath them in manner and
form following that is to say I give and bequeath after my debts and
Funeral expences are paid to my beloved daughters C B and M B all my
real and personal estates of I shall die possessed whether in lands
or in monies in the Public Funds or on mortgage securities or in
bills bonds obligatory or notes or book debts due to me at time of
my decease to be divided between them equally when they arrive
respectively at the age of 21 years share and share alike But my
Will is that the legacies hereafter mentioned shall in no wise be
subject to the same bequest but shall be considered no wit
appertaining thereto but that each Legatee shall enjoy their
respective legacies as my late dear wife desired that my daughter
MARGARET might have the Gold repeating watch with the cases
thereunto belonging with a monthly musical clock now in the Dining
room compliant to my wife to her last request I will and bequeath
the said clock and watch with the appurtenances thereunto belonging
and as an equivalent to the above bequest I bequeath to my daughter
C B another Gold repeating watch with the cases thereunto belonging
also my silver ?castors? intire and a clock if any other than that
mentioned is found in the house at the time of my demise also I
bequeath to my daughter M B my large silver soup spoon with five
others marked my best silver pint mug the book case and drawers in
the dining room the Scrutoir with the cabinet thereone in my Bed
Chamber my Mahogany bedstead bed materials bolster and pillows with
all the furniture thereunto belonging whether cotton ot woollen and
in lieu of the this last bequest I bequeath to my daughter C BOWMAN
my desk and book case in the two pair of stairs forward? and 2 pair
of Chest and drawers the one now standing in the two pair of stairs
Back Room the other in the third room on the first floor and also a
small chest and drawers in the fore garrett Item I give to my
daughter C my cloathes chest and her late Mothers Chest and to my
daughter M I bequeath a large Oaken Chest in the back closet
containing Bed Linen in the two pair of stairs also I bequeath to my
daughter M all the household furniture oil cloth carpet etc
belonging to the dining room the pillar ? ....? and to my daughter
CATHERINE I bequeath all the rest of the furniture tables etc after
such division of the legacies are made as I before expressly
mentioned and bequeathed But my Will is that in these two last
bequests the pewter brasses earthen ware nor china shall be included
but that a fair and equitable division shall be made between my
daughters CATHERINE and MARGT BOWMAN by two proper persons appointed
jointly by my executors who shall judge of their worth of each share
without partiality to either legatee Also my will is that the tea
spoons be divided amongst them excepting a pierced pair of silver
tea tongs and for [sic] best spoons which my dear wife desired might
be given to my daughter M But in that case my will is that some more
tea spoons may in the division be given to my daughter C to make her
share equivalent with the other and also my will is that what
wearing apparell whether silk linen or stuff and also what laces
aprons caps ruffles etc of whatsoever kind belonging to my late wife
and also whatsoever table linen bed linen of what kind and
whatsoever as shall be found at my decease be equaitably divided
beween my aforesaid children and which division I request my Friends
Mrs SARAH GRAVE and PRISCILLA PATTISON to make and to each of them I
bequeath One Guinea for a mourning ring for their trouble and
further I desire that I may be buried close to my late dear wife
that my executors may have the discretion of my Funeral to invite
who they please and to pay for the same out of my effects as soon as
they conveniently can and that an Inscription be put upon the stone
the same as my wifes and that WILLIAM BURROWS of King Street
Bloomsbury be the undertaker upon this occasion Also that my wearing
apparel be disposed of as soon as it decently can Also I give to my
daughter M her late mothers wedding and garnet ring another ring
with a miniature picture set in it the mourning rinf her mother had
for her uncle and to my Dr [daughter] C I give all the rest of the
rings and further my will is that if either of my Daughters shall
directly or indirectly go to Law with the other such in Common Law
or ?....? these bequests and legacies shall be directly excluded all
benefits arising from this my last will and testament and further if
either of my said children should happen to die before then my will
is that all and singular my goods lands tenements and effects shall
devolve to the survivor of them without Lett or hindrance from any
person whatsoever Also my will is that all my Books whthere
Religious and Historical Poetical or relating of Law or otherwise
may be equally be divided that between my two daughters that is to
say those in both Book Cases

Appeared Personally CATHERINE
GRACE BOWMAN of the Parish of Saint George Bloomsbury in the County
of Middlesex spinster aged upwards of sixteen years and made oath
that THOMAS BOWMAN late of the same parish widower deceased departed
this life leaving behind him her the appearer and MARGARET ANN
BOWMAN spinster his natural and lawful daughters only chldren and
the only persons entitled to the administration and distribution of
the personal estate of the said deceased in case he had died
intestate and Residuary Legatees named in the last will and
testament of the said deceased hereunto annexed and that on the 30th
day of July last being the day of the death of the said deceased she
found the said will locked up in a drawer wherein the deceased kept
other papers of moment and concern the same being without date
beginning this “In the Name of God Amen I Thomas Bowman of Little
Russell Street in the Parish of Saint George Bloomsbury in the
County of Middlesex schoolmaster” ending thus “ that is to say those
in both book cases” and that at the time of finding the same she
looked over the whole of the other papers and writings in the said
drawer and that there was no writing or papers therein that was a
part or continuation of the said will or that purported to be of the
form of a will or testamentary disposition save the said paper
hereunto annexed and she further saith that she hath looked over the
whole of the deceased papers and writing two several times since
finding the said will with design of finding any additional or
remaining part thereof or other will or testamentary disposition if
any such should be amongst his said papers and writings but found no
paper or writing of the face or form of a will or testamentary
disposition save as aforesaid and this Deponent doth therefore
believe the said deceased departed this life leaving no other will
or testamentary disposition than the said paper writing hereunto
annexed ....... Catherine Grace Bowman was duly sworn to the truth
of this affidavit before me .... Nov 6th 1773

Hodgson of Lyons Inn in the County of Middlesex gentleman and John
Scott of the Parish of Saint George the Martyr in the County of
Middlesex clockmaker and severally made oath and deposed that they
know and were well acquainted with Thomas Bowman late of the parish
of Saint George Bloomsbury in the County of Middlesex deceased for
several years before and to the time of his death and during such
time have often seen him write and subscribe his name ... and having
viewed and carefully perused the paper writing hereunto annexed ....
believe the whole contents of the said will ... to be in the hand
writing of the said Thomas Bowman deceased.....
This Will or testamentary
schedule was proved at London on 11 November 1773 before the
worshipful Francis Simpson Dr of Laws .... by Sarah Grace wife of
John Grace and Priscilla Pattison wife of Joseph Pattison the
executors according to the tenor of the said will ......
