Text:
Will:
In
the name of God, Amen.
I William Bordley of
Walker Ground in the
parish of Hawkeshead,
clerk, being in health
and of a mind and memory
fit to dispose of my
effects, do make this my
last will in manner
following
Impt. I commit my soul
to the mercy of God who
gave it trusting only in
the merits of Christ my
saviour, and my body to
be buried at the
discretion of my
executrix hereby
afternamed
Item I give to my son
William my empty desk
and brazen mortar, both
marked with the initial
letters of his name, and
my bible in quarto, and
the bond wherein he
stands bound to me for
£200, together with the
principal and all
interest due thereon
upon this confidence,
that he will secure the
principal to his
children at or before
his death
And whereas my daughter
Elizabeth has received
her portion, I now give
her ten pounds more and
desire her children may
receive further kindness
by the will of my
executrix
Item, I give and
bequeath to my daughter
Agnes five hundred
pounds to be paid her as
her portion twelve
months after she marries
with her mother’s
consent, or within one
month after her mother’s
decease, but if she
marries against the mind
and without the consent
of her mother being then
alive and fit to give
her consent, I order in
that case only one
hundred pounds for her
portion, but if said
Agnes die before she
marries, then I appoint
the interest of the £500
designed for her portion
shall go yearly towards
the maintenance of my
cousins at Newcastle
Mary Bordley and
Elizabeth Bordley to be
paid to their order
yearly at Kendal during
their joint lives and
one half thereof during
the longer liver of them
at four percent if no
more can be got upon
good security, and the
first payment to be made
a year after my decease
And after their deaths I
appoint £400 thereof to
be divided equally among
all my grandchildren
then alive and the
remaining £100 I order
to be equally divided
between my cousins
Stephen Bordley and
William Bordley, now
both of London [two
illegible lines at the
foot of a page]
Item, I give and
bequeath the corn tithe
of the glebe land at
Walker Ground aforesaid
which I lately
purchased, and the three
pounds six shillings and
eight pence for which I
hold a close called
Longmeadow Parrock in
Mortgage, to be settled
upon my successor and
his successor ministers
of Hawkeshead forever,
provided he and they
behave themselves fairly
and civilly to my
executrix in all things
and particularly in
respect of her household
goods and husbandry
gear, to the judgment of
two impartial men to be
chosen by herself,
otherwise if said tithes
and close with all my
right therein shall go
to my executrix
And I do hereby appoint
my dear wife Ann sole
executrix of this my
last will, and to her I
give all my goods and
chattels, real and
personal not before
disposed of by this will
I
do also give her my
tenement at Thorns in
Underbarrow during the
term of her natural life
according to the custom
of the manor, and after
her decease I give my
said tenement to my
grandson William Bordley
and his heirs forever,
desiring my executrix to
divide at her death what
she has spared out of my
personal estate among
our grandchildren
And I do hereby revoke
all other wills and do
make and appoint the
writing on both sides of
this paper to be my last
will and testament,
