Notes:

1.   Testatrix was Ann, nee Futhergill, widow of William Bordley (d 1741) of Hawkshead, Lancashire

2.   Catherine Bordley was the widow of testatrix’s deceased son William Bordley (1697-1735)

3.   Richard Ford was the husband of testatrix’s elder daughter Elizabeth (b 1699)

4.   Agnes Bordley (b 1706) was testatrix’s younger daughter

5.   John Harrison succeeded testatrix’s husband as curate of HawksheadJohn Harrison succeeded testatrix’s husband as curate of Hawkshead

Will:

In the name of God, Amen.  I Ann Bordley of Hawkshead in the County of Lancaster, widow, being of sound mind, memory and understanding, do make and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner following:  first, I commend my soul to almighty God that gave it, trusting only in the merits and passion of my saviour Christ; my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executrix hereinafter named

And as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bestow on me, I dispose thereof as follows

I give and bequeath to my cousins Mary Bordley and Elizabeth Bordley, both of Newcastle and to Margaret Dickinson of Lancaster each a guinea

I also give to my daughter-in-law Catherine Bordley, ten pounds

Also I give to my son-in-law Richard Ford, ten pounds

Also I give to my daughter Elizabeth Ford, ten pounds

Also I give to my daughter Agnes Bordley the sum of two hundred pounds and I also give her one year’s interest in the rest and residue of all the money I shall die possessed of; I also give to my said daughter Agnes all my household goods, linen and plate, she paying my debts, legacys and funeral expenses

And all the rest, residue and remainder of my real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever I give devise and bequeath unto the child or children of my son William Bordley and to the child or children of my daughter Elizabeth Ford that shall be living a year next after the time of my decease then to be equally divided between and amongst them share and share alike

And I do hereby appoint and constitute my said daughter Agnes Bordley sole executrix of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former and other will or wills by me at any time heretofore made, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of June one thousand seven hundred and forty five

In the presence of us who in her presence and of one another have subscribed our names as witnesses thereto  Myles ?Townson,  James Dawson

 

 

Letters of administration:

Know all men by these presents that we, Agnes Bordley of Hawkeshead in the county of Lancaster, spinster, and Richard Ford of Grizedale in the said county, gentleman, are holden and firmly bound unto the Right Reverend Father in God, Samuel, by divine permission Lord Bishop of Chester, in three thousand six hundred and seventy eight pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain, to be paid the Right Reverend Father or to his certain attorney, his executors, administrators, or assigns; to which payment, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, and each of us, our heirs, executors, and administrators firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals, dated the eleventh day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty eight

The condition of this obligation is such, that if the above bounden Agnes Bordley, sole executrix of the last will and testament of Ann Bordley, late of Hawkeshead in the county of Lancaster and archdeaconry of Richmond, widow, deceased, shall and do well and truly execute and perform the last will and testament of the above named Ann Bordley, widow, deceased, and do pay all her debts and legacys, so far as her goods and personal estate will extend, and the law shall bind her if also she do exhibit into court a true and perfect inventory of the said deceased’s goods and personal estate, and give a true and just account of her acting in the premises, when she shall be thereunto lawfully called; that then this obligation to be void, or else in force.
